Bad Influence on Netflix

We watched Growing Up Gypsy on the IPlayer last night after hearing about it on Woman’s Hour.

Can also recommend the Instagram Effect on the IPlayer and My Wife my Abuser although I can’t remember which service that was on.

Forensics, the Real CSI is also excellent.

Dopesick on iPlayer. About the painkiller oxycodone and how the drug company manipulated people into thinking it wasn't addictive. Quite incredible

Not gripping, but warm and funny is Alien on Stage, about a group of Dorset bus drivers who, in a change from doing their usual social club panto, decide to do a stage version of Alien. Which they then transfer to the West End. Grin

Thank you, off to find that one...

Watch LA 92 & then watch OJ Made in America to understand what was going on at that time and how it was even possible he got equated. The OJ documentary is probably one the best thing I have seen, so many layers.

The Aviici documentary is really moving. It really stayed with me and I’ve thought about it often.

Yes, it was good, and I agree it stays with you.

Into the fire my lost daughter had me shooketh! On Netflix so good

Potterurotter · 20/04/2025 15:45

Also, the jinx

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 20/04/2025 17:38

Con mum was fascinating.
Fyre festival interesting too. Both Netflix

browsyork · 20/04/2025 18:39

Fyre festival is pure schadenfreude and I love it

Jimmy Saville: A British Horror Story. I'm 40 mins into the first part and it really is shocking! He barely hide what he did, yet people laughed.

If you like gentle, funny and quirky, A Bunch of Amateurs, on iPlayer. I started a thread about this when I first saw it, as it was the best thing I'd seen for ages - absolutely brilliant. I don't think my thread inspired anyone to watch it ... but go on, watch it! You won't be disappointed! It's about a group of amateur film-makers.

Thank you so much for recommending this, I watched it this afternoon and absolutely fell in love with it!

Time40 · 30/04/2025 20:01

@CheesecakeOnTheLanai Yay! I'm so pleased! That director is brilliant. She did another great one about a woman who bought an historic hotel in York, and her struggle to make a go of it. I would love to see that again, and I keep checking to see if it's popped up anywhere, but so far I can't find it.

Oh what a shame it doesn't seem to be available, if I find it at some point I'll pop back on here and let you know. That sounds right up my street, I love those quirky and unusual docs - sometimes I just need something light and different from my usual true crime stuff!

Timeforatincture · 30/04/2025 21:03

The four part documentary a month or so ago about the 7/7 bombings and their aftermath. Really moving pieces from victims and first responders, as well as a balanced section about Jean Charles de Menezes.

springshadows · 30/04/2025 21:04

A documentary on ITVX about the murders of a millionaire couple in Essex - a 2 parter and a good watch

BlondeFool · 30/04/2025 21:05

@CheesecakeOnTheLanaiSounds just my cup of tea. Watching Race across the world then will put on

springshadows · 30/04/2025 21:05

Also just started Fake on ITVX which isn’t a documentary but based on a true story about a woman who falls in love with a supposed rich man she met online dating.

Timeforatincture · 30/04/2025 21:06

Also, from one extreme to another, The Secret Genius of Modern Life by Prof Hannah Fry. Looking at all there is to know about everything from air fryers to rollercoasters.

BreathingIn · 30/04/2025 21:07

If it's still there "Afflicted" on Netflix.
Absolutely wild.

ScrambledSmegs · 30/04/2025 21:14

Does it have to be true crime? I've just watched Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Doctor Moreau and was absolutely gripped at how batshit it all went. It's got everything - Marlon Brando being typically weird, director getting fired and replaced after a week of shooting (this is not a spoiler) hurricanes, everyone going a bit feral in the Australian jungle...

It's on Prime Video, totally worth watching.

onitlikeacarbonnet · 30/04/2025 21:21

There’s a really lovely film about American spelling bees that came out in the early noughties called Spellbound (I think). Haven’t seen it in anywhere lately but worth a search.
Also, one, I can’t remember the name of but someone else might, about a French primary school teacher. It has subtitles but it is one of the most poignant films I’ve ever watched.
On a different note Metallica: some kind of monster is amazing, weird, and funny.

True crime recs which have been mentioned but are worth repeating; making a murderer and don’t fuck with cats.

I watched that last night and I'm still thinking about the woman. Absolutely incredible and shocking, such a sad story. Highly recommended.

For something completely different - John Was Trying to Contact Aliens is a really sweet short film thats worth seeing if its still available.

coolmum123 · 30/04/2025 21:28

Haven’t read full thread but The Murdaugh Murders a Southern scandal is insane. I saw it on Now tv so might be a sky crime doc. Honestly it’s unbelievable

buzzy1 · 30/04/2025 21:31

The Zelenskyy documentary on IPlayer is fascinating. Also recommend the Milli Vanilli documentary on Disney Plus
