Starting this thread (as I did this time last year) as the comments on the episodes on telly addicts are always so funny it makes it worth while sitting through the totally unconvincing plots, characters, so called relationships and ...

But who knows maybe this year will be different!

BBC One - Silent Witness, Series 28, Exodus 20:17 - Part 1

The body of an elderly woman found in a cave presents a disturbing mystery for the Lyell.

I found their love declarations in the venue, where Nikki was talking about not knowing her own heart but now she wants to give it to Jack, and for Jack to give her his heart etc absolutely nauseating.

Them as a couple is just so unbelievable!

I can’t believe Emilia Fox agreed to it all. It’s just so random and they’re so ill-suited 🤣

IwantToRetire · 10/02/2025 16:44

I suspect we are meant to think Nikki is intrigued by his great intellect!

If you notice over the series what the programme makers thought would be a huge selling point (stupid male violence and over developed physic) have gradually disappeared.

Rather than the taming of the shrew, the taming of the he man.

She's exec producer so presumably had some say in the development of their romantic relationship.

I was quite amused by her jumping off the steps half hanging on to his arm. Thought she'd literally climb him like a tree Grin

I wouldn't kick either of them out of my bed, though, so no objections from an aesthetic point of view, even if it is a bit of a silly storyline.

Zero friends wedding. Hilarious. I love this show as part comedy and how implausible it all is.

Its the fact that they make no attempt to maintain the reality of previous series.

Former work mates could have been asked.

The niece or who ever she was.

All those detectives who pop up regularly and make sly jokes about them.

It would have been different if they had already moved to Birmingham or where ever.

But as is so often said on this thread, the implausibility of it all is part of its charm.

Oh dear Lord. Has anyone seen the last 2 episodes? Clearly went on far too long (took them a whole episode to see the military link) but the last bit as the worst of what has happened to it...literally turned into a Hallmark movie 😱
Anyone else hearing alarm bells that neither of them were able to sustain friendships? I kept hearing DARVO! in my head. He was all jealous and overly sexual again. Maybe it's to keep men watching?

I suspect we're supposed to think he's fantastic in bed. Personally I wouldn't touch him with a bargepole, and I'm surprised Nikki doesn't have better taste.

He even said in this one that his mate has brain injuries from boxing that means he has no memory (clearly the next season's story line set up for poor Nikki to endure) and neither of them went "eek! Better get your noggin checked out then" even after the whole episode being similar. I can just hear the MN vipers going on about "Well, if a certain type of woman will marry these good for nothing men,so what do they expect!". So badly suited for each other and all she does now is the fey smile.

I thought it was quite good.

Apart from the schmaltz!

Cal was responsible for the shootings in the Syrian cafe wasn't he?

Had half a thought it may have been the guy that he shot.

deeahgwitch · 12/02/2025 00:28

I thought it was the guy Cal shot who murdered the Syrian people in the restaurant @diddl

Agapornis · 12/02/2025 09:07

As I understood it:

Guy who went to Syria killed people in Syrian restaurant, for no other explained reason than 'Syria'. (Did the lovely food bring back memories, Marcel Proust madeleine biscuit style?! Did they run out of fattoush?? We shall never know.)

Syria guy's PTSD is so bad he no longer wants to live, so asks Cal to kill him.

Crap bit of writing to have such a big dramatic opening scene with many dead, and then pretty much ignore it.

".....Crap bit of writing to have such a big dramatic opening scene with many dead, and then pretty much ignore it."
I agree @Agapornis

The search for the Syrian murderer went on for a while but it was unclear. I only realised that it couldn't have been Calvin as he was killed when he had hostages.

They never mentioned poor Chalky ( he was a potential best man ) with the brain problem again either. It was like it was dropped in to help rather dumb viewers understand a little about brain injuries.

Jack will undoubtedly get memory loss thanks to his rough boxing days and cage fighting and poor Nikki will have turmoil to deviate from actual pathology, as per all Jack stories.

The episode didn't need 2 parts. It could have been better if any of them had rubbed a couple of brain cells together to think a shooting in a Syrian restaurant could be linked to the war, within 12 hours in real time. It was obvious in the shop the "mates" weren't there but again the whole psychosis side left largely unexplained. All very woolly and again, trying to do too much without any real result.

diddl · 12/02/2025 16:02

Thanks.

I thought that they'd placed Cal at/near the restaurant at the time?

Wasn't particularly paying attention though.

When he was telling his ex that he was hearing things-I had wondered if his friend really had wanted him to kill him!!

deeahgwitch · 12/02/2025 17:59

@diddl I could have it wrong.
Hopefully someone else on the thread will clarify.

Phthia · 13/02/2025 18:25

I watched "Red Joan" on Prime recently (not bad, I recommend it). One of the characters looked very like a young Leo and, when I checked, the actor was Freddie Gaminara who has to be William's son. It struck me that there must be an excellent opportunity for some sort of prequel there, if they fancy it.
