Discovering a series years after!

Has anyone been late, as in very late, to the party with a series? Something it turns out was a phenomenon in its time.
I've just discovered Torchwood in the last week! Circa 18 years after it initially aired! I mean I knew it existed, knew it was Dr Who related, but beyond that wasn't hugely interested at the time. I was so busy with life back then, and also didn't have a television for a while (trying to read, craft etc more).
I think the new series of Dr Who kind of put me in the mood for some sci-fi or fantasy, and browsing iPlayer the other day, I came across it.
I was looking for some MN threads on it, and they mostly, if not totally, date back to the noughties! I'm so late to the party. In fact I think everyone's gone home, got changed out of their party clothes and the glasses cleared away - years ago! So, here I am having a party of one! Loving it though.
Anyone else? Telly, films or even literature you've discovered years later?!

The Torchwood series about the children being taken by aliens really affected and upset me and I often think about it now even though it's years since I watched it (when it was first broadcast) - brr! I assume it must be Children of Earth from other posters comments on here.

Eek, sounds scary. I haven't got that far yet. Still a while to go before I get to that one, series 3 I think?
I think because of the recent sunny weather I've been getting through it all very slowly. I spent much of the weekend at the allotment!
Anyway, I can't cope with anything that depicts anything upsetting re children or animals. So maybe I should give that series a miss?
Thank you for the heads up.

A lot of people on this thread have mentioned Sopranos. I've never seen it either. Don't even know what it's about! 🤭
No spoilers please, but what is the genre?

Actually, just googled The Sopranos, and don't think it'd be my cup of tea. I'm a funny one with drama and literature. I mostly like feel-good innocent stuff. Don't like violence at all. But, for some reason when it's sci-fi or fantasy I've got a much higher threshold. So, for example, I couldn't easily watch a scene of trench warfare from world war 1. But, am fine with watching orcs in Lord of the Rings! The fantasy element kind of eclipses the violence! If that makes sense...

I binged The Sopranos long, long after it had finished; ditto Breaking Bad.

magicstar1 · 19/05/2024 17:57

Yes, I binge watched the whole of The West Wing a couple of years ago.
The last older show I found was The Shield and it’s bloody fantastic. I’ve watched the entire series a few times now.

Loved The Shield. As good as The Sopranos.

Blackcats7 · 20/05/2024 11:36

Is The Wire as good as I have read? Tried watching it years ago but the constant swearing in the very first episode put me right off. I like a good fuck as much as the next woman but this was off the scale.

lazymum99 · 20/05/2024 11:39

Just binged all of Fat Friends.
Also watched The Bridge in danish years after it came out.
Found Scott and Bailey on ITVX and binged it

justasking111 · 20/05/2024 12:27

I'm binge watching law and order, that mostly passed me by because of children.

eggplant16 · 20/05/2024 21:09

Detectorists,The name put me off, i thought it was about detecting crime.

Totally brillliant.

5foot5 · 20/05/2024 23:13

Thankweyou · 19/05/2024 17:39

Spooks - brilliant!

Oh yes!

Actually we didn't start watching until late series 5 being aired, but then we caught up by getting all the earlier series on DVD. After that it was must see, edge of the seat stuff and buy every series on DVD as soon as it was available.

By now we have watched most of it several times. Still good.

First time around I thought Adam Carter was the highlight. But I must be more mature now as I am a Harry Pearce fan through and through. 😆😆

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 21/05/2024 00:04

Benidorm. Never heard of it until 6 months ago. Absolutely hilarious 🤣

Shangrilalala · 21/05/2024 00:08

In the last year couple of years , I’ve binged:

This is us
Blue Bloods
Shetland
The Giod Wife/Fight
and have recently finished Professor T

ive now started Greys’s Anatomy - plenty of episodes to get through before I need to find something ‘new’. I can’t believe they all passed me by, first time around!

Willmafrockfit · 21/05/2024 08:24

Was watching This is Us, after ER quite recently.
also recently seen Derry Girls
now catching up with The Young Offenders.
Fat Friends has no subtitles and I cant get my head round the slim one taking part.
I resisted Detectorists for a few years but Loved that

Scintella · 21/05/2024 08:35

I spose everyone’s seen Peepshow. best comedy ever

The slim one is so bloody annoying.

Where are you guys all watching the old school English shows now britbox has ended? I was a few episodes into at home with the Braithwaites 😂 very vaguely remembered I loved it in primary school, and fat friends. I love the older syndicates that Kay Mellor wrote too

I love the shows of that time about regular people in unusual situations. Loved At Home with the Braithwaites and Drop Dead Gorgeous. Shows are all detectives, dead women and ambushes now.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 21/05/2024 08:57

We've just started watching Band of Brothers. I can't believe it passed me by until now, it's excellent!

ITVX shows Britbox stuff. But Fat Friends is on Netflix

Just started watching a series called Bodies on Netflix from about 20 years ago. (No not the recent time travel one with Stephen Graham which has the same name - I saw that too!)

This is a medical drama and it's by Jed Mercurio, the guy who wrote 'Line of Duty'. It's very good, sad and funny too. Stars Max Beesley, also features Keith Allen (Lily's dad), Susan Lynch. Anyway it's only on Netflix until 11 June, so you'd have to be quick.

Over the last couple of years I have stopped watching linear TV and streamed loads of series I appear to missed when they were originally broadcast, as well as rewatching my old favourites, eg Twin Peaks.

Like pps we've recently enjoyed gems like The Sopranos, Brideshead Revisited, , A Very Peculiar Practice, Boys From the Blackstuff (blimey, that's going back! - sad to hear of the recent death of Bernard Hill) etc, etc.

You can Bodies ( Jed Mercurio) on iplayer

Mothership4two · 21/05/2024 09:22

Derry Girls, like others have mentioned, watched it last year. Had seen clips of teenage girls and assumed we wouldn't be the target audience so wouldn't really 'get it'. Brilliant series and well balanced humour with the (obviously) more serious issues of the times.

Umanresources · 21/05/2024 09:51

I just ploughed my way through most of the series of Silent Witness, I still have the last couple of series to go.
I really enjoyed The Brokenwood Mysteries set in New Zealand as well. The Russian autopsy doctor in that is so funny.
I also got through Inspector George Gently as well.

cheapskatemum · 21/05/2024 17:27

Thanks to this thread, I've started watching Clocking Off. I keep exclaiming, "That's him/her from: Corrie, Life on Mars, The A word" etc. They all look so fresh faced!

louderthan · 21/05/2024 17:48

Too many! Seinfeld, Life On Mars, Shameless, Brideshead Revisited, Jewel in the Crown, Buffy, Dr Who, Spaced...

L4815162342 · 21/05/2024 18:09

I love Series 1 & 2 of Torchwood, but Series 3 (Children of the Earth) was utterly incredible. It's one of the best things I've ever watched ever. It is harrowing and does stay with you, especially if you aren't good with bad things happening to kids, but honestly, it's so worth watching because it's so brilliant.

Series Four (Miracle Day) was bad.

Amx · 21/05/2024 18:33

Took me years to work out Torchwood was an anagram Blush
