As for Vito.. he has been partnered with someone twice his age who admitted to being obsessed/sniffing his shoes, and i think i'd be a bit creeped out by that too.. i think he is making a good show of being friendly, but would rather be rid of Sarah asap. He is covering his dislike/unease by being OTT.

Lentilweaver · 01/12/2024 11:26

Kai has been partnered with people twice his age twice! And now benched.

Vito will have to suck it up. As did Katya.
His choreo for Sarah has been terrible, IMO.

AlexaSetATimer · 01/12/2024 11:57

Given my favourite tonight was JB, who is top of the leaderboard, even if he lands in the dance off, he will be safe.

But what if he ends up against Tasha, who is obviously an amazing dancer too. I'd agree it's def time to be voting for your favourites no matter what.

The thing with this 'ringer' issue is the rules have always been the same, they're not allowed to have any ballroom dancing background/training.

Throughout the whole time its been on (and i've been watching it from the first season) there have been celebs on there that went to theatre school, did ballet, tap, some commercial, or theatre dance... i just feel that of late, people have got more and more pissy about it, and there is no need.

Debbie McGee spoke about the fact that her background in ballet gave her flexibility and the understanding of dedication to learning dances, but the discipline of Ballroom/Latin was completely alien.

I liked Debbie, but the narrative that she was "only" a former professional ballerina was a bit disingenuous. She'd also worked as a jobbing hoofer, having to dance in a variety of commercial styles at short notice. In her younger days she had a similar level of experience to Janette. She got a pass because she was significantly older and recently widowed: likewise Sarah doesn't get much flack because her age balances out her prior training.

The other thing that distinguishes the ringers and near-ringers is that they have been pre-selected for natural talent. Someone like John Waite or Amanda Abbingdon who carried on dancing into their late teens would only have done that because they had the raw materials. If you're not gifted then you won't keep at it. That's not cheating of course, but it does mean that people with prior dance experience will normally be better even if they don't have specific transferable skills.

AlexaSetATimer · 01/12/2024 12:02

The fact that you are able to write off a whole genre in the way you do without any exceptions does not make you highbrow - quite the opposite. It suggests someone who desperately wants to be thought highbrow but isn’t.

I agree with @TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCrossx it shows a remarkable lack of judgement to dismiss an entire genre.

The jumping up and down and squealing from her is beyond irritating.

i really do think that if a male celeb admitted to being obsessed with the pro dancer they were partnered with, and were filmed sniffing their shoes, there would be things said.

The format of the show allows the public to vote using whatever criteria they like.
If being pissy about ringers is unjustified then being pissy about "better" dancers not coming out on top is equally unjustified.
I get irritated by people say X should win because they're a more accomplished dancer. Why? They get the judges votes for dance skill but the public use their own reasons to make their choice. Whether people like it or not it's as much a popularity contest as a dance contest.

It's fine to hate musicals, lots of people (/heterosexual men) do. You're not obliged to like any art form, be that opera, poetry, watercolours, film.

But to write them off as a valueless art form is pretty short sighted. Porter, Gershwin, Sondheim and Bernstein (to pick my personal favourites) are amongst the foremost composers of the 20th century by any normal reckoning. Andrew Lloyd-Webber, not so much.

i agree, the only time i get annoyed is when the judges under/over mark and then seem to get rid of the clearly better dancers.. i'm not sure the DO judgements lately have been entirely fair (mostly the one where they kept Wynne tbf)

I don't find her annoying. Dianne screaming on the other hand!!

Just booked to see Six after watching SCD. Ds2 who's in the navy is on leave and he's coming. If you met him you'd never imagine it, unless you knew him. 6 ft 4 northern blokey bloke. But he's a sensitive lovely soul. He's always up for anything. Ds1 is older but also up for most things but he'll be working. It's the day show.

Pashazade · 01/12/2024 13:14

I love Six, very sharp lyrics and it's fun, with a solid dollop of actual history!

What's the "actual history"? A debate about the trial of Anne Boleyn? The social impact of the Dissolution of the Monasteries?.😂

Samcro · 01/12/2024 10:21

isn't JB a bit of a ringer though?

disclaimer I know nothing about JLS

JB was on a celebrity dance talent show (Dance, Dance, Dance), with his wife, back in 2017, which was very similar to Strictly - learning and performing different dances each week.

xsquared · 01/12/2024 13:37

My guess is that JB would tuck his thumb in, therefore gaining favour from Craig. Shirley has the casting vote and scored JB higher than Tasha on this occasion, so would probably choose him over her.

I was disappointed Ted with Tasha's AT and I think this s only the second time Aljiaz has done Argentine Tango on Strictly. The other time being with Kate Silverton, which was forgettable.

Have we really only had 2 ATs this season? If Pete gets through AGAIN, then we might see him dancing one. I expect JB would smash it.

Montell really struggles in heels so I can't see her dancing an AT, if she gets through.

Isn't Sarah younger than Kylie? Hardly anyone thinks of Kylie as a mature lady and can still see her willing in her gold hotpots whole belting out "I'm spinning around!" I find it a bit patronising when people say "Wow! Isn't she fantastic doing that as a mature 50 something lady". She's hardly in zimmer frame territory!

If a male contestant admitted sniffing their potential partner's shoes, there would definitely have been a lot more public disgust against him, denouncing him as a creep.

Speaking of which, I started watching Strictly the year after Aliona left, but it's now obvious why she wasn't happy being paired with Gregg Wallace. Not that he was a duffer, but more to do with the fact that he's creepy. There's even a Strictly YouTube video of him having his wardrobe malfunction during training, and casually admitting he wasn't wearing any underwear. 🤢

Sarah. She said so during the launch show.

Every year I hope someone is going to dance to a song from the musical Camelot. I absolutely adore that film.

That sounds a bit bizarre.

FaceLikeACrackedScreen · 01/12/2024 15:30

Whizzed through the dances on catch up earlier. I love JB, I think the pair of them are having a great time together, he seems like a nice chap. Shame he won’t win.

Chris is my next favourite. Tasha, no 3.

I find the rest of them a bit meh in differing degrees. Montelle - boring, Sarah all legs and lifts, Pete - just rubbish.

FagsMagsandBags · 01/12/2024 15:45

I honestly don't get that people find Montell boring but it goes to show that we all see different things from different dancers. I knew nothing about her but being an ex-athlete and gladiator I thought she'd be a bit stiff, a bit "must do dance, must compete, personality is for losers" and she's the opposite of that. I find her quite a joy to watch and I absolutely love her partnership with Jojo. They seem to have been so well matched and they look absolutely beautiful together.

I do find Tasha and Aljaz boring but I know that some others like them. I can't warm to Pete but others adore him or at the very least find him a warm and humble chap. I do agree wholeheartedly with everyone who loves Lauren and is enchanted by the JB and Lauren partnership. I wish we could have duel winners because to see Chris win for at times - like this weekend when he was woefully undermarked - being an absolute joy to watch and making us forget that he's blind and then remember and oh my, alongside JB and Lauren for being the loveliest dancers full of so much warmth and more of the joy would be such a pleasure.

Sorry, that was two paragraphs of waffle and yet I'm still going to post it!
