Our Flag Means Death: Thread 3. It's still utterly brilliant. We are still obsessed.

Ahoy again mateys! Set sail aboard thread 3 where we still wax lyrical about our favourite show, its cast, its music, fan edits, fan fiction and more 😁(there may also be just a little obsessing over our fabulous leads - pictures extremely welcome)!

If you haven’t yet seen Our Flag Means Death, what are you waiting for? Go watch it (on BBC iPlayer), then come back here and join us. But be warned, some of you may find yourself as hooked as we are 🎣.

You may have heard that this is a comedy about pirates and think it's not for you. But it’s actually a show about self-discovery, healing and found-family with a love story at its heart. The joint leads are both damaged by abusive backgrounds and want what the other has. The show is about their healing and their respective journeys. It’s tender, romantic, funny, emotionally intelligent and utterly refreshing. It subverts genre expectations. There is comedy, absurdity and a good amount of heartbreak and despair - sometimes in the same scene! The acting is outstanding (Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby especially). But the writing, music, costumes, sets, the sheer attention to detail – for a show with only 18 half-hour episodes it is still keeping us talking, two full threads and many re-watches later.

If you think this might appeal, do watch it and come back and talk to us. It would be lovely if more were to join our crew. But it's a show that needs time. The 2nd lead arrives in episode 3, so you need to give it at least 4 episodes as that’s when the tone changes and the main story starts. It still took me several more episodes to fully appreciate what I was watching, but by then I was hooked and had to immediately watch it all over again. If you like Good Omens, What We Do in the Shadows, Ghosts or even Bridgerton, this might be the show for you.

And Stede sees Ed’s back tattoos so there is hope.

I reckon all that's left is the bridal suite.

Hopefully this means she'll update on AO3 soon. I'd much rather read it there in one go, rather than in bits on nutter, so I'm now going to try to ignore and forget what I've just read!

We were talking about Taika and Rita a little while ago. I came across this today and don't remember it being linked before. There's a section in the middle where he talks about her randomly taking him out to a Shrek cabin and surprising him with costumes to film some Shrek and Fiona roleplay 🤣 Definitely seems they're on the same wavelength!

I liked this Wired interview too and thought I would share some more Taika love.

Always here for the Taika love - thank you! As you say they do seem to be very in tune with each other - he says something like 'the great and interesting things in my life happen because of Rita'. Interesting (to me anyway) fact - the Shrek air bnb is on the estate where Monarch of the Glen was filmed - we drive past every summer.

The Wired thing is great too, thank you. I love his energy and humour. He’s so self deprecating and funny – ‘Who is TW? Ask my therapist, that’s what we’re trying to find out’, the comments about the Oscar and the Grammy, and ‘my range is me’, when we all know from seeing him as Ed that his emotional range is incredible. I like 'I'm very nice', where for a minute his expression is just like Viago in WWDITS. And the touch of arrogance about all his films being hits - I wonder whether this was before Love and Thunder? Even that though is refreshing when interviewees with his level of success can come across with what seems like false modesty. He’s such a mix of throwaway quips here and then serious in other interviews, but I’m not sure he can really be as lazy as he presents himself, or that he genuinely forgets the names of his characters.

He must work incredibly hard. Fair play. He is also so gorgeous it’s unreal. I have such a massive crush - I haven’t had this since Kevin Costner in prince of thieves in the 90s. 😂 I feel unhinged!

This is something that strikes me too. We know he has a million projects on the go and never seems to stop working. But he often describes himself as a really lazy actor. It can't be laziness - probably more like an ability to dismiss what he doesn't see as important and spend his energy on only the things he sees as worthwhile. I can understand why, once he read that we don't know for sure very much about BB, Taika's response was "right then, I can do my own thing" and so he spent his time instead working out what his own thing might be. So if that's the case, why bother 'wasting' an hour or so reading Wiki? I can see his point!

He really is, isn't he 🥰. Here he is being mesmerising (although I do think I prefer him with a bit of facial hair)...

@BillStickersIsInnocent Taika is cute in real life, but as Season 2 Ed, he makes me want to howl at the Moon. It should be illegal to be that hot. There’s a thread on Reddit in which a ‘person’ (not sure of gender) says they have been asexual all of their life until seeing Taika in Season 2. Like, he literally helped someone discover sexual awareness and feeling 🤣.

So, Rita proposed to Taika, eh? I love that they had a conversation about taking it slow and Rita was like ‘Nah, we’re not doing that’. I want Stede to channel Rita’s reply in 2.5. ‘Can we take it slow?’ / ‘No, Ed we can’t. Now take your rice-sack off.’

I love that Taika referenced ‘Back to the Future’ as one of his favourite movies. It’s my favourite movie. It’s perfectly plotted, lots of mirroring, no wasted scenes, everything has meaning… 🤔

@MrsJellybee I thought my crush was ‘just’ series 2 Ed but it seems to have grown. Even the met gala sofa look doesn’t put me off now.
