Episode one was really strong

The cringey scenes at Ella and Fi's house were brilliantly done

Proper ML level cringe behaviour

CurrentHun · 08/02/2025 07:48

There was a line when the new boyfriend said ‘I love kids’ or something and I was worried he was going to turn out be dangerous. Him getting bitten by his machismo was beautiful. I wished they had shown the months of convalescence at her house that would have been so tense. What would the kids feel about it and how would they get on? Her ex?

Amanda is so well characterised that I know character would be so inwardly happy about how protective we feel of her and that people are talking about her (while immediately commanding us all to loads of degrading tasks for her)

Dream W3 aver
I adored ' lead balloon'
It didn't really reach many people's radar back in 2010 / 11 on bbc 3 , but it was just brilliant especially the depressed cafe owner so beautifully played by Tony Gardner.

I did chuckle at all the Irish cousin Pats on Ann's zoom call.

My Irish side of the family is like this with Jim’s/Jimmies and one of the many Jim’s is married to Pat who is daughter of Pat and Jimmy.

kerstina · 08/02/2025 09:33

I didn’t take the character of Johanhas but could see him coming back as Amanda’s mums boyfriend ! My favourite bit was when the chef saw herself on the advertisement 😂

I’m loving how the kids (as teenagers) are featured so much more in this series. So accurate.

Also loving how Joanna Lumley’s relationship with her grandkids has improved dramatically! She is a stand out in this series. I love her.

Me too! I love ML but the kids never speaking and JL's character were annoying. Felicity has softened a bit and the kids' dialogue is bang on.

I think they missed an opportunity not having the 'co-parenting' as a storyline but Johnny was so wooden in ML then perhaps it's for the best 😆

HotCrossBunplease · 08/02/2025 09:51

I was really struck by how well cast Joanna Lumley and Lucy Punch are as mother and daughter. They have really similar mouths.

Ha I agree about Johnny but he is noticeably absent - he was in ML a lot. Maybe in this series it’s reflecting what can happen when ex husbands have their own kids?.

I love how Felicity has softened and we can all warm to her more. She is fabulous! She was definitely too evil
in ML. But I think that was to make us feel sorry for Amanda (which otherwise was a tall order!).

I think even a few pointed remarks about Johnny now focusing on his new family would have explained him not being around. But unless I missed it, I don't think he was even mentioned?

They mentioned that he stopped paying for the Tesla.

Edited

Oh yes of course! And Ann told someone that he paid for the mortgage and something else...

But no mention of him seeing the kids (or not)

When Amanda said something about eating breakfast and Felicity looked her up and down saying something like
'Hmm you're doing that again'. Ouch.
Also when felicity and Fi met and looked each other up and down then both said 'fashion'. These little one liners make it for me.

I've only watched eps 1-3. It's enjoyable but I agree, different to Motherland.

It is baffling that the writers seem to have forgotten key character points particularly re Anne. Though I hadn't thought about it as a PP suggested, we living in 'Amandaland', so are seeing it through Amanda's self-absorbed lens. So Anne's personal details are blurry or downright wrong because Anne is a supporting character in Amanda's universe and Amanda just isn't interested to know what happens in other people's lives beyond what serves her own interests. It's an interesting viewpoint.

Plus the weird Harlesden/Hounslow thing. Did the writers think we wouldn't notice? Why not just make up a Harlesden or Willesden team name?

As a PP mentioned, why does Joanna Lumley live in London? She got the house in the divorce. She was divorced in the Mother's Day episode of Motherland, when she visited from Cheltenham. It seems unlikely that she remarried, relocated and divorced within in the last few years. Never mind being able to keep that house after such a short marriage. There has been no mention of Cheltenham at all so far. Same as the changes to Anne's house. It just feels like a continuity error, which makes me question whether we are being generous with the POV stuff for Anne. I know it's a light comedy show but these things are irritating. When you carry key characters over, you should make sure you carry their backstory over too!

Mind you, they were sods for doing it in Motherland too. Julia's mother was supposed to live in Leatherhead, but we were supposed to believe that she provided regular wraparound care for the kids. Leatherhead - Acton is a good hour+ (not in rush hour school run time).

Back to Amandaland. I'm not a fan of Della & Fi either. I realise they are to demonstrate Amanda's social climbing ambitions aren't dead, despite her slide down the social snake, but ugh. Della's sneering annoyance is too much and something about the Fi character gets on my wick. I don't find either of them all that likeable.

Wouldn't Amanda want to be moving Out to somewhere like Cheltenham or, brrr Leatherhead if possible as a commute

paranoidnamechanger · 08/02/2025 10:46

Oh no @Lalgarh Amanda is definitely a Londoner through and through! I had a look on Rightmove yesterday and three bed flats in Harlesden sell for £650K. Johnny must be doing well! She would never move to the sticks.

Lalgarh · 08/02/2025 10:51

There's always Surbiton Amanda...

In a very spooky coincidence I'm just listening to Cabin Pressure and Anna Crilly was announced in the end credits cast list.

I've recently binged all the Lead Balloons for about the third time but don't think I've come across her in anything else

Lead Balloon was genuinely brilliant. A bit of an underrated gem @DreamW3aver.

@fingerbobz, the plot holes/inconsistencies bother me because there are so many and they are so obvious and basic. Especially in a spin-off of a programme that aired as recently as Motherland (final episode Christmas 2022) and is still available to view. It's not like ML last aired 20 years ago, so the details are lost to the annals of history. It's lazy writing, as a PP said.

Porcelainpig · 08/02/2025 12:11

I really liked this. Wasn't sure after the first episode, but it was really good and liked the characters. I thought Johannes was hilarious. I think there was a bit of a Julia thing going on with the restaurant owner drowning in stress and just wanting a break, and her wife being into lots of different hobbies all at once and a bit oblivious.

I'm not sure about Mal and Amanda as a potential couple, which seems to be hinted at.

I liked the influencer pisstaje stuff too.

ThePoshUns · 08/02/2025 13:41

lol at Felicity cadging £20 notes off Johannes

GellerYeller · 08/02/2025 14:08

Amanda handing Anne back her gift hamper at the Football awards and Johannes shouting ‘’Patek Phillippe watch’ over the noisy air con made me laugh.

Anyone hoping for a series 2 with, hopefully, some cameos from the original ML cast?

ThePoshUns · 08/02/2025 14:31

' if you're eating carbs isn't a cry for help I don't know what is'!
Great ending.
I hope there is another series.

EmpressOfTheThread · 08/02/2025 14:50

Very enjoyable. I really like Joanna Lumley, her character is great.
I used to teach with an Amanda - she was absolutely unbearable, so pretentious and self absorbed, it's really well observed!
I love the hostility between Anne and Della!

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 07/02/2025 23:41

I loved it.

My favorite line in the whole thing was - our Kelly.

Yes brilliant! Just posted on the other thread. I think this is much wittier as less overblown than Motherland. Better writing. "I've got a phd from Imperial" "That's not a degree, Anne!" and the Shin fame/Sinn Feinn comment. Very funny. JL abs excellent but they are all good.

I feel like both Motherland and Amandaland scripts get passed around a bit and the writers add to them and edit them and that's where the inconsistencies happen. A bit like Friends with its team(s) of writers and often changing a character's backstory in order to fit a joke.

Turmerictolly · 08/02/2025 16:13

Yes, 'I've got a PHD in Chemistry from Imperial' conversation made me laugh.

discdiscsnap · 08/02/2025 16:50

Just binge watched Amandaland, very good I thought. I really enjoyed motherland except for Julia who I found really annoying. So this is even better.

Also loved lead balloon.
