New 5 part drama starts next sun 26 Jan

For 5 nights consecutive

If there’s one thing Sheridan Smith is sure to do, it’s deliver a standout performance.

We do love a SS drama here on telly addicts 😂

From her gut-wrenching portrayal of grief in BBC One’s Four Lives (www.stylist.co.uk/entertainment/four-lives-episode-three-review/607622) to her hilarious cameos as Smithy’s sister Rudi in Gavin And Stacey (www.stylist.co.uk/tag/gavin-and-stacey),

we know the Bafta-winning actor is sure to rise to the occasion. No wonder that we’re seriously excited for her upcoming thriller series.

Smith and Céline Buckens (Showtrial (www.stylist.co.uk/tag/showtrial)) star as sisters in
The Castaways
, a new Paramount+ drama series based on Lucy Clarke’s bestselling novel.

Here’s everything to know so far, including the newly released trailer for the series

After a huge fight on holiday, Lori (Smith) boards a plane to Fiji, while Erin (Buckens) does not.

The flight never arrives at its destination and months later, no wreckage has been located.

But Erin refuses to believe that her sister is gone.

When Erin learns that Lori’s credit card has been used on a remote Fijian island and later recognises the plane’s pilot on CCTV, she boards a plane to Fiji to track down the truth. Sounds dark and intriguing.

As well as Smith and Buckens, the series also features Brendan Cowell (Avatar: The Way Of Water) as pilot Mike Brasse, Dominic Tighe (The Boys In The Boat) as fellow passenger Daniel Eldridge, Lasarus Ratuere (The Tourist (www.stylist.co.uk/entertainment/tv/the-tourist-bbc-one-2/765846)) as Felix Vatuba and Charlotte Vega (Burial) as Amber Gordon.

On the series, author Lucy Clarke said it “promises to be an incredible adaptation; the scriptwriting
is electric, and Sheridan and Céline are perfectly cast as Lori and Erin”.

When they were sailing away on the boat I looked at the time and knew there must still be a fight to come!

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/01/2025 21:59

Ha. Knew it. Preg

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/01/2025 22:01

Tho what will they live off

No food really

WingingItSince1973 · 30/01/2025 22:27

So they going to live alone on that island. Hope she doesn't need a c section. How will they cut the cord. How will they make clothes. Wouldn't they get bored? My dh was a bit offended when I said I'd be bored if it was just him and me 😂 I'd miss tea and chocolate. What if they need pain relief? What if I stop overthinking?!

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/01/2025 22:39

Maybe the sister will pop in and see them once a month and bring fresh supplies

but yes I would be bored Shitless or what

no ch 5 dramas 😂😂😂

or Pauline

purpleme12 · 30/01/2025 22:41

I think the ending was the most unrealistic bit 😂😂 and that's saying something 😂

Blondeshavemorefun · 30/01/2025 22:43

But it was a good drama for ch 5

i did enjoy

tbh we all did

That was the daftest thing I've ever seen!!
After 6 months- so well fed and glamorous ( the ones that weren't dead that is) have they never seen Bear Grylls Island series?😂
When Erin and Mike were on the first island with psycho woman why didn't they just go back to the seaplane??
How did they build those huts worthy of a luxury Maldives hotel complex (refer to the Bear Grylls lot again) complete with funky beach torches and shelves ffs😂
Who on earth thinks ..hmmm need to get rid of my girlfriend.. I know I'll pay a pilot to crash a plane ( which I'm gonna be on as well) and in the ensuing mayhem she might accidentally die at some point and then everything will be grand.
It was so bad it was completely hilarious. They must've paid Ms Smith a lot of money or maybe she just fancied spending a few months in Greece/Fiji. It sure wasn't the script or plot!!

friendlycat · 30/01/2025 23:04

I’ve just watched it an hour later. Sorry but the ending was just utterly ridiculous. Remarkable that the lighter is still going.

I wouldn’t have minded if they could have lived happily ever after but at least with civilisation and reality.

The ending has annoyed me!

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 30/01/2025 23:22

Absolute tosh. But I still watched it. Glad I’m not the only one thinking about Sheridan smith giving birth on a remote island. Rewatching Gavin & Stacey and a very young brilliant Sheridan in it.

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2025 06:44

Dh said ' I'd be so bored on that island '.
I was thinking about fresh water and washing facilities and what if she needed a C section or how to light a fire once the lighter ran out and what a ridiculous ending it was
The rest wasn't too bad , Sonny barely stirred and the fight scenes were exciting.
The two main leads made it a bit realistic at times and I didn't hate it, but that ending ! lol
Hope we see Celine in other things as she's a good actress

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2025 06:52

I did like the Rudi character in Gavin and Stacey! SS is a versatile actress.
When they did that fist punch routine when they met up was so slick and I'm glad we saw her briefly in the Christmas episode too!

daffodilandtulip · 31/01/2025 07:22

The ending ruined it. I know it was all ridiculous but the ending was just stupid. They could have sailed off anywhere and then shown them with a lovely house with, you know, electricity and stuff.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 31/01/2025 07:26

Wondering from those who have read the book if the ending is the same?

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2025 09:20

I did think we would see the couple living on another island somewhere, which would make much more sense.

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2025 09:31

Why couldn't Felix go back to another island ? I was a tad confused by that ! ? Was he a wanted man ?

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/01/2025 09:47

I think he was worried he would be blamed for all the deaths again the way he was previously

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 31/01/2025 09:48

Fresh water being a main thing but food

what happens if she can’t bf

anD when baby is a toddler/5 and needs school

they could have dissapeered and bought new id from the big pay out cheque sis has

obv she will help them

OP posts:
friendlycat · 31/01/2025 10:19

I just think that the ending was too ridiculous by far. It almost reduced the impact of the entire series to utter farce. And let's face it there were farcical moments throughout.

Of course they could have had Lori and Felix sailing off and settling somewhere else within civilisation and basic amenities.

It made me question why I had even bothered watching it. Big thumbs down from me.

the80sweregreat · 31/01/2025 10:37

Nobody could prove how the others died though especially after six months.
Dh was amazed that the chocolate they found didn't melt!

NowThatYouSayIt · 31/01/2025 10:40

I only caught fragments of two of the ‘middle’ episodes of this and a trailer, but was kind of enjoying piecing together the major daftness.

So, am I right in thinking that Dominic Tighe’s character wanted to hire Rough Pilot to bump off his mistress before she showed his bazillionaire wife the ‘proof’ of their affair, Rough Pilot said ‘No, but I can fake engine trouble and land us all on a remote island for a few days while you bump her off’, but there’s a storm, the plan goes wrong and they crash land on the wrong island without food or shelter, everyone writes them off as dead, apart from Sheridan Smith’s plucky sister who had missed the flight because she’d been shagging Rough Pilot who had a soft spot for her and prevented her getting on the fateful flight?

Then I’m deeply fuzzy about how they survived for six months with the help of an ex-military possible wrong’un, while Dominic Tighe pretends not to know his mistress, or her ‘proof’, their baby, and there are shenanigans about chocolate, a lighter, and making a raft with hairdryer cords, Rough Pilot steals off with the raft and, despite having no food or water and being shot with a harpoon by Sheridan Smith, makes it to land after weeks at sea.

Then I draw a complete blank about how he re-encounters Sheridan Smith’s sister, and who the woman with the gun who ends up shooting him is? Does someone off Dominic Tighe after he offs his mistress? What about Sonny the well-behaved baby? And Sheridan Smith and Possible Ex-Military Wrong’ Un decide to stay ‘dead’ and live alone together on the island forever?

Blimey.

friendlycat · 31/01/2025 10:41

Exactly there was no way of proving how any of the survivors died after that period of time. There was Lori as a witness and then Erin as a witness in terms of Mr Eldridge/Dan's death.
