Our Flag Means Death - Thread 5: Ahoy! Surrender! You have no chance of escape!

Hi all!! Roll up for thread 5 and join our chat about our favourite show, its cast, its music, fan edits, fan fiction and more than a little obsessing over our fabulous leads - pictures extremely welcome! It’s utterly brilliant, and some of us are still in the grips of obsession many months after the last episode aired (the last for now, that is… We live in hope🙏)

You may have heard that this is a comedy about pirates and think it's not for you. But it’s actually a show about self-discovery, healing and found-family with a love story at its heart. The joint leads are both damaged by abusive backgrounds and want what the other has. It’s tender, romantic, funny, emotionally intelligent and utterly refreshing. It subverts genre expectations. There is comedy, absurdity and a good amount of heartbreak and despair - sometimes in the same scene! The acting is outstanding (Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby especially). But the writing, music, costumes, sets, the sheer attention to detail – for a show with only 18 half-hour episodes it is still keeping us talking, two full threads and many re-watches later.

If you think this might appeal, do watch it and come back and talk to us. It would be lovely if more were to join our crew. But it's a show that needs time. It’s structured like a theatre production with a prologue and 3 acts. The 2nd lead arrives (briefly) in episode 3, and in episode 4 (the start of Act 1) the tone changes and the main story begins. You need to give it at least that long. It gets better and better and it still took me several more episodes to fully appreciate what I was watching, but by then I was hooked and had to immediately watch it all over again. If you like Good Omens, What We Do in the Shadows, Ghosts or even Bridgerton, this might be the show for you.

Just had an email from Starfury that confirms the 5 guests, but for some reason Nathan is an 'extra' guest. No idea what the difference is though!

I presume you've all had the same email. I can't believe it's only 2 weeks away!!

Extra guest autographs must be purchased by all ticket holders apparently. I’m going to wait, as the email said group photos going live next week, so if he is possibly going to pull out surely it would be before then. If he attends I would be up for a group photo….any takers to join me?!

My stewards invite came on Tuesday (I'm not volunteering, although I might have if I was going alone). They may be sending them out in batches.

But at least Nathan is on the list, so any photos/autographs should be fine. I'm wondering if he can't make the Friday night, or some other time, that means his status is slightly different.

That’s annoying about the extra guest autograph. Not sure what I’m going to do about that now.

I don’t think I can stretch to a group photo. People are saying they’re the cost of everyone combined so, what over £200? Will have to see the cost. I’ve already paid for Rhys which was £55.

Yes, I hadn't clicked earlier that extra guest means no 'free' autograph. There is some moaning about it in the Facebook group, as the organiser had previously said Nathan was a bonus guest and has now backtracked saying that wasn't official. If you open all the comments it's there.

For the photos, everyone in the photo has to buy their own ticket, so sadly (or frustratingly!) there's no bringing the cost down by having multiple people share ☹️. If it's the combined price of all, then that's too much for me. I haven't bought any photos yet. I'm still undecided.

Yeah, @TriceratopsRocks is right. It’ll be the cost of individual photos combined meaning about £200. But we will all pay that each. No splitting. I just can’t stretch to it.

I have just created the WhatsApp group for anyone going to Heathrow who wants to be in it 😀. It will make communication/meeting up easier when we are there. If you want to send me a private message with your phone number I will add you in.

From the Facebook page it seems they haven't sold as many tickets as they hoped, which may mean a quieter event. That could be a good thing (quieter!) or bad (too quiet!!). I'm like Goldilocks hoping for just right 😄

Interesting comments from the organiser about the fifth guest i.e. Nathan coming out of his pocket at a loss. Plus meet and greet normally being £300-500 😮

There’s 180 in the Facebook group. I don’t know how that compares to other events or how presentative it might be of the total number.

I'm glad Nathan is going to be there. I haven't booked any photos and don't currently fancy shelling out for an extra autograph on top of the Golden Ticket price and the hotel - but it'll just be lovely to see him

Haha definitely 😂 You know full well I'd say that! But yes, he is absolutely gorgeous, especially with the relaxed, slightly ruffled look he had going. Exuberant and funny when performing; quieter and thoughtful when chatting afterwards. It's the best evening I've had in years. Not just because of Rhys. The show was amazing (I think we had the best night - I've seen videos of the others). And his costars on the podcast were just as delightful. Especially Buttons - I might even give him the crown of loveliest human on the planet!

I’ve just finished his 2012 autobiography today because I want him to sign it, and I thought I should do him the courtesy of having read it. And I just have so many questions now…He’s definitely walking to the beat of a different drum. 🤣
