Discovering a series years after!

Has anyone been late, as in very late, to the party with a series? Something it turns out was a phenomenon in its time.
I've just discovered Torchwood in the last week! Circa 18 years after it initially aired! I mean I knew it existed, knew it was Dr Who related, but beyond that wasn't hugely interested at the time. I was so busy with life back then, and also didn't have a television for a while (trying to read, craft etc more).
I think the new series of Dr Who kind of put me in the mood for some sci-fi or fantasy, and browsing iPlayer the other day, I came across it.
I was looking for some MN threads on it, and they mostly, if not totally, date back to the noughties! I'm so late to the party. In fact I think everyone's gone home, got changed out of their party clothes and the glasses cleared away - years ago! So, here I am having a party of one! Loving it though.
Anyone else? Telly, films or even literature you've discovered years later?!

I love Series 1 & 2 of Torchwood, but Series 3 (Children of the Earth) was utterly incredible. It's one of the best things I've ever watched ever. It is harrowing and does stay with you, especially if you aren't good with bad things happening to kids, but honestly, it's so worth watching because it's so brilliant.

Series Four (Miracle Day) was bad.

Thank you for this. I've moved onto series 2 now. Absolutely loving it. Feels like it couldn't be topped!
But, loads of the reviews agree with you that series 3 is the best. I'm very nervous about watching it, due to the subject matter. I'll get to the end of the one I'm on now, and see how brave I'm feeling!

the chase, fat friends - kay mellor.

its great seeing well established actors at the earlier part of their careers.

NewName24 · 04/06/2026 15:48

Fat Friends was a brilliant series.

the80sweregreat · 04/06/2026 15:52

For me it was fat friends and life begins.
I don’t have Netflix anymore , but I liked finding old series on there and they are better than new ones tend to be.

Thanks for reminding me Tourchwood is on iPlayer although I did have a few issues with it. Completely ripped the Seven Words of Power from Stephen Donaldsons Chronicles of Thomas Covenant and the alien speaking the words bears no resemblance to any creature in that domain.

Torchwood was fantastic. I'd love a return but probably tricky for various reasons...

Quite a few. Watched Spaced about 20 years after the event. Also The League of Gentlemen.
Mad men, Homeland, the Sopranos, the wire.

This year i am binge watching Supernatural

I’ve enjoyed Moving On but my favourite has to be Mount Pleasant. I must have watched all the series at least 5 times. Bobby Ball is in it and although ido find him funny there were a couple of episodes that had me sobbing. Sally Lyndsey is one of the main characters and I really enjoyed seeing her in this.

If you liked Torchwood try Being Human. Or In The Flesh. It was cancelled on a cliffhanger but still well worth watching.

iZombie is another one that might be up your alley, if you're looking for contemporary sci-fi / fantasy with big emotions and plenty of humour
