The off screen noises. So horrifying and heartbreaking.

Anyone notice the Sesame Street names for the Tullys? Grover and Oscar

It was done deliberately wasn't it? I'm sure there's an Elmo in the book!

LoobyDoop2 · 08/07/2024 22:12

I don’t understand why Rhaenys went back in- surely once she’d seen Aegon go down she could have withdrawn?

Lovewine1975 · 08/07/2024 22:18

@LoobyDoop2 I thought that, I was shouting at the screen to turnaround and go

Lovewine1975 · 08/07/2024 22:20

What an episode apart the Daemon bit which was a bit boring the rest of it was brilliant, the dragons fighting was epic!

For anyone who’s watched the Last Kingdom, I’ve just realised that Aemond is Osferth!! What a transformation for that actor.

Oh my God, how had I not noticed that??!! Thank you!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/07/2024 22:21

And!

She was the only witness to Aemond's murder of Aegon

But I think she was trying to punish him and got full of bravado

Elsbetka · 08/07/2024 22:29

I really want to like it more than I do, but compared to GoT it's such a smaller-scale story - there just aren't enough interesting branching storylines for me. I feel like we just have the Blacks vs the Greens, and there's sort of nothing really unknown, if you see what I mean. Even though I'd read all the ASOIAF books, it still felt as though there were revelations in the TV series, as it were - more threads to pull on in he source material, maybe.

My more specific (completely unasked for) hot takes so far:

  • Larys, Helaena and Ser Simon Strong are well cast
  • Matt Smith is mystifyingly miscast (I know this won't be popular!!)
  • Eve Best was one of the most watchable Blacks
  • the dragons are too wormy for me (I KNOW)
  • lots of fairly dull interchangeable brown-haired youths in their early 20s - Cregon Stark was disappointing, Jaecerys is a bit bleurgh too, Bracken/Blackwoods all look the same!
  • Rhaenyra's small council don't seem very credible but maybe that's the presence of Phil Daniels and James Dreyfus
  • where has Otto Hightower gone?!
  • some of the Targaryen wigs are truly dreadful
EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/07/2024 22:39

Thinking about it, could it be she turned back because she realised Aemond was the true threat?

I absolutely love Matt Smith and don't think he's miscast at all!

It might be because I can only see Prince Philip, rather than Prince Daemon 😁

Aemond is a bastard, but he is so watchable!

Very sad about the dragons and Rhaenys.

I still wish there was a bit more humour, but this I am really enjoying this series. I do lose track still of who's who, especially as I didn't rewatch series one, so don't remember some of what happened.

This is a bit of a spoiler!!! ☹️

Definitely agree with this!

Well her and all the ground troops including Ser Criston.

Were you thinking she could have survived that fall?

Yirk · 09/07/2024 07:37

Love Matt Smith in this, oh the dragon fight was emotional!

Well her and all the ground troops including Ser Criston.

Criston appeared not to realise Aemond had done it and not Rhaenys and Melys due to all the fire and smoke. That will be the story at Kings Landing that it was Rhaenys and Aemond will get away with it. That's what I think anyway.

LoobyDoop2 · 09/07/2024 09:32

It’s turning out that Danaerys is the only one to be fireproof, isn’t it. Wonder why that is.

I’m going to miss Rhaenys, she was by far the most interesting character. I’d like to see more of the other Houses, though, and some Dornish action. Also, did anyone else notice how much the young Tully lord looked like Rickon Stark? And Robb, thinking about it.

She wasnt burned though, so she was fire proof

Question to the book readers - I tried to read it but it was too dry and dull. Is there a point it picks up and gets more interesting

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 09/07/2024 09:56

The book was a bit of a slog it's true @ThistleWitch and I remember next to nothing of it because there was so much to retain! I genuinely don't remember much at all so my post about Aemond is purely speculative

LobeliaBaggins · 09/07/2024 10:29

The book is pretty dry with way too many hazy recollections and "Mushroom said".

Eve Best had interesting things to say about Rhaenys's motives. 'House of the Dragon': Rhaenys Dies, Eve Best Explains Dragon Battle (variety.com) Like so many middle aged women, she was tired and just wantd to let go. That " I am done" expression on her face as she fell. Got tired of cleaning up everybody's messes. I so relate!

Was there a connection between her having had enough and meeting Alyn (thinknthat is his name)? She seemed so sad when she touched his face and said his mother must have been comely.

LobeliaBaggins · 09/07/2024 10:44

This isnt a spoiler, as I didn't get that far in the book, but Alyn seems likely to be Corlys' bastard son, from an affair he had at sea.

Men! They are all so disappointing.

Yes, I think that was made clear last night. I felt so sad for her and wondered if she had only just discovered it or had known all along.
