6 part drama. On sun and mon x3w at 9pm itv

ITV has released the first trailer for its new six-part drama, Protection (www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/protection-itv-first-look-exclusive-newsupdate/)
, starring Siobhan Finneran, Nadine Marshall and Katherine Kelly.

The upcoming thriller series has been described as "what happens when the clandestine and morally grey witness protection system breaks down".

The gripping trailer sees a man with a gun enter a home to kill members of a family before the police and ambulance arrive as its revealed they've been in witness protection.

I'm neck deep in it," Finneran's character can be heard saying before she is told by Ace Bhatti's character: "Then keep your head down and your mouth shut."

The trailer ends with the chilling words: "Don't trust anyone..."

The synopsis reads: "Detective Inspector Liz Nyles (Finneran) – a single mum, juggling a difficult divorce and a sick father – finds herself at the heart of a security breach within her witness protection unit.

"Professionally compromised by a secret affair with a colleague, she is determined to uncover the true source of corruption within the police.

"Liz will stop at nothing to redeem herself, the reputation of her lover, and to keep her witnesses and her own family safe. Even if it means breaking all the rules."

Telling the story of "a tough but increasingly isolated and under suspicion police officer as she is pulled into a dangerous conspiracy where nothing is as it seems", the six-parter is inspired by a real-life witness protection officer who served as a consultant on the series.

It’s about a police officer, Detective Inspector Liz Nyles (Siobhan Finneran), who finds herself at the heart of such a breach; personally compromised by an affair with a colleague, but determined to fight back, and uncover the true source of corruption within her unit.

To redeem herself, the reputation of her lover, and to keep her witnesses safe. Even if they don’t always deserve it.

"Navigating the morally-grey, clandestine world of witness protection, Liz’s mission to find the truth will take her deep into the heart of the criminal underbelly and beyond as she becomes more and more torn between caring for her family, her loyalty to her lover and her duty as a police officer." We're already hooked!

Police officer DI Liz Nyles works in the secretive and high-stakes world of Witness Protection.

When we meet her, she’s juggling a challenging front-line job (with life and death consequences for her witnesses) alongside a demanding family life – attending to the needs of a teenage daughter, a difficult ex, and a dad recovering from a stroke.

"Liz is principled, in control, and scrupulous about the security of her witnesses, particularly the high-risk criminal turned informant Jimmy McLennan and his family.

Jimmy is about to testify against his old boss Eddie Crowther, the head of a major organised crime group which has so far evaded prosecution.

As with all those under her protection, Liz goes above and beyond to keep Jimmy’s family safe, working with colleague DS Raj Kohli to keep their whereabouts strictly hidden.

It's certainly like LoD in that our heroine is it up to her neck! 😀

Be good if you could understand what they are saying. Usual muffled sound and nor very loud.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/03/2025 05:22

veryy strange she rang john gibson, and trusted him because he was posh. i guess she sussed out the messages seemed innocent.
i thought raj didnt want the phone unlocked because his number would be in there buit he is protesting his innocence.
it is really bad she would leave the girl with her dad!

AreYouShittingMe · 18/03/2025 06:18

I’m enjoying it so far. Just a couple of things. Initially everyone thought Amy was at school, which is how she survived the hit. Is she now a target for Crowther because of what she might have seen, or would she always have been in danger? If so, what was the initial plan around killing her? The impression at the end was that her death had been instigated by Crowther.
Also, could Amy have been sneaking out to Arlo at the start, not her grandmother as stated? And is Arlo helping Amy, or his dad? He didn’t seem too pleased to see his dad at the end, but that might be just to get us to question the relationship.
I’m really enjoying being able to watch two episodes in a row each week. It helps my memory! But also enjoying all the theories which I would miss if I binged.

the80sweregreat · 18/03/2025 06:41

Amy was off sick the day of the shooting. Poor girl must be so traumatized bless her. Does she realize that Arlo is Crowther’s son ?
The scenes in the shopping centre were quite well done. Hold your breath time.

Ellmau · 18/03/2025 07:33

And is Arlo helping Amy, or his dad?

I think his true loyalty could be crucial in the end.

Clawdy · 18/03/2025 08:28

Don't understand why Amy would be hiding something from the police when she's lost her parents. And how does Crowther know she hasn't told them everything?

Don't understand why Amy would be hiding something from the police when she's lost her parents. And how does Crowther know she hasn't told them everything?

Because she's 13 and wants to talk to her friend. You would think her sm accounts would be watched as I'd imagine this is a common thing with witness protection kids.

Yes he might hate his dad and be protecting her or he might be giving him the info, all though she did say 'can't say' when he asked where she was but don't some apps like Snapchat have 'last seen' on them?

Bunionbabe · 18/03/2025 09:05

Our PO told Amy thar she couldn't use phones etc while she is in protection, then she leaves her in daughter's room without checking there were no phones or computers around. Also, when gunmen looked upstairs after the shooting because they heard a sound. Any was hiding in big laundry chest so a quick search would have found her. They knew there was a child in the family. Numpty baddies. Numpties all round.

I use subtitles too. They’re great for not missing detail you might or would have missed otherwise

the80sweregreat · 18/03/2025 09:48

Late to watching ‘ line of duty ‘ but I started this last week ( first series ) and this seems similar at times.
The men look the same I agree with this ( so makes it difficult ) and I always use subtitles.

Gloriia · 18/03/2025 09:59

I did think her mum was being a bit harsh when her dd had spotted the men and was shouting 'mum mum there's someone in the garden' and the dm is like 'stop shouting and come here please'. You'd think in a protection house they'd be on high alert for anyone shouting things! Also as the trial was the next day I'd have thought they'd have had police in the house as protection.

Voldemortifying · 18/03/2025 10:06

I honestly think that anyone making a drama like this should run it past Mumsnetters first. We could iron out all the gaping loopholes in the plot for them.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/03/2025 10:12

They aren't watching Amy's social media accounts at the moment because they think she isn't using any. She's been told no phones (for obvious reasons) but she's using the stolen tablet. I have to say it's very odd indeed that this 12 year old who has in the past couple of days witnessed her parents shot dead, is largely left on her own in bedrooms in various unsecure houses! Still, creative licence.

I had the same thought as a pp - maybe in the opening sequence Amy was trying to get out to see Arlo and not her Grandma as she claimed.

Which of the male actors "looks the same"? I don't get this at all, they all look pretty distinguishable to me?

Yes we should put ourselves forward as consultants.

Seriously though, I can understand post trial they can't have armed protection for ever but in the lead up to it wouldn't they at least have a PC sat round the corner keeping an eye? Wouldn't have stopped them but to march in in broad daylight seemed very brazen imo.

Delatron · 18/03/2025 11:10

Cant remember his name - but the copper that got shot too - the Dad said ‘mate’ to him when he answered the door. So not potentially a police inside job - maybe the Dad told him where they were and wanted extra protection? . I’m guessing bad guy on trial, army friend, the Dad and police guy all know each other maybe?

Delatron · 18/03/2025 11:12

They should definitely have had armed protection and security watching the house at all times in the lead up to the trial. All too relaxed. Would the girl have even been going to school? Easy target there too.
