New drama series starts wed and thur for 3w

Patience Evans (Ella Maisy Purvis) works in the criminal records department of Yorkshire Police, cataloguing and filing the evidence produced during major cases.

A young autistic woman, she craves routine and order, relishing the solitude and structure her job provides but she yearns for more.

A brilliant, self-taught criminologist, Patience has an instinctive eye for crime scenes and a passion for problem-solving.

Detective Bea Metcalf (Laura Fraser) is the first person to spot and utilize her talent, which opens a door into a whole new world for Patience.

Patience attends a regular support group for autistic adults where they discuss the barriers in operating in a neuro-typical world and how best to navigate it.

All neuro-divergent characters within the series will be played by neuro-diverse actors, including the title role of Patience.

Patience has a special interest in solving puzzles and a secret interest and talent for criminology as she can read a case file or a crime scene and make connections that others can’t.

Detective Bea recognises Patience’s unique insight and takes her under her wing.

She wants her to work with her team on the frontline of policing.

As they start to become more closely involved professionally, however, it becomes clear that they may have a more profound and lasting impact on each other’s lives.

Also, dh and I found the flashbacks weird, like they were set in the 50s or something, yet Patience was said to be 12 "in the 90s" - would a doctor genuinely think schizophrenia rather than Autism in the mid 90s?

And then if its set now, that would make Patience at about 30, which seems older. And I can't take my eyes off the actress who plays Beas wig.

I've watched 2 episodes and realise the thread has moved on but wanted to say something about this. I'm autistic and I was misdiagnosed in 1985, aged 16, and admitted to hospital, admittedly with depression rather than schizophrenia.

Most psychiatrists were trying to be approachable back then rather than scary, many let patients use first names rather than Dr xxxxx. I met people who were diagnosed as schizophrenic, mute, bipolar, ... and for someone to be diagnosed schizophrenic back then they'd have had to have shown quite extreme behaviour, not just non-verbal and self-isolating.

I also feel they've given Patience too many obvious autistic traits and people talk to her too much in hushed tones so we know she's 'different'. Hope there's more humour in later episodes too.

That said, I'm enjoying it, recognise bits of myself in Patience and appreciate the representation.

E5 tonight

patience races against time when a body disappears from the morgue

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 22/01/2025 21:11

So did the body walk out or get stolen

I am confused (again)

It seems like Patience brought in Paul's clothes to the mortuary. But then it looks like the mortuary person told her to take them and wash them? But she'd just taken them in?

And ... Why do they ask if Paul could have left on his own? If he's dead?

purpleme12 · 22/01/2025 22:27

Or maybe it was a different set of clothes she brought home to wash??

When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

Working backwards. A body has gone missing.
What are the ways a body could go missing from a mortuary?

It could be stolen.
The person could not actually be dead.

So how do they know he had died - and is there any other way that someone could appear dead without being dead?

purpleme12 · 22/01/2025 22:38

Well this is very scary

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/01/2025 23:45

Confused again

I've only just watched but think I need to head for the recap 🤔

butterpuffed · 23/01/2025 15:19

Hmmm , even the writer of the recap doesn't think much of it , says the ending was incomplete , and doesn't appear to be impressed with the rest of it .

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/01/2025 15:51

Recap didn’t really make much sense to me either @butterpuffed

I can’t wait for Astrid tomorrow 🙂

I watched the first ep of S3 earlier, and I'm sure I hadn't seen it before, so I think I'm a season behind.

butterpuffed · 24/01/2025 16:04

It's annoying when they leave the last one on a cliffhanger [the puzzlebox] , setting it up for the next series 🙃

purpleme12 · 24/01/2025 16:08

Well I won't be tuning in for the next series...

When Patience was shot and Bea got poorly and Patience was distressed I just felt like I couldn't care less and I'm not sure that's what the writers were going for. 😂

I was annoyed everyone on the bus got off considering it was anthrax. I know they didn’t know that at the time but surely the clues were there when they were wearing masks. I’m not sure I’d watch another series either. I guess we’ll see if/when the time comes

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 24/01/2025 16:57

I liked it but I’m easily pleased 😂

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/01/2025 17:55

Same as @WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout. I’m easily pleased

but did get confused at times
