It seems to be a generic term for older lady of the family. My best friend, who is northern, seems to have a gaggle of people called auntie who are not remotely related but are her mum's friends. I think this is ridiculous and tend to ask if they're a real aunt, but it seems to be a thing. So I expect this is similar.
