New 5 part drama starts next sun 26 Jan

For 5 nights consecutive

If there’s one thing Sheridan Smith is sure to do, it’s deliver a standout performance.

We do love a SS drama here on telly addicts 😂

From her gut-wrenching portrayal of grief in BBC One’s Four Lives (www.stylist.co.uk/entertainment/four-lives-episode-three-review/607622) to her hilarious cameos as Smithy’s sister Rudi in Gavin And Stacey (www.stylist.co.uk/tag/gavin-and-stacey),

we know the Bafta-winning actor is sure to rise to the occasion. No wonder that we’re seriously excited for her upcoming thriller series.

Smith and Céline Buckens (Showtrial (www.stylist.co.uk/tag/showtrial)) star as sisters in
The Castaways
, a new Paramount+ drama series based on Lucy Clarke’s bestselling novel.

Here’s everything to know so far, including the newly released trailer for the series

After a huge fight on holiday, Lori (Smith) boards a plane to Fiji, while Erin (Buckens) does not.

The flight never arrives at its destination and months later, no wreckage has been located.

But Erin refuses to believe that her sister is gone.

When Erin learns that Lori’s credit card has been used on a remote Fijian island and later recognises the plane’s pilot on CCTV, she boards a plane to Fiji to track down the truth. Sounds dark and intriguing.

As well as Smith and Buckens, the series also features Brendan Cowell (Avatar: The Way Of Water) as pilot Mike Brasse, Dominic Tighe (The Boys In The Boat) as fellow passenger Daniel Eldridge, Lasarus Ratuere (The Tourist (www.stylist.co.uk/entertainment/tv/the-tourist-bbc-one-2/765846)) as Felix Vatuba and Charlotte Vega (Burial) as Amber Gordon.

On the series, author Lucy Clarke said it “promises to be an incredible adaptation; the scriptwriting
is electric, and Sheridan and Céline are perfectly cast as Lori and Erin”.

Nobody could prove how the others died though especially after six months.
Dh was amazed that the chocolate they found didn't melt!

Yes, that struck me too! It made a very firm snap when SS broke off a piece!

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2025 10:42

Now, that's basically it ! lol
I also zoned out a bit on some of it too.

Who was the gun woman, though? And did she get left on the other island forever?

purpleme12 · 31/01/2025 10:55

Presumably she did yes!

I think she was hired by the beardy man's wife to kill him? Maybe other posters can confirm if that's right?

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2025 11:01

I do think that the hit woman with the gun was left to rot !

Smoke signal to the rescue

I still don’t get how she worked out the scratches /ripped shirt

Why did they have to wait until they found the lighter to be able to light the fire for the rescue, but in the previous two episodes they had a fire on the beach to sit around and flame torches to light up the beach/living area at night? Did none of them think, "hang on, we can take a flame torch up the hill to light the fire". And how on Earth did they light the beach fire and torches without the lighter?

Now don't ask sensible questions like that.

Neither should you ask things like they were all completely starving in some episodes and then had a ready supply of fish to cook, although apparently the fish were all where the rip currents were in a previous episode and unsafe to venture anywhere near enough for proper fishing. etc. etc.

Am I right in thinking that Amber-the-Mistress hid the lighter so they couldn’t make a smoke signal because she was so crazy in love with Dodgy Murderous Weakling Man that she preferred living on raw fish on a remote island with an unset broken leg and a baby with him, even though he was pretending not to know her, to being rescued and having access to medicine and a flushing toilet?

Yes, it was a pretty luxurious camp with magic fire, clearly.

And clearly not the budget to send all the actors off to do a Tom Hanks in Castaway and live on 300 calories a day for months to get emaciated? Amber-the-Mistress was so thin at the start that, even leaving aside breastfeeding, she’d have been dead in a fortnight!

purpleme12 · 31/01/2025 14:59

Magic fire 😂

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/01/2025 15:08

Mumsnet fire. Like the chicken 😂😂

Yes you are right on all counts.

I just think that the ending was too ridiculous by far. It almost reduced the impact of the entire series to utter farce. And let's face it there were farcical moments throughout.

Of course they could have had Lori and Felix sailing off and settling somewhere else within civilisation and basic amenities.

It made me question why I had even bothered watching it. Big thumbs down from me.

I expect Domino's deliver pizza to whatever island they settle on.

Whereislove25 · 31/01/2025 23:17

My god, what an absolute pile of crap. I was getting into the middle episodes but that last episode - specifically the ending - was so unbelievably unrealistic it was actually funny. What the hell were they eating to keep alive?

I forgot as well that in the second episode the psychiatrist who “operated” on Amber’s leg despite not working in an ED department for 10 or so years… I also doubt that when he did work in ED he was operating to prevent people’s legs from being chopped off. Impressive work on his part.

Honestly, just ridiculous. How can producers and TV companies make these shows and actually think they’re half decent?

purpleme12 · 31/01/2025 23:18

Well apart from the ridiculousness I enjoyed the watch...

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/02/2025 16:08

Maybe it will return in a few years. Now a toddler and they fed up and wand life again

so sister finds them on another island and they go back to the world again

What happened to the sea plane sister, hit woman and Mike the dodgy pilot used to get to the island with the spooky bunkers? Sister and Mike the DP didn't use it to escape hit woman ( don't know why? maybe they preferred to risk getting shot in order to use the boat)
Presumably hit woman could have used the sea plane to escape spooky island and wouldn't have spent the rest of her life there?

purpleme12 · 01/02/2025 18:24

I don't think she knew how to fly

butterpuffed · 01/02/2025 18:25

Well, I watched all episodes yesterday and today . Channel 5 has surpassed itself as it was such a load of crap ! The reason I kept watching it was because it was making me laugh , one unrealistic scene after another , so I quite enjoyed it !

butterpuffed · 01/02/2025 18:48

And what was that about when both Lori and her sister were sitting down reading The Enchanted Forest ,blood on them both . Then the camera switched to a picture of their parents dead in a tent ...

Haven't read the whole of the thread so may have been explained as skimmed through it .

I was busy binging something else so took me a while to get around to this and I watched it over a couple of nights, exactly the same feelings as you. I mean there's obviously a semblance of plot there, but on a scale of unlikely, highly improbable and off the scale, the plot holes and denouement really took the biscuit.

I was entertained, but not, perhaps, how I best like to be 😂

What

I didn’t notice dead parents in the tent 🙀🙀

Viewers learnt that Lori basically bought Erin up after the death of their parents. Although we never learnt exactly what had happened to their parents, we know it was traumatic. Viewers saw them dead in a tent while the girls read stories about an enchanted forest nearby.

I was wondering if I'd imagined it but went through reviews and the above is from the tvguide review .
