Season four is about to hit our screens. If you haven’t watched it, I thoroughly recommend it. Gary Oldman is superb.

I can't believe it's going to be over.

How rude to give us 6 when they could have done 8.

I have read all of the Slough House books, and have reheard the audio books countless time - they are excellent by the way. I am enjoying this series, but it's nearly finished and so much has been left out. There have been some new bits that aren't in the book which are very well done, but its too rushed. Surely six episodes isn't enough. We have to wade through eight episodes of American dramas, but only six for this seems too short.

I am particularly enjoying River in this series, and Ho, I think the script-writers have done an excellent job.

I don't know the books but I do tend to think six eps doesn't feel like enough.

IWantedThereThereButItsGone · 07/10/2024 14:58

Yes, Ho is better on TV because we don’t hear his internal monologue - which is woefully disparaging to the character in the books. His characterisation by the novelist has been questioned, iirc.

But yes, this is a mad dash through the story which - no spoilers - really doesn’t prepare one for the end. (If it’s anything like the book.)

This is my favourite thing on tv. The plots are sophisticated and gripping and it’s shot very well. But beyond the effectiveness of the suspense built, it’s the writing, and delivery of that by the actors that really makes it. So funny. Especially from Lamb, Ho and increasingly River too.

monicagellerbing · 07/10/2024 17:52

I've loved series 1 and 2 but 3 has been a bit of a let down. Not much suspense, found the characters quite confusing and not much character development for the new interesting slow horse character

We’re on season 4?

theemptinessmachine · 08/10/2024 08:54

I prefer to binge but just couldn't wait so watching it weekly. I still see Daniel from Corrie every time I see River though. I need more episodes of this show!

LightandBreezy · 09/10/2024 15:11

I've thoroughly enjoyed this series - I've watched ep 6 and it does indeed pack a lot in. Looking forward to seeing how the characters continue to develop in s5.

Oh goodness - is it honestly Wednesday again? I hadn’t properly noticed.

And I’ve just sat down with some tea and chocolate biscuits … 😈

Yes 😱

Last episode too!
I know I said upthread I wasn't loving it, but obviously I'll miss it.

Oh my … The last ten minutes or so ..

David. And Lamb.

Wonderful.

Jonathan Pryce really, really deserves all the prizes. How did he know exactly how to portray dementia? I’ve never seen it so extraordinarily true to life. Tiny moments of wrenching out my heart.

He's an ambassador for The Alzheimer Society and has talked about his first hand experience of the impact dementia has on families (his aunt I believe).
He's a brilliant actor but I did feel he must have had some personal experiences to portray it so well.
My mum had dementia for the last few years of her life. I could have howled with grief at the final scenes.

IWantedThereThereButItsGone · 09/10/2024 20:51

Oh wow - that’s fascinating to hear. So he really does know! Those flashes of sly cunning, and then lucidity, and anger at being treated like a child … Expertise and fear and pride and aggression when you can’t grasp that someone who loves you is trying to help you. And forgetting there are things you can no longer do …

It was a masterclass.

Wow. What an episode.

The only jarring thing for me in this series has been the Harkness character. I know he's a messianic bombastic arsehole, but it's the accent. Hugo Weaving is a very good actor but somehow this didn't work for me. Never mind. He wasn't terrible and everyone else was amazing.

IWantedThereThereButItsGone · 09/10/2024 22:27

I felt Marcus was more affecting in the book.

And the final confrontation between father and son was more terrifying and exciting in the original iteration.

wildfellhall · 09/10/2024 23:09

😩😩😩😩

wildfellhall · 09/10/2024 23:14

I cried quite a lot.

LOVED this series.

But I am a bit 💔.

Hio being terrified was hilarious.

Coe - what a scene stealer.

I had a really scary nightmare the other night and I realised it was based on the French terminator guy and I killed him with a big book.

FrogsLoveRain · 10/10/2024 08:06

I've binge watched over the last couple of days. Staying up too late and now pretty tired. But so worth it. Series 4 was brilliant 👏

Trebolle · 10/10/2024 08:13

I think this was the worse series out of the 4. I love love love Gary and Jack in it but needed more somehow. Especially the last episode.

It's still the best thing on tv but I hope it doesn't start to dwindle.

wildfellhall · 10/10/2024 08:15

I've just realised that Marcus was Anthony the hairdresser "The Reference!" in Fleabag and I love him even more now

I agree. I couldn't get a feel for his character at all. I didn't even get messianic, TBH; just wasn't sure how much he was a merciless mercenary gun for hire and how much he was meant to be plain evil, or why he did what he did.
Also, the thing about River's parents – a bit much to throw into one season, I think, and it didn't have much impact, for me anyway.

No way! I didn't recognise him at all!!

MarkWithaC · 10/10/2024 10:25

I did love the fumbling about trying to get things out of the desk drawer. 'Jiggle it to the left!' Grin
