Our Flag Means Death - Thread 5: Ahoy! Surrender! You have no chance of escape!

TriceratopsRocks · 04/11/2024 22:06

Hi all!! Roll up for thread 5 and join our chat about our favourite show, its cast, its music, fan edits, fan fiction and more than a little obsessing over our fabulous leads - pictures extremely welcome! It’s utterly brilliant, and some of us are still in the grips of obsession many months after the last episode aired (the last for now, that is… We live in hope🙏)

If you haven’t yet seen Our Flag Means Death, what are you waiting for? Go watch it (on BBC iPlayer), then come back and join us.😀

You may have heard that this is a comedy about pirates and think it's not for you. But it’s actually a show about self-discovery, healing and found-family with a love story at its heart. The joint leads are both damaged by abusive backgrounds and want what the other has. It’s tender, romantic, funny, emotionally intelligent and utterly refreshing. It subverts genre expectations. There is comedy, absurdity and a good amount of heartbreak and despair - sometimes in the same scene! The acting is outstanding (Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby especially). But the writing, music, costumes, sets, the sheer attention to detail – for a show with only 18 half-hour episodes it is still keeping us talking, two full threads and many re-watches later.

If you think this might appeal, do watch it and come back and talk to us. It would be lovely if more were to join our crew. But it's a show that needs time. It’s structured like a theatre production with a prologue and 3 acts. The 2nd lead arrives (briefly) in episode 3, and in episode 4 (the start of Act 1) the tone changes and the main story begins. You need to give it at least that long. It gets better and better and it still took me several more episodes to fully appreciate what I was watching, but by then I was hooked and had to immediately watch it all over again. If you like Good Omens, What We Do in the Shadows, Ghosts or even Bridgerton, this might be the show for you.

(I’ve kept this spoiler free, but if you scroll down you will no doubt find many, so beware!)

I hit a new low/high this week. Sometimes I volunteer in primary schools to help with RE lessons. This time we were doing teaching about your treasure being where your heart is and making little treasure chests as a reminder. Perfectly reasonable to open the session with ‘Right! Who likes pirates?’!

Can I just say as a mum with a kid still in primary, and who knows too well the state of our school system after years in it previously, thank you so much for being a school volunteer. People like you are worth their weight in pirate gold.

And second, that you connected treasure to pirates? I’d be disappointed if you didn’t!

I wear a little pirate hat some days when I teach online for no reason than I think I look cool (I don’t, but Stede Bonnet has stopped me caring about this sort of thing).

MrsBruin · 11/11/2024 09:26

@MrsJellybee, thank you, that’s very reassuring and kind.
I also chose my new glasses (gold or purple frames) by saying ‘Stede or Ed? Stede or Ed?’ in my head! Ed won! I went for (slight) drama on the eyes, instead of my usual more restrained choice.

No plot. Just filthy, innkeeper naked garden sex. Enjoy. (9K)

That actually sounds like most many of Jodalyn's fics 🤣. She's written some excellent ones along those lines (yes I am subscribed 😁).

For anyone that loves From Reno, With Love, Rotten_Soldier has written some "short glimpses into the lives of supporting characters". I haven't read yet but will do. The Reno Cure: Fluffvember '24 Fics

Keeping with the fic talk, I've looked back through some of the ones I've been reading lately and there are lots I've enjoyed. None of them reach the dizzy heights of wonderfulness that YellowMustard, foxtails and a few others produce, but they were all good enough that I will re-read at some point (or have already re-read), and I do have a couple of them tagged as recommendations. Some are by authors we've mentioned before so may already be familiar, but there might be a few here that are new to some.

Other People's Holidays by Passingfair. Stede's Christmas plans fall through and new colleague Ed invites him to his mum's for a family Christmas. I loved this one. Mature.

meeting stede bonnet by darcylindbergh. Slow coming out story for Stede. Stede runs a bookshop and Ed a tatoo parlour (yes, yes I know 😂but I liked it). Explicit.

On The Telephone Line I Am Anyone by Dracothelizard. Ed's a phone sex operator. Stede phones in. (unsurprisingly) explicit.

Blow the Man Down by JavidDenkins. They share a hyperfixation about a TV show and a love for complex codes/puzzles. I let the author's summary put me off reading this one for ages but enjoyed it when I did. Explicit.

Starman by the-widow-olivia. Stede is a geologist who gets a spot on Apollo 17, replacing Ed the veteran astronaut. Explicit.

Nat 20 by PastorofMuppets. Ed runs a D&D cafe. Stede knows nothing about D&D. Teen.

The Two-Body Problem by GayPirateAficionado. Series. They meet at a conference. Only one bed trope. Explicit.

Such Joie de Vivre by louciferish. Ed is a thief, mistaken for the new nanny when trying to case out Stede's house. Explicit.

Modern Meet Cutes
Series of 11 meet cutes by passingfair. I love reading meet-cutes and these are great.

OK, I seem to have got carried away a bit! 😂. There are loads more but I'm going to make myself stop now!

Thanks for these @TriceratopsRocks l feel I started the Darcylindberg but must’ve got distracted. Will try again.

The group photo has been confirmed as £195 so I’m out.

Ouch. That's a lot, though not unexpected.

I ordered some cards off Red Bubble that I'm hoping to get autographed. Fingers crossed they arrive in time! Apart from Rhys' book, which is the obvious one, I wasn't sure what to ask any of the others to sign. I want Rhys and Vico. I'll check how much the others are when we're there, but DD wants me to get Nathan if it's not too pricey. The cards were less than £2 each. I got them from this artist:

Aww just watched the Boy and the Octopus on YouTube, 4 minutes of Taika magic!

DJ47 · 12/11/2024 18:32

That has changed from this afternoon - it was £160!! Not that I’m considering it if we can’t split the cost ☹️
Andy White’s art is beautiful isn’t it - I follow her on Instagram. So talented.

MrsJellybee · 12/11/2024 18:41

@DJ47 something was put on the Facebook page saying how much cheaper it as then deleted. I think they missed one if the guests off.

He really is. I want to see Klara and the Sun so much because I think he really gets childhood and especially the transition into adolescence and loss of innocence which Kazuo Ishiguro writes so well.

But it appears to be stuck in post production.

MrsJellybee · 12/11/2024 21:19

@BillStickersIsInnocent Ooh, I’ve not read Klara and the Sun. The Remains of the Day is one of my absolute favourite novels, but didn’t like Never Let Me Go too much. I’ll put it on my book club list, I think.
And yes, let’s hope the film gets past post-production. I like Jenna Ortega.

MrsJellybee · 13/11/2024 09:57

David shared this fan video yesterday. He said he shared it with his creative team before season 2. It’s just so beautiful. This show. 🥲

I’ve also opened an account on Bluesky. It’s like Twitter X but not owned by evil. David and Con opened accounts yesterday, and Con in particular is taking delight in swearing freely.

The fanmeets are up for the Saturday. I’m thinking they’re not worth the extra if we’re doing the meet and greet on Friday night. It’s £55 for Rhys 20 people, 20 minutes. £45 anyone else. Con’s already sold out.
