I did like it but I did think it was geared to a different generation than the original motherland. Probably necessary for TikTok exposure but I felt it was less ‘middle aged’ than ML, I guess because the production team are now a different generation. Lots of drug references.
I loved the styling/ set design of Della’s house… would love to hang out there. Johanna Lumley was just an old Patsy in lots of ways but I guess she’s typecast and that’s what she does best.

OurFlagMeansAfternoonTea · 08/02/2025 17:27

I liked it and quite fancy Mal. Lucy Punch is a very good actress.

Remember when Meg said she would bring the beans (which apparently means drugs) to the weekend cottage. I was a bit shocked at that but I did wonder if it's because I am slightly older than the age group they were supposed to be.

And Julia turning down the promotion because she'd just witnessed a woman trying to order drugs from an uber or something (referring to Meg in No Mum Left Behind)

Hufflemuff · 08/02/2025 18:31

Loved it!!! My favourite part was when Anne thought Johannes was African royalty because her accent made his name sound like "your highness" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Amanda is the right amount of bitchy that you root for her to get back up, but when she gets too smug you root for her to be taken down a peg too!

Floralnomad · 08/02/2025 18:52

I thought JL was really good in this and I can’t normally stand her . Highlights were definitely R Kelly and Anne teaching Maths .

ChessieFL · 08/02/2025 20:08

I binge watched it all today and really enjoyed it. Lucy Punch plays Amanda so well because she is a hideous character but you still can’t help feeling sorry for her too. I wasn’t sure about the Della/Fi characters at first but they grew on me as the series went on. I hope there will be another series.

The inconsistencies with Motherland did annoy me though - although as others have pointed out Motherland itself had lots of inconsistencies within it. When it started Liz’s children were both really young but by the end she was looking at secondaries along with all the others.

BnmLK · 08/02/2025 20:20

Without question the Mal/JJ relationship is the best thing about this.

Mumofyellows · 08/02/2025 20:44

Binged it all today, I thought it was really good fun, so real laugh out loud moments and good characters, really hope there's another series!

Delatron · 08/02/2025 20:50

It’s really set up for another series. (With Mal and Amanda getting together). I’m guessing they were waiting to see the reviews but from I’ve seen they are resoundingly good.

Perfectlystill · 08/02/2025 21:40

This is such clever television. Just brilliantly written.

Anyone who's spent any time at the school gates, manning a stall at a school fair or drinking at a school quiz night will definitely have come across a version of Amanda.

And the supporting roles are genius.

Great telly.

VillageFete · 08/02/2025 21:50

Only seen the 1st ep, but thought it was brilliant.

Lucy Punch & Philippa Dunne are sensational actors. Lucy’s facial expressions are genius.

Nothing will ever compare to ML, but this is a great second best.

It’s really annoying me as to how she’s crossed paths with Anne again. Firstly, i’m guessing Amanda stopped seeing/socialising with Anne and the other characters- but did Anne stop seeing/socialising with the other ML characters, and why is she now in the same area as Amanda? I really think this should be explained!

Fibrous · 08/02/2025 22:05

Thought the first episode was too cringe but on episode five now and really enjoying it. Anne listening to James Blunt was hilarious.

amandaland just doesn’t work without Anne. I’m not bothered about the inconsistencies, I guess they’ve just shoehorned things in to make the comedy set up work.

lots of laugh out loud bits.

Anne may have moved house...it doesn't look like she's in the same house as ML. Meanwhile Amanda sent her kids to private school for a few years (even though Johnny refused to pay in ML). So now she has to send her kids to state school, they meet again. Anne wasn't really friends with the others...although Kevin would have definitely tried to keep in touch with everyone from primary school. 😆

FrogsLoveRain · 07/02/2025 23:41

I think Marion always lived in London. She stayed with Julia's sister in Leatherhead when the sister had a baby.

I'm guessing as Felicity is wealthy that she has more than one property.

Anne's house is completely different. She's moved- just not explained.

Marion definitely lived nearby as they go to her house when they are trick or treating.

RunAwayTurnAwayRunAwayTurnAway · 08/02/2025 23:56

But Anne has massively downsized. She had a bigger house than Amanda in ML, not so chic-ly styled. I think it was detached. Her new home is poky and shabby and there is no divorce/ separation reason for it.

I snort laughed when Amanda ugly cried saying she’s not ready to give up Regency proportions.

MabelMora · 09/02/2025 00:02

Nitpicking about this, that and the other just sucks the enjoyment out of it. Who cares if Hounslow is miles away from Harlesden, or Anne's other children were MIA? Just take it for what it was - a funny and entertaining watch with some very gifted comic actors.

No, they don't. That's not her house.

Marion is house sitting for a friend when they go trick or treating.

(Think I've watched ML too much!)

Yeah i agree, I think it should have been written that Amanda made Anne move with her 🤣 she totally would have just done that.

Surely it's aimed at 40/50 something women, same as ML?

I've said this before but I think the MNs demographic is a bit older. Agree Amandalland definitely targeting 40 somethings.

fingerbobz · 09/02/2025 08:54

Im guessing that Johnny and Tamara have two kids now. They live in Isleworth 😅

Johnny was awful . Nouveau riche 😂
