Two episodes in and it's brilliant. Hasn't been anything this good on Netflix since Ripley

Binged it. Loved it. Loved all the characters/actors

Absolutely love Jeff Goldblum, think he's a great actor but after about 20 mins bowed out, it was just too cheesy.

Think his tremendous talent is really wasted on this shite.

Edited

I thought I'd give it another go but half way through episode 2 I gave up. It was so slow and I was bored.

Yuja · 31/08/2024 19:18

5 episodes in - absolutely loving it

Teabag37 · 31/08/2024 20:10

Jeff Goldblum lives just around the corner from me ! (Florence)

LunaNorth · 31/08/2024 20:19

I’ve adored the first two episodes, and I adore Jeff Goldblum. I’ve loved him since The Tall Guy.

(I’m going to Florence in October. If I give you my watch could you sort me out with an address..?)

MrsLargeEmbodied · 31/08/2024 20:37

have to give this a try

So I just woke up from a nap (pregnant, so tired😳) and my nearly 6 yo was halfway through the second episode of this. He didn't seem bothered or disturbed by it, would he have seen anything bad in those first two episodes? He's never once chosen our profile on Netflix to watch, he always just goes straight to kids.

When I was 5 years old (or possibly 4) I crept around the back of the sofa one night while my parents were watching Robocop and was only discovered when my dad reached for his beer can and got a fistful of my ponytail. I'd already seen the worst bits and continued to have a very "innocent" unscathed childhood in which I was in no way traumatised - I'm sure your daughter will be fine 😊

DutchCowgirl · 31/08/2024 21:40

Just started this with my 14y old. He’s really into Greek mythology and tells me all the stories and what they modernised about it … I liked it a lot!

Conniethecatapillar · 31/08/2024 23:03

I'm really enjoying it too.

ReadWithScepticism · 31/08/2024 23:23

Loved the first few episodes, but having watched it all now (don't worry, no spoilers) I felt that ultimately it was pretty much tosh. You think to begin with that because it has the Greek gods there will be massive stunning epic tales, but it all just descends into fantasy genre twaddle.
Absolutely loved Zeus and Dionysus, though. And I thought Hera and Poseidon were good too, The humans, not so much. Apart from Ari.

RogueFemale · 01/09/2024 00:06

I'm really enjoying it, have only watched three episodes so far. Lots to love. It's clever, subtly satirical, and I even liked Billie Piper as Cassandra and I usually hate her.

RogueFemale · 01/09/2024 00:07

The bits with Prometheus chained up on a mountain with an eagle pecking his liver did make me think of Monty Python, though.

RogueFemale · 01/09/2024 00:11

Indiaplain · 30/08/2024 07:53

Would this be suitable to watch with young teens? My DS is 13..

I wouldn't think so.

StormySam · 02/09/2024 11:14

I absolutely loved this. Found some of it really moving (particularly the Caneus story). I thought the script was brilliant and the cast are just fantastic. The ONLY thing that I found frustrating was the ending (no spoilers) which wasn't really an ending as Netflix always does begging for series 2.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 02/09/2024 11:28

I was lookng forward to.this until I saw Izzard in it playing a Fate.

Dont you mean Suzie? 🙄

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 02/09/2024 12:00

I agree with the love for Jeff Goldblum and Nabhaan Rizwan, but it's Ramon Tikaram I could watch all day. Wow.

For some reason, it's reminding me of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet. Oversaturated sunshine, opulence and graffiti.

Conniethecatapillar · 02/09/2024 12:03

I really hope there is a second season although I think it probably won't be as good.

Also two episodes in and completely hooked. Dionysus is indeed easy on the eye and Stephen Dillane is just perfectly cast. Not long back from Malaga and Seville, so enjoying location spotting too!

Ah, I said to my husband, ' Where was this filmed, it looks like Spain'.

Really enjoyed it, Janet McTeer has been my woman-crush since Ozark

I said that to DH - very R+J.

ReadWithScepticism · 02/09/2024 12:15

Oh yes, Ramon Tikaram. Another throbbingly beautiful actor - and one who is closer to being age appropriate for me than Nabhaan Rizwan.Grin

Re the ending, I didn't find it unsatisfying, though it was a little abrupt. All the questions posed were solved. But it is clear they are aiming to run for at least one more series. Lots of deliberate hooks for future storylines. Not sure I would bother with a subsequent series except for the charismatic eye candy provided by a few actors.

Mark Kermode said the same thing in his review on the Kermode/Mayo podcast this week (nicked from the transcript):

Mythological dark comedy television series created by Charlie Cavell, who was the British actor writer, best known for adapting the graphic comic series End of the Effing World. So this sort of does for Greek mythology, what Baz Luhrmann did for Shakespeare in as much as, turns it into something as glossy and eye-catching as an episode of Miami Vice. So it's set in a world in which gods walk among us, and a fairly rancid bunch of gods they are too.”

Haven’t watched it myself yet (it’s on the list) but this statement in the aforementioned podcast sells it to me!

I've watched four of them, so I'm like three and a half hours in, and it is a big sprawling, multi-layered, everyone's in it drama of which there is much to enjoy, not least the fact that I just love Jeff Goldblum, and Jeff Goldblum is being the most Jeff Goldblum he's been in quite a long time as Zeus.”

Callmejudith · 02/09/2024 20:34

Gosh this is so clever we’re loving it

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 02/09/2024 20:54

Except lots of room for new characters, given some of Jeff's children weren't calling him back! Any of Aphrodite, Athena, Apollo, Ares and Hermes could put in an appearance. These were all mentioned in the phone scene.
Demeter and Hephaestus are the other two Olympians.

They are very good in it. All three fates are otherworldly - they all complement each other here.
