We love a ch5 drama. Usually unbelievable but fun to watch

A chilling new drama series is coming to Channel 5 in the coming weeks, with none other than Sir David Suchet in one of the leading roles.

The new series is coming to Channel 5 on Monday 10th March at 9pm, as it promises to delve "into the complexities of family, trust and hidden truths, against the backdrop of the picturesque British countryside".

Episodes will air across four nights, with the finale airing on Thursday 13th March at 9pm.

The Au Pair would air on the channel, telling the story of a diabetic father (Agatha Christie's Poirot star Suchet) who moves next door to his daughter Zoe (Beyond Paradise (www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/beyond-paradise-season-3-bbc-release-date/)'s Sally Bretton).

But when Zoe hires French au pair Sandrine (Ludmilla Makowski), she triggers an unsettling shift in the household.

Sally Bretton, of Not Going Out, Death in Paradise and Beyond Paradise fame, is leading the cast as mother-of-two Zoe Dalton. David Suchet plays her father George.

Vera's Kenny Doughty plays Zoe’s husband Chris. Lupin's Ludmilla Makowski is Sandrine, the "beguiling young French woman", who Zoe hires as an au pair.

Zoe is a woman who appears to have everything: a handsome and successful husband, two adorable stepchildren and a stunning home in a beautiful English town.

But, you guessed it, everything is about to go wrong for Zoe.

Yes, Zoe makes the unwise decision to hire Sandrine as an au pair. She's described as a young French woman who "triggers an unsettling shift in the household, as instincts and suspicions arise, hinting at hidden agendas and long-concealed truths".

The makers also hint that not everything is as it seems in Zoe's marriage. And that the couple are facing marital issues, while Zoe's dad George moving in next door further complicates life.

The series is written by Michael Foott (Desperate Measures) and Andy Bayliss (The Good Ship Murder (www.whattowatch.com/watching-guides/the-good-ship-murder-cast-plot-trailer-and-everything-we-know)
).

You think he is in on it

bjt that happened 20Yrs + and they have been together 2yrs

I thought that might be why he has tied her up in the boot? He might have been a doctor at the hospital where she had her baby.

mybelovedghostandme · 12/03/2025 23:25

@Blondeshavemorefun oh how I miss Pauline behind that curtain lol

He’d be too young, surely? Maybe not in tv-land.
I think he altered the hospital records though.

Maybe

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/03/2025 10:13

Tho if he altered then he would have known it would say baby’s died and surely would have agreed to it to put her off the scent when she asked to see the notes

I think he kidnapped her due to walloping his daughter over the head and kidnapping her

not anything to do with baby

I have binge watched it as I am poorly (that’s my excuse 🤣). Totally ludicrous throughout.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 13/03/2025 18:38

Watched the first episode. Couldn’t get into it. Seems to be a theme with me at the moment.

Timeforachange67 · 13/03/2025 19:13

One of the most confusing things was David Suchet’s character, in the first episode he seemed like a doddery old man then suddenly he’s handing out canapés at the party and driving to his ex wife’s to make sure she lied to Zoe!

Yes, I clocked that from seemingly being unable to get out of his armchair and forgetting to take his meds, he suddenly seemed to have a new lease of life! 😂

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/03/2025 19:49

He obv has a big part of play or why else hire him

I think he’s only doddery when doesn’t take his insulin

The ET bit was hysterical. And then her dangling legs looked like The Wicked Witch of the West!

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/03/2025 22:11

wow. No one watched ? Or like me and watched and didn’t want to miss it and mn

so Chris was involved. Well done to who said that

he was selling babies and trying to blame George her dad

who tech was trying to protect and look after Zoe as she was 15 but obv went a cock arsed way about it by saying her baby died

Chris was up to his neck in it -

someone on here said about how he afforded the house

obv by stealing babies

and taking his daughters bf baby as well

I take it by the last scene all is forgiven

chris is in prison

she’s heavily preg

S is in her life

and wants a grandad in her life

The last two episodes were better than the first two but…playing happy families at the end, really?
So Sandrine forgives George and he forgives her for messing with his meds.
Amber forgives Sandrine for knocking her out with a bread board.
In fact everyone forgives Sandrine for being a complete psycho. Not sure I’d want her around my forthcoming baby if I was Zoe.
And George miraculously survives the medication that Chris injected him with, presumably because an ambulance turns up in the nick of time. Although it was going to take an hour when Raye was in labour…
It was a load of bollocks, but entertaining if you didn’t take it too seriously.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/03/2025 23:45

They all forgave each other it seems

apart from Chris

wife daughter fil son and now step daughter all hate him

assume is he rotting in jail forever

The gorgeous house belonged to his first wife. Didn’t Zoe mention that in episode 1? I felt it was very rushed at the end, I didn’t notice that Zoe was pregnant though. I watched all of it, loved the house, but wondered why she had put an ad for the au pair on the back wall of the exclusive clothes shop!

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/03/2025 06:06

I thought it was their house. As in first wife and dh

she moved in

I admit that I watched the last two on Wednesday night and didn't want to risk posting any spoilers etc.
I couldn't believe they forgave the au pair even if it was her daughter. She could have caused a miscarriage pushing her off the steps or worse ( even though she didn't know she was pregnant) and I'd also be wary of having her about.
It was all very silly and I didn't suspect the husband at all at first.
(I started watching 'love rat ' and need to be quick as I think it's being taken off in a few weeks time. The scenery is lovely. )

I'm enjoying it. It reminds me of those American daytime Channel 5 films which I record with the format of
"Nanny/long lost adopted sister wheedles herself into a family.
She is evil but appears nice.
Everything starts to go wrong and no one connects it with the imposter but blames a family member, who realises the imposter is evil etc."

Edited

To add to the above re it following the format of American Channel 5 films. They often end with someone you thought was a nice character being a baddie (Zoe's husband Chris) and someone who seemed horrible coming good (Sandrine.)
It was silly and unrealistic but I enjoyed it.

kerstina · 14/03/2025 12:12

I thought it was a mills and boon type channel four thriller. Sandrene thought her mother had given her to the horrible adopted parents who abused her . I liked the way we saw her growing to love and understand her mother and realise she thought that she had died . A happy ending . Sort of lol

the80sweregreat · 14/03/2025 13:56

Watched Love rat and although the story was ridiculous, it wasn’t as bad as the au pair and now I know where the tarpaulin references come from now too ! 😆

butterpuffed · 14/03/2025 14:52

Well , absolutely ridiculous , and you had to suspend your belief . Great fun though ~ every time a Ch 5 drama is on you think they can't get any worse but this one was a cracker ! 😂👌
