New drama series starts wed and thur for 3w

Patience Evans (Ella Maisy Purvis) works in the criminal records department of Yorkshire Police, cataloguing and filing the evidence produced during major cases.

A young autistic woman, she craves routine and order, relishing the solitude and structure her job provides but she yearns for more.

A brilliant, self-taught criminologist, Patience has an instinctive eye for crime scenes and a passion for problem-solving.

Detective Bea Metcalf (Laura Fraser) is the first person to spot and utilize her talent, which opens a door into a whole new world for Patience.

Patience attends a regular support group for autistic adults where they discuss the barriers in operating in a neuro-typical world and how best to navigate it.

All neuro-divergent characters within the series will be played by neuro-diverse actors, including the title role of Patience.

Patience has a special interest in solving puzzles and a secret interest and talent for criminology as she can read a case file or a crime scene and make connections that others can’t.

Detective Bea recognises Patience’s unique insight and takes her under her wing.

She wants her to work with her team on the frontline of policing.

As they start to become more closely involved professionally, however, it becomes clear that they may have a more profound and lasting impact on each other’s lives.

I'm watching it because I'm from York .
I found it a bit Jarring , because a lot of the architecture was obviously not York .
I looked up the film locations. A lot of it is filmed in Antwerp , Belgium . A lot of the scenes around the police station have very Belgian style buildings ( they've tried to blur the background ).
A lot of the interiors of flats etc are clearly of a European style ( I even spotted European light switches ) .
It seems a bit odd to film it in two such different places . Why not film in one place or the other , or at least 2 places that have a similar look ?
I am aware that this observation might seem odd 😂.

@ProjectBananaseems very weird they filmed abroad

Apparently Antwerp has Gothic and Renaissance buildings like York does from what I read so maybe that’s why they filmed in two different places

It was the more modern residential buildings and some blocks of flats that were obviously not York . ( The scenes around the police station ).
The scenes of patience walking through town and the drone shots are York . Basically all the beautiful historical streets and buildings are York .
I have lived in Belgium , which is perhaps why the very Belgian houses jumped out at me .

So if all the beautiful buildings and historical streets are York, why did they film the more modern buildings and flats in Belgium? I’m sure York has those too. Was the flat where James Cooper jumped because of the drug in Belgium?

ProjectBanana · 10/01/2025 09:07

I'm on episode 5 at the moment , so can't 100% say without having to go back to episode 1 .
As far as I can see , the majority of scenes around the police station and interior scenes are not filmed in York .
The scenes where Patience is waiting for the bus , is York ( I recognize the building behind ).
All the scenes by the river are York . All the scenes of Patience walking through town are York ( The Minster , The Shambles etc.)
The exterior of Patience's house is York ( by the Minster) , but the interior is in Belgium.
Basically, all the gorgeous bits are York .
In episode 5 , one of the buildings is in France 😂.

I know that TV and film productions use different locations to film , it just jars a bit when the architecture isn't even from the same country .
I'm finding myself playing a game of York/not York 😄.

Please don't let me put you off coming to York though . All the beautiful bits are York !

I thought it was revenge for her sister who thought she was going to a property to wait on table but was taken advantage of ie raped. All 4 men were present and presumably took part in this horrific attack.

purpleme12 · 10/01/2025 18:18

Ok

But how did she do it exactly?

purpleme12 · 10/01/2025 18:20

And how did she know she was raped?
Did she tell her who the people were who raped her before she went missing? And how did she know where to find them to kill them?

DearestItIsSnowing · 10/01/2025 18:33

I like Astrid: Murder in Paris very much, and rewatched s1&2 just before s3 was shown.

I enjoyed Patience very much, too. As PP have said, it’s similar to but not an exact copy of Astrid.

As to filming in Belgium, it reminded me of Professor T where the original series were made in Belgium. Some of the English version is filmed in Cambridge but most of the scenes filmed inside buildings are not. I must take the hint to look at the electrical sockets!

I’m particularly enjoying the Yorkshire accents on Patience.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/01/2025 20:52

Yes i got the 4 men abused her

but I couldn’t work out how she killed them

was it a drugs

as the bloke who jumped off the building - James I think name was

he seemed in a trance /hypnotised before jumped

I want to enjoy this but I’m struggling, I think the crimes aren’t making sense to me, I didn’t really understand the conclusion of the first two episodes, it felt like so much was put into creating a strange crime and way of killing but then how it was carried out didn’t really make sense. How did the sister know what happened to her sister or who did it? How was the exact right amount of the drug administered and how were the men encouraged to commit suicide when under the influence of it?

Im currently watching E3 and a bit lost with it to be honest, Patience keeps having revelations but then they’re not really explained in enough detail for me to follow. I’m finding too many cut scenes where she’ll work something out but we don’t see her explain it. I just can’t really follow what’s going on. I much preferred Ludwig which had a similar premise - civilian who loves puzzles helps police solve unexplainable crimes - but I am struggling with this despite really wanting to like it as I usually like female leads and I am autistic myself.

mum2jakie · 10/01/2025 22:57

Enjoyed the first two episodes even if I didn't understand everything to do with the murders!

What did shock me even more was that the main police officer (Bea) is played by the actress who played Lydia in Breaking Bad!! I thought she looked familiar but didn't realise she was the baddie from that series until my son recognised her!

JewelleryCat · 10/01/2025 22:58

@MolkosTeenageAngst try Astrid Murder in Paris if you haven’t. Patience is based off that. The actress who plays Astrid is NT but she does it so well that you do think she is autistic whereas the actress who is playing Patience is autistic

Also, this murder, the drug one I can’t spell lol that’s just been on is in Astrid and it might be explained better

Thanks I’m surprised the actress playing Patience is autistic because I’m not really liking the way they’re portraying her as an autistic person, it seems a bit stereotypical/ rainmanesqur to me where she is solving these crimes so quickly and immediately noticing every pattern. It doesn’t l feel representative of myself or most of my autistic friends, although I appreciate everyone’s experience is different. Is the Astrid show only in French or can I watch it dubbed into English?

It is in French with English subtitles if you’re ok with subtitles and should be on All4. You might like Astrids way of thinking, I think she connects the dots slower and as the series goes on (there are 3 or 4), Astrid and Raphelle (who is Bea in the English version) form a lovely friendship

Aah unfortunately I’m not great with foreign language with subtitles as I struggle to watch TV if I’m not doing something else at the same time and it’s hard to do anything else when you need to be reading onscreen the whole time. I can just about manage subtitles for the length of a film but don’t think I’d be able to watch 3 or 4 series unfortunately.

That’s completely understandable, some people aren’t good with subtitles. I love them so I don’t mind them lol. I’m not sure if anyone has dubbed Astrid into English anywhere but keep trying with Patience. For me, I shouldn’t but I compare Astrid and Patience lol and the people
