Discovering a series years after!

Has anyone been late, as in very late, to the party with a series? Something it turns out was a phenomenon in its time.
I've just discovered Torchwood in the last week! Circa 18 years after it initially aired! I mean I knew it existed, knew it was Dr Who related, but beyond that wasn't hugely interested at the time. I was so busy with life back then, and also didn't have a television for a while (trying to read, craft etc more).
I think the new series of Dr Who kind of put me in the mood for some sci-fi or fantasy, and browsing iPlayer the other day, I came across it.
I was looking for some MN threads on it, and they mostly, if not totally, date back to the noughties! I'm so late to the party. In fact I think everyone's gone home, got changed out of their party clothes and the glasses cleared away - years ago! So, here I am having a party of one! Loving it though.
Anyone else? Telly, films or even literature you've discovered years later?!

I started watching Greys anatomy. I’m now on series 12.

FritataPatate · 19/05/2024 22:13

I'm OBSESSED with ITV Irish gangster series Love/Hate. Not my usual genre, but I love how the characters develop.

ilovepixie · 19/05/2024 22:26

I've just discovered Benidorm! It's brilliant!

QueSyrahSyrah · 19/05/2024 22:28

DH and I recently discovered Taskmaster, 17 series after everyone else did.

Soukmyfalafel · 19/05/2024 22:49

I watched Broadchurch last year and a few years back started Line of Duty. Last year started Strike and Unforgotten, which I love.

Poldark is on my list to watch too.

Mothership4two · 19/05/2024 22:50

Misfits - thought it was very funny and I am sure I am completely the wrong demographic. Game of Thrones had finished by then and was a bit weirded out by psychopath Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) playing wet Simon who later became hot Simon. What a good actor.

Also Suits despite most of my friends watching it. Something about the title put me off. Very slick and watchable.

Mothership4two · 19/05/2024 22:53

Oh yes and Broadchurch. We watched series one and two when series three came out, which we didn't get round to watching (was Broadchurched out by then)

justasking111 · 19/05/2024 22:55

Mad men
Private practice
NIP tuck.

I was busy raising children at the time

Housewife2010 · 19/05/2024 22:58

I'm loving The Brothers on TPTV on Thursday nights. It was first aired 1972-76.

NewName24 · 19/05/2024 22:59

I've watched loads of sitcoms from the 90s over the last couple of years - I think a combination of life being just too hectic to watch much TV in the 90s, and the fact that when I did watch TV, at that age, sitcoms probably weren't my priority. But now I'm older, they are nice, easy watching.

I'm also just about to start watching Series2 of The Crown <-- Yup, very late to the party.

I watched Sopranos last year 24 years after it came out. Absolutely fantastic series!

Opened the thread to say this - I'm right at the end of The Sopranos now, and absolutely gutted it's almost over. I have no idea why I've never watched it before. It's just brilliant.

Someone mentioned The Americans, that's another excellent series. I watched that last year. Fantastic. And they knocked it out of the park with the ending - no cop-outs, no BS, just edge-of-your-seat, too-tense-to-breathe perfect TV.

VelcroRevolver · 19/05/2024 23:20

I’ve just watched all three seasons of The Fall, about 10 years after everyone else.
Oh and have just watched the whole of Line of Duty. I watched the first two seasons, then my Mum and Dad wanted to watch it and I watched the first two series again with them prior to the third season coming out and then we watched that together. When the fourth season arrived my husband got interested and I then watched the first three with him and then we watched the fourth together. After that my Mum got sick and then died and a year later Dad followed her and Line of Duty got forgotten.
About a month ago I found out my MIL had never seen it and it’s exactly the kind if thing she loves, so we started watching it again and have now finally finished the whole thing.

TheMithrasDirective · 19/05/2024 23:22

Oh, and Bob's Burgers. Had a great time watching all of that with DD last year before she left for uni. Takes a couple of series to find its groove, but brilliant thereafter.

ineedtostopbeingdramaticfirst · 19/05/2024 23:32

I recently watched

Suits
Criminal minds
Downton abbey

Loved them all

AlwaysTheRenegade · 20/05/2024 00:19

Where are you guys all watching the old school English shows now britbox has ended? I was a few episodes into at home with the Braithwaites 😂 very vaguely remembered I loved it in primary school, and fat friends. I love the older syndicates that Kay Mellor wrote too

chocolatecoveredpeanut · 20/05/2024 00:26

I watched all of Doc Martin last month, having somehow only watched the very first one years ago. Lovely, calm but funny show.

I love watching 80s and 90s things I might have missed as a kid and seeing the old cars and fashions 😊

Lemonell · 20/05/2024 00:29

I really liked Torchwood until they did the joint BBC/US series while it clearly improved the budget it lost its spark and episodes felt bit drawn out. Although I'm not sure if Id still like Captain Jack as much since it was reported about John Barrowman always getting his dick out on unconsenting people & pretending it was funny.

Orphan black
Damages - I watched first series or 2 of both but think later weren't on the same channel so I've only recently watched them in full.
Person of interest
Bones

I'm always gutted when I watch some old series, get hooked then find it got cancelled before it's come to a satisfactory conclusion.

Mothership4two · 20/05/2024 00:36

The Torchwood series about the children being taken by aliens really affected and upset me and I often think about it now even though it's years since I watched it (when it was first broadcast) - brr! I assume it must be Children of Earth from other posters comments on here.

@AlwaysTheRenegade the Britbox brand and most of the content is still available within ITVx Premium. It's quite a cheap subscription compared to Netflix etc, think it's about £5.99 a month. Plus you can also watch all the ITV stuff with no adverts, plus a lot of the films from (I think) the Canal Plus (?) channel, which is also available on Amazon.

So a pretty good value subscription really, although the software is a bit clunky, but adequate.

Pemba · 20/05/2024 00:53

Actually I just checked and At Home with the Braithwaites is actually available on ITVx (the free version), so you wouldn't even have to pay for that one, just suffer a few adverts.

Same here. I'd seen people talking about it but just wasn't sure what it was like so I never bothered. I then was bored when I had Covid a few months ago and got through about 4 seasons of it within a week. I'm now on season 8 and I love knowing I have so much to look forward to. I couldn't watch it during my most recent illness though as I had bronchitis and laughing set off the worst coughing fits.

BobnLen · 20/05/2024 06:21

House, I watched that recently, also Six Feet Under, I think I missed a lot of these originally because DS was a younger so we watched a lot of family type stuff

I‘m glad I read your comment. I watched season 1 during the pandemic but honestly didn’t realise there was more than one season. I have a busy week ahead of me.

muddyford · 20/05/2024 07:59

I only discovered how brilliant 'Vera' was back in November.

SilverBirch99 · 20/05/2024 08:02

I've never watched Gavin & Stacey but as they've announced the last ever episode for Christmas and I've always felt it's one that that I will watch eventually , so I've just bingewatched it .
