6 part drama. On sun and mon x3w at 9pm itv

ITV has released the first trailer for its new six-part drama, Protection (www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/protection-itv-first-look-exclusive-newsupdate/)
, starring Siobhan Finneran, Nadine Marshall and Katherine Kelly.

The upcoming thriller series has been described as "what happens when the clandestine and morally grey witness protection system breaks down".

The gripping trailer sees a man with a gun enter a home to kill members of a family before the police and ambulance arrive as its revealed they've been in witness protection.

I'm neck deep in it," Finneran's character can be heard saying before she is told by Ace Bhatti's character: "Then keep your head down and your mouth shut."

The trailer ends with the chilling words: "Don't trust anyone..."

The synopsis reads: "Detective Inspector Liz Nyles (Finneran) – a single mum, juggling a difficult divorce and a sick father – finds herself at the heart of a security breach within her witness protection unit.

"Professionally compromised by a secret affair with a colleague, she is determined to uncover the true source of corruption within the police.

"Liz will stop at nothing to redeem herself, the reputation of her lover, and to keep her witnesses and her own family safe. Even if it means breaking all the rules."

Telling the story of "a tough but increasingly isolated and under suspicion police officer as she is pulled into a dangerous conspiracy where nothing is as it seems", the six-parter is inspired by a real-life witness protection officer who served as a consultant on the series.

It’s about a police officer, Detective Inspector Liz Nyles (Siobhan Finneran), who finds herself at the heart of such a breach; personally compromised by an affair with a colleague, but determined to fight back, and uncover the true source of corruption within her unit.

To redeem herself, the reputation of her lover, and to keep her witnesses safe. Even if they don’t always deserve it.

"Navigating the morally-grey, clandestine world of witness protection, Liz’s mission to find the truth will take her deep into the heart of the criminal underbelly and beyond as she becomes more and more torn between caring for her family, her loyalty to her lover and her duty as a police officer." We're already hooked!

Police officer DI Liz Nyles works in the secretive and high-stakes world of Witness Protection.

When we meet her, she’s juggling a challenging front-line job (with life and death consequences for her witnesses) alongside a demanding family life – attending to the needs of a teenage daughter, a difficult ex, and a dad recovering from a stroke.

"Liz is principled, in control, and scrupulous about the security of her witnesses, particularly the high-risk criminal turned informant Jimmy McLennan and his family.

Jimmy is about to testify against his old boss Eddie Crowther, the head of a major organised crime group which has so far evaded prosecution.

As with all those under her protection, Liz goes above and beyond to keep Jimmy’s family safe, working with colleague DS Raj Kohli to keep their whereabouts strictly hidden.

I’d definitely write in some curtains or some tarpaulin! I’d have less mumbled dialogue and characters that put the lights on when in dark places, men that can be recognized apart and a less complex plot. Not asking for too much then ! 😆

PassingStranger · 18/03/2025 12:29

It takes it out of it when it's hard to understand.
Lots of dramas are farfetched.
I guess their would not be a drama if things were done by the book and properly.

the80sweregreat · 18/03/2025 12:46

I agree they need ‘ poetic licence’ to move plots forwards, but you would think that the lady officer would have checked her daughter’s bedroom for any tech devices first thing especially after moving Amy into it.
With so much tracing available now, it’s a wonder anyone agrees to be in witness protection these days.
It must be so frightening watching your back constantly and so on and people are easier to track and find.

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/03/2025 12:48

And they seem to be so local as well. Wouldn’t witness be miles away

There is as a kind of comedy / drama on ITV with Robson Green about witness protection and the families had to move miles away. I know it was only fiction ,but I always thought that they did.

duc748 · 18/03/2025 14:09

I thought the idea that an armed hit-squad could just move in like that the day before the trial, was ridiculous. 'Witness protection' isn't worth a tinker's fart if that's the best they can do?

Did anyone else wonder of the song 'Protection' would be on the sound-track? Wuld fit the tone too.

This girl I know needs some shelter
She don't believe anyone can help her 🎵

Maybe Massive Attack asked too much for the rights!

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 18/03/2025 14:21

I think there must be someone higher up the food chain who is dodgy. Also Jonathan cake often plays a baddie so he may have a role somewhere.

Yeah you’d think they’d be in the Outer Hebrides or something- just until the trial.

I mean would the daughter still be going to the same school? It seems like a very poor example of witness protection..

Exactly

unless not worries about her safety

So why was Amy running out of her safe house at the beginning of ep 1 in the middle of the night.

She's not being looked after very well , being passed from pillar to post .

There's no way Liz would have been allowed to go and see Raj after he was locked up .

I agree with others , John Gibson is involved somehow .

The recaps are always good @Blondeshavemorefun . I'll have forgotten bits and pieces by next week !

It's funny I've been thinking how gorgeous her blonde swishy hair is, looks like she's just stepped out of a nice n easy ad Grin.

Yes age wise it doesn't quite fit with her df other than that I'm liking it, has a LOD grippingness about it.

I know she is meant to be younger than in rl, but even more doesn’t really fit that her younger boss has her in mind for when he retires. I know it ducks I shouldn’t be looking up the actors ages but as soon as he said that I looked them up!

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/03/2025 20:21

I think Siobhan F and Katherine K should have been reverse cast. KK always plays a hard old bag whereas SF is always the sympathetic character. It would be good to ring the changes please casting directors!

Yes I agree. SF's character had a bit too much of Our Clare's constantly worried face and do gooding from Happy Valley about her. Be nice to see her return to her nasty O'Brien for a change from Downton.

diddl · 18/03/2025 20:55

Just watched ep1 & was a bit disappointed.

Affair with colleague🙄

Nowhere to place Amy so take her home🙄

Have to look into things to cover up affair🙄

Wii keep on with it though!

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/03/2025 21:30

It’s good @diddl

Late to watching ‘ line of duty ‘ but I started this last week ( first series ) and this seems similar at times.
The men look the same I agree with this ( so makes it difficult ) and I always use subtitles.

Ah you are in for a treat! LoD is excellent. Wish I was watching it for the first time.

Bunionbabe · 18/03/2025 22:13

I can still remember SF as Janice sitting round the pool in Benidorm. I think Steve Pemberton played her DH.

Serpentstooth · 19/03/2025 08:32

Binged. Usually give up on this kind of thing by Ep3 so, overall , worth watching.

the80sweregreat · 19/03/2025 13:54

I’ve only seen two so far, as much as I like SF she seems a bit miscast in this and I am also distracted by her hair which is silly as it’s not that bad , but I’d be tying it back if it was my hair!

Serpentstooth · 19/03/2025 17:12

Men looking the same. I'm old and now they've all grown beards, the men all look the same to me, I can't tell who's who. Someone change the fashion soon, please.

MabelMoo23 · 20/03/2025 14:20

Have just binged - is there a binge thread as can’t see one!

was good, huge gaping plot holes but still really enjoyable

I have done the same and can’t find one. Don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that the stunt scenes and wig made me lol though? Feel mean but think they could have done it a little better?
