Two episodes in and it's brilliant. Hasn't been anything this good on Netflix since Ripley

Conniethecatapillar · 02/09/2024 21:25

I'm now annoyed that I watched it too quickly 😅

xsquared · 02/09/2024 22:16

I think I've watched it too quickly too and probably need a second viewing.

First thoughts: I quite like the style even though it's nicked from Baz Lurhmann's Romeo and Juliet.

I know that Orpheus doesn't get Eurydice back in the original Greek myth, but I didn't think there was any chemistry between the actors playing Caneus and Riddy. It just felt like a convenient way for Orpheus to lose her. Having said that, I am interested in what happens with Caneus and the dead in The Nothing when series 2 comes out.

The best thing about the show were Dionysius and Dennis. 🐈‍⬛️ Dionysius suddenly became even more attractive after adopting him!

Thereisnomagicwand · 02/09/2024 22:40

Brilliant series! Best thing I’ve watched this year. Amazing cinematography and excellent acting. CAN.NOT wait for series 2 🤞 If there is another series, Netflix needs to throw money at it and bring in Zeus’ children to soup up the action.

Yes, I agree. The lack of chemistry is partly because Riddy is such an incredibly flat and passive woman. Too flat and passive, even in life, to have been able to tell drippy Orpheus to fuck off back to mummy. And then, in death, drifting about in a state of bland confusion, but somehow able to be seized with passion despite the fact that (as the series makes clear) there is only minimal-to-zero sensory experience in the afterlife

EasyComfortDishes · 02/09/2024 23:02

It reminded me a lot of Preacher, on Amazon Prime. Worth a go if you enjoyed this.

MonkeyTennis34 · 05/09/2024 12:02

Loving this.
The amazing British actors that keep appearing!

Tapping into my knowledge of Greek mythology, learnt about 20 years ago but some of it's still there!!

Quirky, inventive and gorgeous to look at.

ProvincialLady2024 · 06/09/2024 18:35

Love this. It tests my knowledge and stretches my imagination.

Ariadne and The Furies!

pointythings · 06/09/2024 19:48

Just finished it. I really hope it gets a next season, it's one of the best things I've seen on TV in quite a few years.

partystress · 07/09/2024 22:48

@pointythings 100% agree. Every sub-plot was gripping. The settings were stunning. The use of black and white was so effective. And the casting was superb. Please let there be another series. It is so well poised for us to see new dimensions to Dionysus and whether he can mature, and learn what Ari does next.

partystress · 07/09/2024 22:49

And I loved the music too!

Agree so hard, what a soundtrack and of course celestis, divinitus, insania, vero...

Summerhillsquare · 07/09/2024 23:05

Cathy Tyson as a Fury, in fact the whole representation of the furious as a feminist biker gang, was brilliant.

Stressybetty · 08/09/2024 00:44

Wasn't fussed but getting into it by the end of the 2nd episode. Loved Riddy's floaty dress in the underworld. DH spent most of the first one episode refreshing his knowledge of greek myths and telling me off for not knowing anything 🙄

Howisittheendofsummer24 · 08/09/2024 23:35

So much fun except for that ending which was far too "hey season 2 is coming". Come on, round off Season 1 before trailing the next.

xsquared · 09/09/2024 00:04

I'm on episode 2 of a rematch with dh, and through Googling to see whether Kaos was intentionally plagiarising influenced by Baz Lurhmann's Romeo and Juliet, I found that the actress playing Eurydice is the daughter of the actor who played Mercutio. How cool is that?

Sunraysunday · 09/09/2024 00:07

Just finished it, thought it was amazing! Ages since something has gripped me like this!

Yes I also thought it was channelling the visual style of Luhrman's Romeo and Juliet.

Another series would be fab!

AuntieMarys · 09/09/2024 13:53

Loving it. 2 episodes left. It's so clever. Stephen Dillane is terrific...a far cry from Stannis Baratheon.
Poor old Hades....

Yes!!!

grumpypedestrian · 09/09/2024 15:55

Nearly finished it and loving it. The guiding the passage of souls feels very His Dark Materials which is no bad thing.

JanglingJack · 10/09/2024 16:48

I'd love to watch it with my 15 year old. Not fussed about violence, gore or language but she can't stand watching sex scenes with me, so how graphic is the sodomy and cunnilingus? Obviously I'm not think porn hub. Am I? 🤣

partystress · 10/09/2024 17:04

@JanglingJack no body parts visible. There is no doubting what’s happening, but it’s not graphic. I’d have been happy to watch with mine at 15.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 11/09/2024 16:45

Absolutely love it so far, except for Izzard.

His false breasts are about a HH and look ludicrous in that blouse - if they were real he’d fall flat in his face with the sheer weight of them. It’s too ridiculous in an already over the top world.

Dillane is wonderful, McTeer is clearly having the time of her life.

grumpypedestrian · 11/09/2024 16:50

I loved Izzard in this, especially when they were in scenes with Goldblum. Just hoping this isn’t another great Netflix series that doesn’t get a second series, need more Goldblum as Zeus.

KateMiskin · 11/09/2024 16:51

I mostly adored it. So clever and camp. Jeff Goldblum and Janet McTeer were fabulous, but I also thought Nabhaan Rizwan was perfect as Dionysius. Misia Butler also has an incredibly expressive face.
Did not like whiny Orpheus and Riddy.

Loved the script. Hera had the best lines " Bring a sandwich because I am not catering". 😂

Poor Dennis. Found that scene hard to watch.

Can't wait for S2 with more gods. Likely Ares and Athena.
