Our Flag Means Death - Thread 5: Ahoy! Surrender! You have no chance of escape!

Hi all!! Roll up for thread 5 and join our chat about our favourite show, its cast, its music, fan edits, fan fiction and more than a little obsessing over our fabulous leads - pictures extremely welcome! It’s utterly brilliant, and some of us are still in the grips of obsession many months after the last episode aired (the last for now, that is… We live in hope🙏)

If you haven’t yet seen Our Flag Means Death, what are you waiting for? Go watch it (on BBC iPlayer), then come back and join us.😀

You may have heard that this is a comedy about pirates and think it's not for you. But it’s actually a show about self-discovery, healing and found-family with a love story at its heart. The joint leads are both damaged by abusive backgrounds and want what the other has. It’s tender, romantic, funny, emotionally intelligent and utterly refreshing. It subverts genre expectations. There is comedy, absurdity and a good amount of heartbreak and despair - sometimes in the same scene! The acting is outstanding (Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby especially). But the writing, music, costumes, sets, the sheer attention to detail – for a show with only 18 half-hour episodes it is still keeping us talking, two full threads and many re-watches later.

If you think this might appeal, do watch it and come back and talk to us. It would be lovely if more were to join our crew. But it's a show that needs time. It’s structured like a theatre production with a prologue and 3 acts. The 2nd lead arrives (briefly) in episode 3, and in episode 4 (the start of Act 1) the tone changes and the main story begins. You need to give it at least that long. It gets better and better and it still took me several more episodes to fully appreciate what I was watching, but by then I was hooked and had to immediately watch it all over again. If you like Good Omens, What We Do in the Shadows, Ghosts or even Bridgerton, this might be the show for you.

(I’ve kept this spoiler free, but if you scroll down you will no doubt find many, so beware!)

Ooh exciting! The easiest for me are Birmingham or Sheffield, except that it's right in the middle of A levels (which may of course have finished by the time of the Sheffield one).

I shall have to check some dates and keep my fingers crossed 🤞

I’ve already twisted DH’s arm for Birmingham tickets for my birthday 🙃

Phineyj · 14/11/2024 18:48

I would gladly meet anyone who fancies either of the London dates!

I’m exhausted looking at that list!
I have no idea how performers do it.

Womblewife · 14/11/2024 19:19

Is there going to be another series? Please tell me there is!

Hello @Womblewife and welcome to the thread 😁. We would absolutely love to tell you that there will be a third series, but sadly we can't do so. Some of us live in hope that it will happen one day, but at the moment it is cancelled and has not been picked up by an alternative streaming service. Not for any want of trying by David Jenkins, cast, crew and fans.

I expect they're used to it. And maybe that they have their own stuff going on, particularly as the kids are older now. I've no idea though!

His eldest’s at uni and in a band. I think his wife is used to it. After reading his autobiography, Rosie is the absolute backbone of all of this and I’m in awe.

Yes, Great Big Cow! Rhys does a great job of helping promote it. Must be good for their exposure. I follow Rosie on Insta (not that I actually open it that often). She seems brilliant.

I follow her free substack where she talks about her knitting amongst other things. 🤣 He has a few older sisters too and I think they’ve all kept him very grounded.

TriceratopsRocks · 15/11/2024 09:35

Do we both sound very internet stalkerish? I'm not entirely sure! 🤔🫣😆

Yes. 🤣 The sister stuff was from his autobiography. He’s the baby of the family by like a decade and I think you can tell 🤣

Booked my tickets!! For Glasgow, which turns out to be the second last night of the tour. And this time, unlike for the cryptid show, I managed to get one of my family to agree to come with me 😃

Phineyj · 20/11/2024 14:36

Booked for Ally Pally in May.

@TriceratopsRocks can I just say the phone sex operator one is divine. Emotionally intelligent Ed and ‘Bratty’ Stede. My god! Very good writing, too.

Hehe glad you liked it - I know I did! 😁. I read another on similar lines a while back where it was a web cam situation but I didn't bookmark it and haven't found it again. I could do with going all the way back through my history and deleting or bookmarking. I've already deleted plenty but it's still getting too unwieldy.

@TriceratopsRocks @MrsJellybee I loved it too. Funny and sweet.
Although WashCloth was miscast I feel - his role is to be wrung out in warm water and tenderly applied, not chucked at each others heads! <the horror>
