Discovering a series years after!

Has anyone been late, as in very late, to the party with a series? Something it turns out was a phenomenon in its time.
I've just discovered Torchwood in the last week! Circa 18 years after it initially aired! I mean I knew it existed, knew it was Dr Who related, but beyond that wasn't hugely interested at the time. I was so busy with life back then, and also didn't have a television for a while (trying to read, craft etc more).
I think the new series of Dr Who kind of put me in the mood for some sci-fi or fantasy, and browsing iPlayer the other day, I came across it.
I was looking for some MN threads on it, and they mostly, if not totally, date back to the noughties! I'm so late to the party. In fact I think everyone's gone home, got changed out of their party clothes and the glasses cleared away - years ago! So, here I am having a party of one! Loving it though.
Anyone else? Telly, films or even literature you've discovered years later?!

I’ve just started watching Ugly Betty.

ItsMintUpNorth · 19/05/2024 16:00

I've just started Fat friends on Netflix and loving it so far. Watched desperate housewives through lockdown 1 and also I hadn't watched the vicar of Dibley until last Christmas when we decided to watch them all one day!

I get lots of clips of Call the Midwife on TikTok and always think it looks good so been toying with the idea of starting that.

tothesea · 19/05/2024 16:04

DH and I have been together for 22 years..for most of that time he has been bugging me to watch Sopranos with him. I never fancied it but recently gave in as had nothing else to watch.
We watched the last one last night and I am bereft. Incredibly well written, plotted and acted, not just violence and gangsters as I thought.

Another one I came very late to was Band Of Brothers, we are due a rewatch of that.

NoNameNoOne · 19/05/2024 16:43

Unforgotten - amazing
Elementary - only watched last year and loved it
Merlin - some household names in this

Bobbotgegrinch · 19/05/2024 17:34

Me and DP are currently working through the X Files at the moment, having never gotten round to it when it was on.

And 16yo DD is currently watching Buffy with me, and Murder She Wrote with DP.

90s / 00s TV was peak TV for me. Just the right amount of serialisation while still having every episode tell an individual story.

Thankweyou · 19/05/2024 17:39

Spooks - brilliant!

Gunz · 19/05/2024 17:41

For me it is Game of Thrones- didn't start until the final series had been shown. Now watching Greys Anatomy for the first time. I was curious why this series got rave reviews - I am now hooked!

Harriet766 · 19/05/2024 17:50

Yes, I always seem to be behind everyone else. I watched (and loved) the following long after they were released:

This Country
Cracker
House of Cards (the original British version, not the American spin off)
Brideshead Revisited
I Claudius
Breaking Bad

BCBird · 19/05/2024 17:55

I'm re-watching West Wing - still so good!

I rewatch this about once a year. Best TV show ever.

magicstar1 · 19/05/2024 17:57

Yes, I binge watched the whole of The West Wing a couple of years ago.
The last older show I found was The Shield and it’s bloody fantastic. I’ve watched the entire series a few times now.

MercyDulb0ttle · 19/05/2024 17:57

I’m always late for everything.

I only started watching TBBT last year.

WhamBamThankU · 19/05/2024 09:12

I watched Sopranos last year 24 years after it came out. Absolutely fantastic series!

Never seen it!

TheBottomsOfMyTrousersAreRolled · 19/05/2024 17:58

We watched breaking bad really late. After id watched three seasons of better call saul.

i watched the whole of This is us last year.

crenellations · 19/05/2024 17:58

I watched Cracker for the first time last year. Good as it is, there is a lot of suspension of disbelief required...

Cardiac Arrest was not bad too, kind of weird to watch in the 2020s. Enjoyed Bodies first, also many years later!

This Country long after everyone else.

Re-watched Fresh Meat for first time since it was on in the early 2010s, still great.

Its hilarious.

Just started watching a series called Bodies on Netflix from about 20 years ago. (No not the recent time travel one with Stephen Graham which has the same name - I saw that too!)

This is a medical drama and it's by Jed Mercurio, the guy who wrote 'Line of Duty'. It's very good, sad and funny too. Stars Max Beesley, also features Keith Allen (Lily's dad), Susan Lynch. Anyway it's only on Netflix until 11 June, so you'd have to be quick.

Over the last couple of years I have stopped watching linear TV and streamed loads of series I appear to missed when they were originally broadcast, as well as rewatching my old favourites, eg Twin Peaks.

Like pps we've recently enjoyed gems like The Sopranos, Brideshead Revisited, , A Very Peculiar Practice, Boys From the Blackstuff (blimey, that's going back! - sad to hear of the recent death of Bernard Hill) etc, etc.

Rogerstreasures · 19/05/2024 20:13

Don’t know if anyone’s interested, but there’s a new channel beginning on Sky this week. I think it’s on Thursday and it’s called Sky Rewind. Lots of old series on it including Shine on Harvey Moon with Linda Robson amongst other.

Scintella · 19/05/2024 09:19

Fat Friends -came out in 2004 ithink

Snap!

SilverSimca · 19/05/2024 20:31

We only ever have had Freeview so any series that was on Sky,or some other platform, we used to watch on DVD when it came out- Battlestar Galactica, Breaking Bad, The Wire, House of Cards, The Killing,The Bridge, Borgen, all those were on DVD box sets. (I know some of those were on BBC 4 but we didn't see them at the time). We can't do that anymore though because series on Netflix just don't seem to come out on DVD, like Stranger Things.
I prefer coming to a series late as then it's all there to watch, otherwise I forget what's happened between series.

crackfoxy · 19/05/2024 20:55

Greys anatomy , didn't realise there are 20 seasons!!

Iloveeverycat · 19/05/2024 21:00

Band of gold
Bad girls
Prime suspect

Absurdgiraffe · 19/05/2024 21:04

Also discovered Life on Mars years later and loved it.

I'd recommend Alias.

MumofSpud · 19/05/2024 21:42
