Two episodes in and it's brilliant. Hasn't been anything this good on Netflix since Ripley

Apparently, the mood board was very heavily influenced by Romeo and Juliet and heavily by Mercutio and it was only half way through filming they found out from the actress playing Riddy that Harold Perinneau who played Mercutio was her dad!

Please tell me where you got this information from. I loved the series and am reading everything about it that I can find.

Always remember Harold Perrineau from Oz. What a show that was.

I was lookng forward to.this until I saw Izzard in it playing a Fate.

Eddie is great at these roles though and was fantastic. All the fates were!

Worldgonecrazy · 18/09/2024 20:55

I enjoyed parts of it, but some of it was very tiresome and ‘for ed’.

The actor who plays Canaeus seems very sad, her comments about Ellen page made me wonder if there is a similar sad backstory.

I also can’t separate Eddie Izzard the actor from his public behaviour. He just makes me nauseous.

Loved the Amazons, the Furies, and Billy Piper. Orpheus is so whiny, cMedusa is awesome but why didn’t Orpheus turn to stone?

Goldblum seemed to be reprising his role from Thor: Ragnarok.

I also loved the cold cruelty of the Gods, exactly how I have always imagined them to be in the myths.

Was her snake hair hidden in her turban in scenes with Orpheus?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/09/2024 21:00

Jeff goldblaum is very appealing

Yes but in the myths it was her state that did the damage, not her hair. Medusa said the reason that Pru hadn’t turned to stone was that she was already dead.

xsquared · 18/09/2024 21:09

Pru also flinched and asked why she didn't turn to stone just after she was shown a snake hair though.

No33 · 18/09/2024 21:10

I enjoyed it - ISH, but I had to distance from the greek god/goddess side. I just couldn't buy into it fully.

I just didn't find them the sexy mayhem creators they are in my head!

Only Hera embodied the complete crazy, sexy persona for me.

But then, I probably can't have a whole show full of people I find sexual and crazy haha but that's how they are to me!

Finding out it relied heavily on Romeo and Juliet doesn't surprise me. I can see that now it's pointed out. But I don't think it worked. I ADORE Baz Luhrmann's R&J. The campness worked in that, I think it missed the mark in Kaos.

Hoping for retribution in the very clearly implied series 2!

gegs73 · 25/09/2024 10:50

I’ve just finished it and really enjoyed it. It’s really weird though and looks and seems to be acted differently from anything else I’ve seen. I pushed myself to get through the first couple of episodes but once I accepted how it was, it’s kind of brilliant.

CornedBeef451 · 25/09/2024 11:20

We're on the third episode but I'm not loving it.

I didn't realise Eddie Izzard was in it until he appeared and I was instantly enraged by his enormous fake boobs.

Not sure I'll persevere but DH seems to like it.

Sunflowers098 · 26/09/2024 23:05

I really liked this, but I think you need to know your Greek mythology to appreciate it!
DH knows zilch about Zeus and co and all the myths so just found it weird boring and unfathomable.
Personally, can't wait for series 2!

duc748 · 27/09/2024 00:46

I've only skimmed through this thread, and only got round to dipping in tonight. Certainly a cracking first ep, drawing you in.

There are a lot of one liners which a knowledge of Greek myths helps to appreciate like when Persephone tells Hades she saw Orpheus when she last visited her mother. I probably missed some as well.

Liked it.

It had the vibe of Shakepeare set in the 21st century and I think an appreciation of Greek mythology would help as pp have mentiioned. It is the sort of thing BBC may have produced in yesteryear when it wasn't outgunned by Netflix.

Roystonv · 27/09/2024 07:15

Felt guilty/uneducated that I couldn't identify/remember the part each god played originally iyswim and tie that in with the series. Should I just watch it as though brand new?

Stressybetty · 27/09/2024 08:26

Finished this last night, took a few episodes to get into but loved it by the end! Seen that Netflix haven't approved a season 2 yet!

I think it can be enjoyed without any knowledge of Greek myths. Parts of it are unrecognisable from the accepted versions but myth is very fluid and I like the idea of a 21st century version.

Asking for advice for how to deal with this - does anyone already on the thread have a Neurodiverse DC?

DC is 15 and has an obsessive level of knowledge about Greek myth so definitely wanted to watch Kaos. Has been fine with the various bits of violence, death and more adult themes throughout most of the series.

+++ spoiler alert+++

Last night we watched Episode 8, and when Zeus killed the kitten (offscreen but with no doubt that is what happened) DC totally lost the ability to cope and got hugely upset and angry. It took a long time to regain calm before sleep was even something to try for.

Trying to work out how/whether to talk about this. My theory is that we are generally so innured to violence and murder and even rape in TV shows that Zeus, although clearly Not A Nice Person, was still to some extent a sympathetic character. The script writers had him kill the kitten to demonstrate that he is utterly evil.

I have been focusing on the fact that no real animal was hurt, that the kitten was an actor and a very good actor and is healthy and happy and unharmed. But that doesn't help with the anger at such an awful act being portrayed.

I don't know whether to try to talk about it more and help DC to cope with the tragedy. I watched the 2nd half of the epidose solo and it's very good. I certainly want to watch season 2 which is rumoured to be about to be confirmed. Not sure whether to try to get DC to forgive them or to just leave it.

It was pretty convincing even though it wasn't "seen".
I'm sure if your NC child has knowledge of Greek Mythology they'll already know how petulant, capricious, brutal and vengeful the Gods could be - using humans as their dispensable playthings and punishing anyone deemed unworthy/arrogant.
In some stories and adaptations, themes are toned down but in others we see how cruel/unjust/wicked the Gods are. The treatment of Medusa is a case in point (as an aside, your child should read Carol Ann Duffy's Medusa poem) the fair maiden is raped by Poseidon but she gets punished by Athena - the ultimate in victim-blaming and why some rape victims have Medusa tattoos.
The Timeless Myth of Medusa, a Rape Victim Turned Into a Monster (vice.com)
I digress. Whilst Dennis the cat being slaughtered is a plot point to show how Zeus is cruel and unyielding and lacks humanity despite being born human, he wasn't meant to be sympathetic (Jeff Goldblum has the rizz which is why we like him) - he was always a spoiled bully. Killing Dennis makes him the villain.

However...as many have commented on, Prometheus in the first episode says that Zeus was able to bring his dog back to life with the power of his love. Therefore, theoretically, there's a remote chance that Dionysus could do the same. Others have mused that Dennis's murder will bring about Hecate's wrath.

I'd offer your child the chance to see the second part of the final episode (past Dennis's death) once they have got over the shock of it.
Also, do let them know that Dennis was played by not one but SIX kittens! Grin
For continuity purposes, they had six feline actors (play them the video in the linked article). Good luck! Shamrock

Canaeus is played by a man, not a woman - I guess you were misgendering accidentally. There is a great interview with him here.

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 30/09/2024 20:51

P.S. If the anger is at Zeus being portrayed in such a way - remind them that (also off screen) he killed his own baby Shock He was always a Bad Guy.
Explain how we were built up as audience members to empathise with Dionysus and fall in love with Dennis ourselves, making his death more shocking and poignant (in story terms we need a climax. Dennis was that).
If the anger is at a kitten being killed - remind them that in Greek mythology animals were often sacrificed in rituals to the Gods; humans sacrificed pigs, goats and castrated male cows - the difference being these animals were meant to be willing. Dennis was a victim/was being used as a lesson - this is meant to make us turn against Zeus. If your child now hates Zeus, then the pivotal plot point has been effective, and he is siding with Dionysus (Or Hecate) ready for season 2.

No accident. Note that poster also deliberately misgendered Elliott Page. Some people just have to throw their GC credentials into every discussion.
