Discovering a series years after!

Has anyone been late, as in very late, to the party with a series? Something it turns out was a phenomenon in its time.
I've just discovered Torchwood in the last week! Circa 18 years after it initially aired! I mean I knew it existed, knew it was Dr Who related, but beyond that wasn't hugely interested at the time. I was so busy with life back then, and also didn't have a television for a while (trying to read, craft etc more).
I think the new series of Dr Who kind of put me in the mood for some sci-fi or fantasy, and browsing iPlayer the other day, I came across it.
I was looking for some MN threads on it, and they mostly, if not totally, date back to the noughties! I'm so late to the party. In fact I think everyone's gone home, got changed out of their party clothes and the glasses cleared away - years ago! So, here I am having a party of one! Loving it though.
Anyone else? Telly, films or even literature you've discovered years later?!

I recommend Torchwood. I'm still near the beginning. Many people, according to reviews, say it gets much better later on. So, it's great it's all there for me already, and I don't have to wait a year for the next series. One advantage of being late to the party!

Series 1 is really poor. It was a big disappointment when it came out.
Series 2 is definitely better but still had a lot of so-so parts alongside some quite good parts, so overall it's just ok.
Series 3 is unbelievably fantastic, some of the best sci-fi ever made.
Series 4 was unnecessary.

I'm late to most things, I watched all of Call the Midwife last year, all caught up now.
Heartland, I watched last year and series 17 has just been released on Netflix

Thanks. I'll look forward to series 3 👍

The Americans.

So I can feel a part of the action and to debrief after watching each episode, I've found a US-based forum where each episode was discussed at the time. I think the last season was broadcast in 2018, so rather late to the party.

I’ve just started Dexter for the first time, its great!

So jealous! I'd love to watch this again for the first time. Just wait till season 4!

ApolloandDaphne · 19/05/2024 12:53

I've just started watching Mum. I really like Lesley Manville and I was looking at what she was in and came across it.

Florabella · 19/05/2024 12:55

I have just found Life on Mars (about 20 years late I think); and it's fantastic!

RedRobyn2021 · 19/05/2024 13:12

Supernatural, I watched it years later!

This really is fantastic, I watched after it was long finished and Ashes to Ashes

Shetland, Kin and Boat Story.
I'm half way through Killing Eve atm.
I usually binge watch on a wet Sunday afternoon.

RoseyLentil · 19/05/2024 13:23

Oh and all of Peaky Blinders over Christmas 2022 🤣

Actually, looking at this thread, I realise I'm late for most things too. So many dramas on this thread that I've not seen any of yet. Though funnily enough, Call the Midwife is one I have seen most of. I think I was only about a year late for the first series. There's so much of it now, it'd be a lovely new find for someone.
I also recently started watching some of the 90s and 00s Dickens adaptations...

I actually think a lot of brilliant television was made in the noughties, so maybe that's why it's being discovered and enjoyed now by many a viewer?

The first couple of series of Torchwood were good.

Children of Earth was freaky

The last series was good in its own way... but not Torchwood.

Totally on point
Brilliant series.....
Also loved mad men.
Started watch GOT half way through...

ChocoChocoLatte · 19/05/2024 14:56

We came late to Parks and Recreation and superstore. Loved them both

CurlewKate · 19/05/2024 15:02

We had a lot of fun introducing our children to Dinner Ladies, Brideshead Revisited, Black Dwarf, Pride and Prejudice, Blackadder....

Cotswoldbee · 19/05/2024 15:08

Only decided to watch Gavin And Stacey last year (always avoided it prior to that as I hate James Corden).
Enjoyed it in spite of JC.😲

I was late to the party with Jam And Jerusalem but have since watched all series (and special) multiple times as it is just so warm & cosy.😁

Dinner ladies!😘

Another one we missed at the time (no idea how as we loved VW?) but once watched, it has been a firm favourite and re-watched so many times.
Funnily enough, we both hate Julie Walters character and although the series would not work without her, find her very annoying.
Nothing against JW, love her other work with VW (Mrs Overall!😆) but not this time.

ajandjjmum · 19/05/2024 15:17

DH and I both enjoyed Happy Valley at the end of last year - not mega old, but we were certainly behind the curve!

I re-watched Poldark - still loved it.

skyeisthelimit · 19/05/2024 15:28

I watched the last ever episode of Downton Abbey one Christmas and thought that it looked good and then watched every episode. Have rewatched it several times since.

I recently watched all of Broadchurch, after watching the American version of series 1 (also stars David Tennant).

Other series that I discovered late but now love and watched several times

Stranger Things
Manifest
Call The Midwife
From
Line of Duty
Dance Moms Grin

longtompot · 19/05/2024 15:30

Downton Abbey

The Bridge - the Danish version with subs

Happy Valley

CurlewKate · 19/05/2024 15:37

We found lots of things when our children were younger and we were looking for family viewing that worked with a 4 year age gap.

cheapskatemum · 19/05/2024 15:52

Last Tango in Halifax - binge watched last year as I like both Nicola Walker and Sarah Lancashire. Absolutely loved it.

I also love James Norton, so watched the first few series of Grantchester this year. Also The Detectorists.

I haven't summoned the courage to watch Happy Valley yet.

AnnetteKurtan · 19/05/2024 15:54

Cutting It. Never finished it at the time .
