I have never heard of auditions. I thought that was (effectively) what the Christmas show was for, a fun try-out for the main deal should they want/have time to do it. Rebecca A said in the past that she wanted to do the show, but she didn't say she 'auditioned' as in had a trial dance, she just met the producers.

"Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington has revealed that she was turned down by Strictly Come Dancing. The London 2012 star, who had been linked to a spot on the show, explained that she met with producers but was told she wasn't the right fit." (imbd)

They cast for a range of personalities and abilities. I am sure Bill Bailey was cast as the comedy contestant but he turned out to be a decent dancer - and winner!

Why did Rebecca Adlington not make the cut? She's fab! Doesn't strike me as a natural dancer but would definitely work hard & has a great personality!

Wonder how the audition process works??!!

I'm not sure how the entire process works but the few people who have mentioned it have said that you dance with one of the pros and it is not just about gauging your ability but seeing how comfortable you are dancing with a partner, dancing in front of people and so on. I know that one year Ian Waite, back when he was no longer on the main show but was on ITT, was the pro the female celebs danced with. I can't remember all the personalities involved but I also remember one of the male celebs saying that a female pro was who he danced with at the audition and she was so lovely he hoped he ended up partnered with her.

In my memory the Christmas show in the early days was exactly that, and people who'd been on it would often turn up later on the main show.
In recent years it's turned into a show for ex-main show contestants, which I don't like as much (although it was delicious poetic justice when Colin Jackson won it with a beautiful quickstep, having infamously lost the main show in the final).
I remember thinking last year's seemed more like a tryout show again though. Maybe they're moving back to it being that.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 09/10/2024 10:37

when Colin Jackson won it with a beautiful quickstep, having infamously lost the main show

The DOLLS cost Colin the final. <gavel>

Had he done a proper show dance he would have won!

xsquared · 09/10/2024 12:45

Werk 4 songs amd dances are out. Not sure about Nick and Luba as they will update us when they know more. 😕 Its sad when anyone is out early due to injury.

Billie Eilish again for the second week!

I know, I just didn't want to rehearse Dollgate again Grin

MarkWithaC · 09/10/2024 13:10

Choon and pick of the night for me is Pete & Jowita's quickstep to Town Called Malice. Come on Pete, nail it.
JB & Amy's rumba will be really sweet and touching (I think they'll go for that rather than a sexy rumba).
Katya's tango choreo for Money, Money, Money is going to take the ROOF off, I can see it now.

EsmaCannonball · 09/10/2024 13:15

Colin Jackson took part in Strictly back in the days when the money went to charity and the vote was open all week. I remember them telling us how many millions of votes Ramps got the year he won it. I think Monkseal has said that Darren was leading the vote going into the final and the godawful, creepy showdance (or any of the actual dances) didn't make any difference. Strictly had really pushed the 'blokey-blokes from the north, who definitely aren't gay, can learn to dance and win Strictly' storyline that year.

The showdance can make or break it for people, though. I think Colin would have won if they'd done a fantastic glitzy Fred and Ginger type routine. He could have done a few bits on his own (I remember Erin saying her reasoning was that she wanted people to see how well he could dance even without her).

Yes.

I remember distinctly Len going off piste and saying something a bit gobsmackjng
which sounded homophobic, and don't know if I should repeat

Shellingbynight · 09/10/2024 14:48

@MarkWithaC Yes I agree, I prefer the xmas show when there are new potential contestants rather than the ‘previous stars’ versions. You're right there have not been many ex-xmas show contestants recently. Jamie B of course, and Maisie Smith, but she was CIN not xmas. Can't think of anyonelse.

And yes, Colin Jackson woz robbed, but that showdance was a bad decision by Erin!

dapsnotplimsolls · 08/10/2024 18:28

People audition???? 😮

I assumed that was the case. They need a mix of funny, talented, and potential growth

Agree with all of this.

Also Punam and Sam have pretty banging tunes too so hopefully some fun dances this Saturday!

They do, but I'm nervous for both of them; jive is so precise and fast, and samba is famously difficult.
Fingers crossed for them both.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/10/2024 17:03

Yes, Punam's little dance-y clip with the song reveal didn't look great, but then who knows when they film those? Shayne's clearly doing salsa in his too, and he's actually doing the cha cha. Grin

It's good that they are being flexible with Nick and letting him do his Movie Week Charleston instead of a completely new dance. I think they have learnt the value of trying to keep people in the competition.

EsmaCannonball · 09/10/2024 18:43

Oh god, another theme week and coming only one week after Hallowe'en Week. It sounds like it could end up as Strictly Does Stars In Their Eyes. I'm very dubious about whom the Strictly producers consider an icon as well.

CrushingOnRubies · 09/10/2024 18:44

Jeanette has just announced music icons week for the week of 2/11. To celebrate their 20th year.

TennisWithDeborah · 09/10/2024 20:08

I’m looking forward to Saturday. Some excellent songs 🎵

Aside from Paul and Nick, I think that the glitterball could be anyone’s this year. It feels so open.

I hope that Nick returns. I am not a fan of his, I dislike him in fact, but I would like to avoid a two-couple final. The fewer withdrawals, the better imo.

Yes, if someone drops out I think that should be a no-danceoff week.

Aquarius1234 · 09/10/2024 21:01

Nick and Paul have been rubbish on Strictly. We could have had two much more interesting celebs and not awful or injury prone.

TennisWithDeborah · 09/10/2024 21:04

I’d actually like more couples to start, with a double eviction here and there if necessary because no one dropped out. A two-couple final is a bit dismal.

It’d make the early few shows very long but that suits me. The more dancing to watch, the better!!

xsquared · 09/10/2024 21:14

So there's going to be an Icons week and on the Sunday, a group dance to Beyonce medley will be performed, but Fleur already did a Beyonce medley for her couple's choice just two years ago!

By icons, I hope they have some true music icons and not just Billie Eilish and Ed Sheeran who both seem to be overplayed on Strictly at the moment!

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 09/10/2024 21:36

✨ Montell & Johannes Viennese Waltz to Nobody Gets Me by SZA lovely
✨ Punam & Gorka Jive to 2 Be Loved (Am I Ready) by Lizzo fine
✨ Sam & Nikita Samba to Hips Don’t Lie by Shakira banger (Anita/Gleb)
✨ Sarah & Vito Foxtrot to Birds Of A Feather by Billie Eilish must have been a very recent choice, that only came out 12 days ago?
✨ Tasha & Aljaz Charleston to Unhealthy by Anne-Marie, Shania Twain cowboy charleston?
✨ Chris & Dianne Salsa to Down Under by Men At Work vegemite Wink
✨ Jamie & Michelle Salsa to Danza Kuduro by Don Omar, Lucenzo choon
✨ JB & Amy Rumba to You Might Need Somebody by Kara Marni nice
✨ Paul & Karen Quickstep to I Won’t Dance by Fred Astaire I'm not asking
✨ Pete & Jowita Quickstep to Town Called Malice by The Jam Frankie/Kev
✨ Shayne & Nancy Cha Cha to Ain’t No Love (Ain’t No Use) by Sub Sub feat. Melanie Williams classic. TIL Sub Sub became Doves <mind blown>
✨ Wynne & Katya Tango to Money, Money, Money by ABBA Debbie/Robin

Nick will probably beat Paul with a reprised Charleston, even in pink jailstripes, unless Karen pulls it out the bag double quick step or the producers think Nick's a goner anyway. I do hope he gets to dance, as selfishly I want a four-person final.

Bowednotbroken · 09/10/2024 23:31

I've been to see 'Legends of the Dance Floor' - first night of the tour this evening. Great fun, lots of laughs, spectacular dances, lovely sparkly outfits and some stories about the old days from Pasha, Brendan, Iain, James and Vincent. Thoroughly recommend if you get the chance.
