6 part drama. On sun and mon x3w at 9pm itv

ITV has released the first trailer for its new six-part drama, Protection (www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/protection-itv-first-look-exclusive-newsupdate/)
, starring Siobhan Finneran, Nadine Marshall and Katherine Kelly.

The upcoming thriller series has been described as "what happens when the clandestine and morally grey witness protection system breaks down".

The gripping trailer sees a man with a gun enter a home to kill members of a family before the police and ambulance arrive as its revealed they've been in witness protection.

I'm neck deep in it," Finneran's character can be heard saying before she is told by Ace Bhatti's character: "Then keep your head down and your mouth shut."

The trailer ends with the chilling words: "Don't trust anyone..."

The synopsis reads: "Detective Inspector Liz Nyles (Finneran) – a single mum, juggling a difficult divorce and a sick father – finds herself at the heart of a security breach within her witness protection unit.

"Professionally compromised by a secret affair with a colleague, she is determined to uncover the true source of corruption within the police.

"Liz will stop at nothing to redeem herself, the reputation of her lover, and to keep her witnesses and her own family safe. Even if it means breaking all the rules."

Telling the story of "a tough but increasingly isolated and under suspicion police officer as she is pulled into a dangerous conspiracy where nothing is as it seems", the six-parter is inspired by a real-life witness protection officer who served as a consultant on the series.

It’s about a police officer, Detective Inspector Liz Nyles (Siobhan Finneran), who finds herself at the heart of such a breach; personally compromised by an affair with a colleague, but determined to fight back, and uncover the true source of corruption within her unit.

To redeem herself, the reputation of her lover, and to keep her witnesses safe. Even if they don’t always deserve it.

"Navigating the morally-grey, clandestine world of witness protection, Liz’s mission to find the truth will take her deep into the heart of the criminal underbelly and beyond as she becomes more and more torn between caring for her family, her loyalty to her lover and her duty as a police officer." We're already hooked!

Police officer DI Liz Nyles works in the secretive and high-stakes world of Witness Protection.

When we meet her, she’s juggling a challenging front-line job (with life and death consequences for her witnesses) alongside a demanding family life – attending to the needs of a teenage daughter, a difficult ex, and a dad recovering from a stroke.

"Liz is principled, in control, and scrupulous about the security of her witnesses, particularly the high-risk criminal turned informant Jimmy McLennan and his family.

Jimmy is about to testify against his old boss Eddie Crowther, the head of a major organised crime group which has so far evaded prosecution.

As with all those under her protection, Liz goes above and beyond to keep Jimmy’s family safe, working with colleague DS Raj Kohli to keep their whereabouts strictly hidden.

You can always tell a poorly constructed drama as one of the characters has to deliver a long exposition on what happened, when, to whom and why. You shouldn't have to wait for a character to explain the plot, if there was one. Tosh. Also totally distracted by Liz's increasingly blonde hair. Too long, too yellow, too young and like a bloody beacon for any of the psychos out there trying to follow her.

Voldemortifying · 31/03/2025 22:59

What a load of rubbish that was!

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/03/2025 23:08

Ditto @mum2jakie. Enjoyed 1-5

6 confused me

knew I was wasn’t going mad with the your finished

I can only assume will be a second series explaining more

so in the end all bowed down to the pressure of being knocked off

so tech Wheatley and Kelman both weren’t baddies /corrupt but following orders from above thinking them kosher

is that right ?

blondes is a little bewildered

tho Liz didn’t look too bad for being in a fight and having her head and nose smashed against the floor a few times

@Clawdy glad you said tbat as I didn’t understand the photo either of her sister

was it even mentioned she had a sister - where was she when caring for dementor dad

Dementor dad - it’s not Harry Potter you know. 😂
I thought dementia dad was going to be discovered to have been inadvertently leaking info to one of the baddies. I even thought his new carer might be a baddie. But no.

JenniferBooth · 31/03/2025 23:20

Crap ending

purpleme12 · 31/03/2025 23:49

@Blondeshavemorefun we saw the sister in one of the earlier episodes

duc748 · 31/03/2025 23:53

Were we supposed to assume that Wheatley was unaware of Jardine's activities?

Steeleywheely · 01/04/2025 06:18

I was a binger a few weeks ago and so glad you’re all finding the ending to be as rubbish as I did. It had such potential too.

You only missed a funeral scene where everyone was giving Liz dirty looks!

You only missed a funeral scene where everyone was giving Liz dirty looks!

thank you !

Freysimo · 01/04/2025 08:13

I hope there's not another series, six hours of my life I'll never get back. Siobhan Finneran did her best with script but it was no Line of Duty which I guess was intention? I just never bought into her relationship with the cop, it was embarrassing.

Freysimo · 01/04/2025 08:15

Ellmau · 31/03/2025 22:50

It was a Secret Clue Brandice had left for Liz that he had hidden the microchip behind the same photo on her dad's wall.

As you do.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 01/04/2025 09:29

It wasn’t great. I had binged but I don’t think I’d bother with another series.

butterpuffed · 01/04/2025 12:57

Eps 1 to 5 were ok but this last one went right over my head . All I understood was they had to give in to a higher power . What a load of bollocks !

Liz recovered quickly and without a mark from being beaten up and Raj recovered from "touch and go" after being shot . They had magical medics !

duc748 · 01/04/2025 13:54

When they all pitched up at the funeral at the end, I thought it was going to be Raj's! And then there he was, right as rain (relatively)!

Tenby1234 · 06/04/2025 22:29

Protection mini series ,you picke the wrong lead it should have been Katherine Kelly as lead is too old to be a femme fatale

Freysimo · 07/04/2025 08:11

I don't know about being too old, but much as I like Siobhan Finneran, think she was miscast. She just didn't look comfortable in the role.

PassingStranger · 12/04/2025 16:49

Too complicated, too long and two many characters.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 17/04/2025 06:29

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/03/2025 20:43

I loved her in happy valley

she was Great in The Other One as well as Alma's not normal, more comedy

mightyducks · 21/04/2025 17:54

Well glad I wasn’t the only one left completely bewildered by the ending! What a load a tosh that turned out to be , had a promising start and then was just rubbish, didn’t even understand what happened in the end

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/04/2025 20:41

But bet we watch a s2 😂

Nah I wouldn't be tempted by a second series. Wasn't even shit enough to be entertaining!

duc748 · 21/04/2025 23:11

Agreed. It was one of those "that's hours of my life I'll never get back" shows.
