Many people boycotted the vote because of Israel taking part

The vote is supposed to be based on whether you thought the song was the best, not to support a particular country or a religion.

People can vote for whatever reason they like.

This is a good demonstration of why knee jerk boycotts don’t work. The anti-Israel people have boycotted so can’t be surprised Israel did so well on the public vote without them there to balance things out.

Its almost like people don’t actually care, they just want to be loud and get a Pat on the back for having the ‘right’ opinion

YaMuvva · 12/05/2024 02:31

YaMuvva · 12/05/2024 01:42

That’s literally my answer.

You’ve alluded to Jewish conspiracy theories with absolutely no evidence. Namely that they have power on the media or are somehow stealing with bot votes

Can I suggest reading up the Holocaust Memorial Trust’s very Seinfeld definitions of anti-semitism? They take a great deal from the propaganda used against Jews in the 10’s/20’s/30’s and how the modern day version theories used back then, prevail today.

I promise this was supposed to say defined not Seinfeld, but I am enjoying the irony of my autocorrect error 🫠

pootlin · 12/05/2024 01:45

The Youtube propaganda is covered by media outlets.

This isn’t an equal war, Israel has the military and financial strength, plus US backing.

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4919757-to-be-put-off-by-the-israeli-ads-on-youtube

https://www.dailydot.com/debug/pro-israel-youtube-ads-cartoons/?amp

Whilst it is terrible this ad ended up on a child’s device (I can relate as my son aged 5 saw a pornographic ad on YT Kids) and that’s obviously the fault of the gaming platform, Israel have the right to inform people of what is really happening especially when so much terrorist-loving anti-Semitic inaccuracies are flying around. Never have I heard so much misinformation regarding one state - including that Hamas are peacekeepers - and I don’t object to them telling their side at all, and doing it honestly:. There is nktbing wrong with seeking support in wartime.

Why does war have to be equal? Thank god Nazis werent equal to Allied Forces in WWII.

YaMuvva · 12/05/2024 02:45

Also given only 6 videos were identified and the nature of YT advertising is unspecified, I don’t think it’s backs your claim as well as you think it does

badatdecisions · 12/05/2024 02:51

YaMuvva · 12/05/2024 01:44

It IS targeting Hamas, and has been successful in doing so - this is war, there is responsibility on both sides and civilians casualties are wrong but inevitable

So do you think the children being held hostage are pro-Netenyahu? Or were they just people going about their day?

There are 5000 Palestinian hostages being held by the Israelis though. Many of whom are teenagers and kids "imprisoned" indefinitely for literal joke made up excuses.

frankincenseandmyrrh · 12/05/2024 02:51

I suppose that is the ending this year's song contest deserved: a silly pretentious man in a frilly skirt doing admirable balancing while 'singing' a dull, silly, and pretentious song.

Public shows of affection in both countries are considered unacceptable for both religions

You can wear what you want in both countries depending on where you are. In religious settings you need to cover up, for example. On the beach you can dress how you like.

No one however can walk down the streets of Gaza anymore though, there’s nothing left!

Public shows of affection are frowned upon in Muslim and Orthodox Jewish communities.

Israel is largely not Orthodox, and it would be fine.

However even supporting LGBT rights in Palestine would get you into hot water, let alone being gay. Being gay is criminalised in Palestine, and your husband could also rape you and getting an abortion would land you in jail, as could drinking alcohol. Abortion is legal is Israel as is drinking and homosexuality

They also only recently repealed the ‘marry your rapist’ law

Suggesting the dress code is the same is absolutely laughable. As is your attempts to make out they have the same laws.

I mean it’s their country they can enforce whatever laws they like but pretending that the human rights of citizens are the same is beyond obtuse.

Yes, I’m asking which bit, the Youtube propaganda or the televotes?

Both/either (I’m slow at catching up on this thread)

Loreen did not get a landslide public vote, Finland got 133 more points from the public vote than Sweden last year. The jury vote tipped it for Loreen.

Ah I must be misremembering

Finland, that’s it! They were robbed last year.

For the same reason that Russia was banned.
If the Eurovision is not going to be political then no country should be banned. They really can’t just pick and chose.

I agree with that. And I disagreed with Russia being excluded. But there absolutely should be consistency. Especially when Eurovision claims it’s non political all the live long day

HannibalHeyes · 12/05/2024 02:58

I think it's clear what we're seeing here...

Again - proof please that 5000 innocent Palestinians are being imprisoned please

YaMuvva · 12/05/2024 03:04

Anyway @mathanxiety is right, I apologise but I also won’t stand for misinformation and anti-semitism. But happy to not post about the conflict on here annymore (there’s really nothing left to say) and just talk about the contest.

So if everyone had a wish list for next year’s UK representative what would it be?
I think this year shows Brits ‘doing camp’ doesn’t work.
We need a catchy belter of a song like Spaceman was.
It also didn’t hurt that Sam Ryder was easy on the eye.

I agree it is a music competition and about which song is best, not about politics. So that begs the question - why did the muppets boycott it?

I actually think they didn’t boycott it and instead voted for the evil devil worshipping bitch.

Sam Ryder again would be a good shout for next year although any decent singer not writhing around in a seedy toilet would do the job.

@Coshei i reported it too as hate speech.
But MNHQ rarely take these sort of posts down I’m afraid. We’ll wait and see.

Edited

Yes I can see that those outrageous posts have not been deleted. It’s a shame how some people are allowed to behave on this site.

Blatantly misrepresenting posts and throwing around wild allegations.

Wild accusations like that there are only armies of bots or hordes of global Jews voting for Israel?

Or even crazier, that Israel is far right and on par with Palestine for safety.

How do people not even know these basic facts about the country they are attacking, or frothing at the mouth to support?

LGBT people can live peacefully in Israel, and it would not be considered socially acceptable to kill them.

Meanwhile, the horrors that have happened to gay people in Palestine (or those even just suspected of it), gleefully backed and enforced by the public, brutally and viciously gang raped, tortured until they don't look like people anymore and their own family throwing them from high buildings. Their own fathers, sons and brothers. Have you seen the videos of what the actual Palestinian people think and do about gay people?

Don't babyify and whitewash a country just because they are your current social media darling, it's disgusting.

Happyhoppy15 · 12/05/2024 06:57

Just wondering how has a thread around Eurovision turned in to a discussion about what’s happening in Israel and Gaza right now?

Nomdejeur · 12/05/2024 07:00

I voted for Israel. Funnily enough no Israelis made me do it, I did it a) because I liked the song b) because she’s a young girl who has faced vile abuse this last couple of weeks.

Just wondering how has a thread around Eurovision turned in to a discussion about what’s happening in Israel and Gaza right now?

Some posters, and the audience, couldn't seperate the Israel entry from their opinion on the war and which side they consider 'evil'. Happy that the young girl supporting Israel was being booed, and saying it was well deserved.

They were shocked by the public votes, as they believed everyone else thought the same as the miniscule amount of people on twitter/X/their mates who love a good placard holding.

Given this is a public forum, a discussion ensued.

Thanks for the summary. And I assume again that there was no recognition of the harm Hamas has done? But happy to hate on a young girl from Israel.

But I never claimed this, yet I have been accused of antisemitism and being into conspiracy theories. This is honestly toxic.

But Ollie Alexander in Years and Years must have been a successful group across Europe, surely?

I had never heard of Olly Alexander before his participation in Eurovision. So in the Netherlands he is not well known.

Just looked it up, he had a couple of minor hits 10 years ago. One of his songs reached number 3 in the charts, two of them number 22 and the rest were in the so-called 'tip parade'.

fungipie · 12/05/2024 07:32

Totally unkown in Europe.
