I'm in tears. Maybe I'm just emotional but can't believe how much the show means to me

And the ending... tidy!

I rewatched last night and have spotted a grievous error I don’t believe I’ve seen addressed anywhere else.

Sonia says that Smithy doesn’t know who is who out of Gary and Simon. But not only have they had their own named shirts more than once but in series 3, when the lads come to Barry, it’s Gary but NOT Simon (no need to explain) that is there. So that is patently rubbish. So does he fail to correct her deliberately to stay on her good side? Or is the sort of clanging issue with continuity that could bring my love of the show down?

Could well be Smithy staying quiet out of self preservation. But with the shirts, he could've had them done and just assumed they would put on the correct one? I liked them saying 'Gary N' and 'N Simon' 😆

Re watching myself now and have just got to series 3 so I'll pay attention to the boys coming to Barry bit.

Aintnobodygottime · 29/12/2024 08:57

Yeah, your points above could be an explanation. But obviously once Simon has gone, what is left must be Gary.

I do like the fact that it’s left ambiguous whether they are best mates or a couple.

I've read all the G&S threads on MN and it's so obvious some posters haven't watched it from day one, the serial killers surnames for example, one poster said it was a revelation.....really? It was known from series one about this.

I also think that if you didn’t watch it in 2007/2010 then you’ll never really get the show. Like the Office was very 2000s, you had to be there understand where it’s coming from. Understand that it was deliberately following the format of the Airport and Cruise which had been huge shows in the late 90s. That had breakout stars and that’s who David Brent was trying to emulate….become a Jeremy or a Jane macdonald!

It’s strange how things come and go. The name Shipman was so unfortunately funny/wonderfully bad taste because it had only been a few years since it had been such a big news story. Now that’s nearly 25 years ago and there will be people watching G&S who have no idea the significance of that name, or sutcliff or West.

But there will be so many jokes like this. Doesn’t mean you can enjoy the show but it will never have the same impact watching re runs in 2024 for the first time

It’s like Monty Python. I’ve never really found it that funny. But I’m not supposed to. It was of a time and place, where the show was so wild and subversive, unlike anything else that had been on tv, it was a sensation. Adults hated it, young people loved it. But you had to be there. I wasn’t, so it doesn’t have the same impact.

Aspargar · 29/12/2024 09:36

Also, when you watched the 2007/2010 run, it was a little naughty and not exactly family viewing.

Yet, the last few Xmas episodes stripped all that out and became almost wholesome family viewing. I hate that they did that to the show.

It ends for me series 3. Which ended perfectly with smithy and Nessa co parenting (with probably the odd shag). They aren’t a believable love story and hate that’s the avenue they went down. It’s almost as, being the two writers, they wrote themselves a much bigger part that they ever should have been.

Aspargar · 29/12/2024 09:40

But I think they went down the sentimental route and an unnecessary focus on Nessa and smithy….because James corden is trying to rehabilitate his image.

No.
I've never watched a single episode of it, so I wasn't interested in watching the finale.

Well no i guess you wouldn't be would you 🙄

It was always really about Nessa and Smithy.

It's been a trope in fiction and drama since forever- people meet and instantly hate each other then end up together.

Edited

Could they also be twins? I think there is a mention of Gary and Simon’s uncle with the “one ball of Wimbledon” joke in Series 3, but I could be wrong as I haven’t watched it back recently.

Oh, interesting. I remember the One Ball but not the G&S (good initials there) bit. Good catch.

Yes, these last two specials were really bland.

I agree that Smithy and Nessa are unbelievable as a couple. I found him and Sonia much more credible.

Wasn’t the last special supposed to be the final chapter? No doubt Ruth and James will cook up something again soon in the ‘let’s pay off the school fees or pay off the mortgage for that second house in the country’ mindset.

Harmonypus · 29/12/2024 17:05

To those of you who sarcastically quoted me in a response, the question asked was, 'did you watch it', and i simply replied that I hadn't.
The fact that so many people did watch it doesn't bother me, and I didn't feel it necessary to make a sarcastic comment about all the hours of your lives you've all wasted watching 'some programme', or some other sarcastic remark about you all, so why should I have to be on the receiving end of your sarcasm?
Clearly, not everyone watched it, nor should we have to, so why should only those who did, be 'allowed' to respond to the OP's question?

I don't think the OP wanted the statistics of who did or didn't watch. She could easily find that out. I think she was expecting a discussion about the programme. Just saying you didn't watch it is an over literal response.

Harmonypus · 29/12/2024 20:30

Maybe then the OP should have worded the question as something along the lines of 'if you watched it, what did you think of it?'.
If you ask open questions, expect answers from all camps.

Aintnobodygottime · 29/12/2024 20:45

Did you really think the OP just wanted a series of posts saying ‘yes’ and ‘no’? What would be the point of that?

Ellen2shoes · 31/12/2024 00:03

I too watched it for the first time when I was looking for some mindlessness during a period of grief and found it weirdly uplifting.
I’m an ardent convert! Love it. Sheridan Smith’s Rudi is wonderful too and her kids’ names made me smile.

Well I think it's because they're not core cast, they've only been small parts.

i think the 'reasons' were his mum not really wanting be there & just wanting to go home and his sisters two kids being sick.

just my thoughts.

@MumOfOneAllAlone

yes. I did, I cried a tiny bit (I'm at a friends & would have had the piss ripped out if me, it would have been different had I been home alone) the bit I cried was ness saying goodbye to Neil - the baby.

So good, can't believe how much it all touched me 😄

I watched it on my own yesterday and I’m glad I did because I had a right good cry. It wasn’t the storylines as such more the end of an era and all the things that signifies. And what my life was like 17 years ago when it started and how much everything has changed since then. I’m getting emotional in my old age. I feel really stupid but I can admit it here as it’s totally anonymous!!

I honestly think that’s normal. The sense of time passing, of being middle-aged now if you were late twenties when it came out, parents who were newly retired 17 years ago being “elderly” now, grandparents no longer living and so on. And those things are played out on the screen - the natural visible ageing of the cast members, the acknowledgment of the late Doris, the low-key stag party etc.
