Are there any other Jilly Cooper fans out there? I feel ridiculously excited about Rivals coming out.

Haven’t started watching yet but have seen no mention of Patrick O’Hara - has he been written out?

He's in the cast list - played by Gabriel Tierney

I’ve only seen one episode and no sign yet but his agent says that this actor is playing the role:

I think the O’Haras are very well cast- loving it so far.

Patrick is mentioned briefly in episode 1.

Here's hoping they do the rest of the books. Oh Heaven!

Some of the books I couldn't finish

Wicked
Pandora (I might've got to the end of that)
Appasionata

Haven't bothered with Mount

Polo was a good one but I don;t want to see the plight of poor Tero on screen

I couldn't finish those three either or the man who made husbands jealous

Just listened to this on the back of this thread. Brilliant discussion. The thing that stood out for me was Marina said that many women who bought the books in the 80s and have shed most of their books but kept the Jilly Coopers.
That's me. I used to have wall to wall bookcases with 1000s of books. I've culled them down to two bookcases but still have all the tattered old Jilly Coopers. Mind you I just got Rivals out to tread again for the first time in over 30 years and the print is tiny. Might have to buy it on kindle.

I had to buy another copy the other day as mine had faded so much over almost 40 years. Still got almost all the others too

BestIsWest · 18/10/2024 14:57

I’ve still got my original copy of Rivals too but have just re read on Kindle. I think it’s 99p at the moment. I’ve gone back to read Riders again although it’s not as good.

SemmaLina · 18/10/2024 15:05

I’ve just started rereading Rivals , for the millionth time , before I watch on Disney
My copy is from 1988 ( pre husband )
I’ve lost the dust jacket , but I’ll manage

I loved those! I still have Imogen, Harriet and Bella, somewhere, I think!

TimeforaGandT · 18/10/2024 15:28

Phew - thank you all for the confirmation about Patrick.

Poffy · 18/10/2024 15:46

I'm torn. Should I re-read first or watch first?
I can count on one hand the number of books I have read more than once in my 66 years. Generally it's been when I'm about to watch the film.

Yes! I loved them all and sometimes re read them too. The description of the haircut transformation in Imogen, where she's in the south of France and goes to the hairdresser and is transformed, amazing! She's fat, obviously, at 9 stone or something 😂but is bought new clothes and is suddenly drop dead gorgeous. Cable was the villain in that one.

And Rory Balniel and the romantic Scottish highlands in one of them. Emily was it? And the houseboat where she tries to steal a school mate's fiance away from her, that's the one where she's in dungarees with nothing underneath.

If you're a fast reader, re-read first. I re-read about a month ago. But I reckon either way round would work!

CallMeMousie · 18/10/2024 16:21

I've been out in the orchard gathering apples (and yes, my husband does still buy them from the shop sometimes and I roll my eyes, Taggie style, when they're thudding on the grass outside) and I'm going to make a crumble and then curl up on the sofa next to a fire of merry apple logs with a glass of wine and watch at least one episode. How glorious!

Omg reading your post brought my teenage years straight back ! I really remember that particular bit- she was like a frizzy haired lobster who transformed into a sin kissed babe !
I think the house boat one was Octavia?!
My favourite was Harriet where she was Nanny to the swoony Cory? And ended up getting together with him.. ah memories!

I predict a surge in JC sales !

BestIsWest · 18/10/2024 17:08

JC is amazing at names isn’t she. Cable, for example, is a great name.

Imogen is my favourite of the Name books. I read it every summer.

Edited

Oh she is: Cable, Maud, Declan, Rory (Balniel IIRC!)

Lots of upper class / upper middle class names: Rupert, Agatha (abbreviated to Taggie, natch) William (Billy), Araminta, Rollo etc. And the older women: Gwendoline Gosling, Monica, I think there might be a Winnifred as well.

Cameron is an interesting one, when I first read Rivals I was sure she was black and when I reread it there is no mention of it and she's definitely not but is described as having dark hair. So it's interesting that she's black in this adaptation.

SevernWonders · 18/10/2024 18:45

One episode down, 7 to go.

I want to watch them all but also want to savour them. I have asked DH to limit me to two today.

Shinyandnew1 · 18/10/2024 20:06

I hope Billy and Janey are in it! I’m sure I remember Janey in the book-breastfeeding with her enormous boobs whilst quaffing Champers!

Manypaws · 18/10/2024 20:07

I'm sure they signed her and Billy up for Venturer

CheerfulBunny · 18/10/2024 21:29

Two eps in and I LOVE it!! It's perfect. The O'Hara's kitchen is exactly as I'd pictured it. And the casting is utterly inspired.
