Two episodes in and it's brilliant. Hasn't been anything this good on Netflix since Ripley

I agree with the love for Jeff Goldblum and Nabhaan Rizwan, but it's Ramon Tikaram I could watch all day. Wow.

For some reason, it's reminding me of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet. Oversaturated sunshine, opulence and graffiti.

Have just looked him up. He was at my university but as he’s aged he looks so much more like Tanita.

No accident. Note that poster also deliberately misgendered Elliott Page. Some people just have to throw their GC credentials into every discussion.

Maybe I don’t feel the need to join in the pretence that either are actually men? I feel desperately sad for both of them, but I won’t pretend either are men.

I couldn't get into this at all unfortunately

Nor me. So slow

CoughedBullldozerNumber · 30/09/2024 23:10

Thanks @BehindTheSequinsandStilettos - that's helpful.

Worldgonecrazy · 01/10/2024 07:07

I gave this some further thought, as there are parts of the show I enjoyed, being a lover of the Hellenic culture. There are some great actors in the show, and there are others who were cast only because of their image/lifestyle who have zero acting ability. I think it’s the stark contrast that is jarring.

KateMiskin · 01/10/2024 07:12

I loved Misia Butler's performance. Such an expressive face. Orpheus not so much.

Known in our house as Orpheus if the Wandering Accent!

Could you go off and gender critical somewhere else? You've got two entire forums devoted to this stuff.

You don't need to feel "desperately sad" for two incredibly successful actors who are living their best life. You are so damn patronising to trans men.

What exactly did you like or dislike about the actual topic at hand?

The scene where they are sitting on the bench is amazing - he looks both strong and vulnerable. I do hope we get a second season. I've always thought Orpheus is a dick, and this adaptation is no exception.

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 01/10/2024 22:59

Well, blow me. I didn't know Misia was trans irl. I understood the plot point in Kaos but thought the character was being played by AMAB. They do have passing privilege. I hadn't clocked it at all. I liked the character and the acting.
Elliott in the most recent Umbrella Academy has a much deeper voice/more masculine in their movements now but their eyes are still the give-away.
I like both actors and agree that their trans status, and Izzard's - who was brilliant in this - has nowt to do with this thread. Peace and love x

grumpypedestrian · 02/10/2024 11:04

I am 100% here for more Izzard/Goldblum scenes, they were fantastic.

AbsolutelyFemale · 11/10/2024 23:24

Couldn't get into it myself sadly as was excited initially. Seemed badly written and trite, but lots of shows do nowadays. And don't get me started on modern fiction.....

duc748 · 11/10/2024 23:24

I'm just starting the finale, and I've thoroughly enjoyed it, loads of fun. And considering that the story-arc for S2 was already clear two-thirds the way through, I'm sure they're not impressed about being dropped. But I guess Jeff Goldblum doesn't come cheap.

KateMiskin · 12/10/2024 00:08

So sad it was cancelled. I really wanted to see Hera's revenge.

DadJoke · 12/10/2024 00:39

Noooo! I was looking forward to season 2. I guess Orpheus looked round after all.

ReadWithScepticism · 12/10/2024 06:18

I'm not sad it was cancelled. I enjoyed it a lot, but I think that 95% of my enjoyment was simply the brilliant charismatic performances of Jeff Goldblum and Nabhaan Rizwan (and a couple of other cast members - Hera, Poseidon, Charon) so I will just seek them out elsewhere.

The story itself, other than the strong basic premise of using a couple of staples from Greek mythology, became cheesy and contrived fantasy genre stuff once we got into the underworld. And it was annoying how conspicuously they weaved in the second-series hooks at the end. Perhaps the hubris of that, and the nemesis that followed, was another deliberate echoing of ancient Greek narrativesGrin

Also, how flipping wet was Orpheus? A nasty stalker who wouldn't even leave his disenchanted girlfriend alone after she died, but with a malignity so lacking in backbone that literally all he had to do to complete his brave intrusion into the underworld was refuse a drink of water. And she was little better -- dripping about without the resolve to leave her annoying partner but then somehow, implausibly, gripped with enough passion ( in an underworld that we were specifically informed had no other physical appetites than those that its residents wistfully clutched at for the purposes of nostalgia) to jump into bed with Caeneus for literally no reason other than that the scriptwriters had told her to.

Gutted.
To the extent I signed a petition Blush
I thought its ratings were good.
I'm not anti Harry/Megs but surely, if they've let them go/do let them go, they can use the saved $ on this instead! Wink Grin
I don't understand how Netflix works as a business. Lots of series I thought had "legs" don't get recommissioned.

The story-arc for S2 was already clear two-thirds the way through
Was it? Gosh, I'm thick.
What do we think it would have been so I can imagine it in my head and all will be well! Smile

Walkinginthesand · 12/10/2024 14:07

Very disappointing news. Was hoping for the Theseus - Ariadne - Dionysus story.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 12/10/2024 16:00

Aw man!

Damn it, I was already getting told off by DH and DS1 for wanting Hera to triumph ("are you crazy? she's a monster, they're all monsters! how can you want her to win?") I was looking forward to Janet McTeer basically owning the place. She's just sensational in that role.

The costumes were wonderful, the choice of music was cracking, and so many exceptional people involved. Orpheus was what Orpheus often is - a needy clingy pain in the arse. (I find him like that in Hadestown too). I liked brisk, no nonsense Persephone and weary Charon - Ramon Tikaram has aged beautifully, hasn't he?

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 12/10/2024 17:20

Yes, Ramon was a fine Wine
