The off screen noises. So horrifying and heartbreaking.

My sense was that she sort of suspected or knew, but seeing Alyn in person drove it home for her in a very sad way. That's only conjecture though.

BorgQueen · 09/07/2024 12:28

Aemond won’t be best pleased

KillingMeDeftIy · 09/07/2024 13:36

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/07/2024 22:21

And!

She was the only witness to Aemond's murder of Aegon

But I think she was trying to punish him and got full of bravado

I’m not entirely sure he managed to murder him! We’ll find out next week, I guess.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 09/07/2024 14:16

Yes I think you might be right @KillingMeDeftIy

Criston appeared not to realise Aemond had done it and not Rhaenys and Melys due to all the fire and smoke. That will be the story at Kings Landing that it was Rhaenys and Aemond will get away with it. That's what I think anyway.

I think that Ser Criston knew what was up when he saw Aemond stalking towards Aegon's body with his sword out and then hastily sheathing it when Cole came up behind him.

WinterIsComingKnitFaster · 09/07/2024 19:02

My favourite non combat bit was Aegon struggling with his GCSE Valarian in the council meeting. Bless him, he's not really cut out for the job.

That and Alicent explaining to the Maester that she needed the Morning After tea "for a friend".

Trixiefirecracker · 09/07/2024 19:46

LobeliaBaggins · 09/07/2024 10:33

Sorry, but this is really not a spoiler. given her fall.

…its not clear if Aegon is dead and he fell so wasn’t sure if she was either but now I definitely know!

Elsbetka · 09/07/2024 21:34

Yes @LoobyDoop2, he did look like a Stark! I guess he'd be related to them via Catelyn Tully.

I think my main problem with HotD is that I feel like we're constantly waiting for the action to shift to somewhere really different, like Dorne or a Highgarden type setting, or even the Wall (I think that's why the Cregan Stark scenes were so disappointing). It never happens though - it's just constant gloom at Dragonstone and door-slamming at Kings Landing. At least Harrenhal and the Rook's Rest battle are a change of scene!

meimei80 · 09/07/2024 21:47

A real snoozefest so far. Not a single likable or interesting character to root for and hard to remember who everyone is, really.

meimei80 · 09/07/2024 21:55

It's coming across more like a play than a TV series. Which would be fine if you wanted to go watch a play.

Buffypaws · 09/07/2024 22:27

I will also miss Rhaenys and Meleys.
loved Aegon’s shit Valyrian. Reminded me of cersei telling Jaime “father always said you were the stupidest Lannister”.
I quite enjoyed the dryness of the book. It’s a history book. But I can see how you need to like that sort kid thing and really be interested. I have also forgotten most of the details but I remember vaguely what happens now. Hopefully it is a bit more actiony here on in.

MayIDestroyYou · 10/07/2024 04:48

Well - that was a thrilling fairground ride!

You’ve all said everything I would want to say, better than I could say it - GCSE Valyrian and Morning After Tea in particular. Grin

I’m not exactly bored with Daemon stuck out on his own, hallucinating in a swampy castle, but it’s frustrating not to have him in the thick of the action. Though I guess that leaves space for Aemond to bestride the universe. (I need to go back and rewatch or maybe read his claiming of Vhagar. Presumably her belonging to Laena Targaryen previously is part of the book as well as the TV series?)

My only real complaint might be that I can’t fathom Alicent. She seems to be in a different show, lit differently, preternaturally youthful and colourful - I dunno …

TinselAngel · 10/07/2024 10:59

Raenys and Aegon looked pretty dead to me.

I think you're right - the limited range of locations definitely makes it feel more play-like for me.

On the plus side, Vikings Valhalla is returning tmrw with a new season and hopefully considerably fewer people whose names contain ae (Saxons notwithstanding 😁).

Does anyone else have any other similar recs, actually? i loved the Last Kingdom too, and put that on the same level as GoT and Vikings, but haven't really.fohnd anything else to match up. Obvs I hate-watch The Rings Of Power, just for the silliness 😄 also quite enjoyed The Witcher, but that's also very silly.

MayIDestroyYou · 10/07/2024 11:15

The Last Kingdom on the same level as GOT???

Truly?

I haven’t seen it as had no expectations at all. Can you promise it would be worth the time and emotional investment? Grin

TinselAngel · 10/07/2024 11:19

I enjoyed Wheel of Time on Amazon.

It definitely is.

It’s very good yes, and you’ll get to see Aemond make an appearance as well!

MayIDestroyYou · 10/07/2024 12:14

Thanks! Added to my Netflix list.

LoobyDoop2 · 10/07/2024 13:34

I wouldn’t put anything on a par with GoT, but the Last Kingdom is really good, definitely worth watching.

Elsbetka · 10/07/2024 15:06

I loved it The Last Kingdom, @MayIDestroyYou! Have you watched Vikings? Also great.

(To be perfectly honest I didn't watch every last episode of GoT as I'd read all the books and was one of those people that had Thoughts on the casting etc...so maybe my appreciation of GoT is not quite the highest it could be, BUT I did love it for its scope and drama.)

I hate-watched The Wheel of Time too, @TinselAngel 😂 I did like some aspects of it though.

TinselAngel · 10/07/2024 16:45

I haven't read the Wheel of Time books, which probably aided my enjoyment of the TV series.

Shadow and Bone? Also enjoyed Westworld, not remotely the same but good!

Raenys and Aegon looked pretty dead to me.

Then why was he going to have to finish him off with his sword if he was definitely dead?

MayIDestroyYou · 10/07/2024 17:21

Westwood was too depressing! Watched a lot but had to give it up in the end. There just seemed to be a complete absence of hope.
