Then you need to send Sam Ryder and not this crap.

PossumintheHouse · 12/05/2024 13:32

If - and I say IF - Joost Klein is found to have done nothing wrong/the disqualification was disproportionate, I truly hope the Netherlands will send him back in 2025. Play the long game, guys.

Someone put up an interesting interview with Martin Osterdahl of the EBU who said that Eurovision was about the TV companies rather than the governments, so the values of the TV company and whether it behaved independently or was controlled by or in agreement with a government were issues. Not sure that works given the flags and nationalism on display, but I'd prefer zero bans.

This is the reason Russia and Belarus are banned - their broadcasters broke EBU rules. The Israeli broadcaster has not broken EBU rules, so they're not banned.

"Russian broadcasters themselves were suspended from the EBU due to their persistent breaches of membership obligations and the violation of public service values," - Curran

Interesting!

Late to this thread but uk entry was absolutely shite and I’m not all surprised it did badly. Crap song, crappily sung. Tried to be too cool for school and ended up looking ridiculous.

I liked Croatia. Perfectly bonkers, catchy Eurovision song. I did think the Swiss guy had a lovely voice.

@RedToothBrush Did you spot the snipers on the roof? Been to that arena many times, the security last night was like nothing I’ve seen before.

Sad with the booing.

There were snipers on the Liverpool Building in Liverpool so I was expecting that as a minimum tbh. But then I'm used to that level of security in the UK.

They had snipers by the fan arena. I don't know about Malmö Arena itself as tbh I didn't look. Having seen them at the fan arena I'd have been more surprised if they hadn't. There were a lot of armed police about in the crowd by the entrance.

I have to say I felt that security into the arena had some questionable decisions going on. I won't go into details but it was clear from what I saw that the Swedish authorities weren't really used to doing gig security. I have seen better security going into a bog standard medium sized gig in the UK for some things.

The no bag rule is probably a decent idea but they were far too reliant on it.

I wasn't really surprised though. I think the UK has a different mentality to it all due to the Northern Ireland stuff generally.

My impression was generally that protesters were less problematic than you'd get in the UK (cultural differences I suspect - Swedes are much more polite and well behaved than Brits generally from my observations) until yesterday evening as I believe there was some hassle from a minority in the small protest permitted by the stadium. So this again will be part of policing decisions and mindsets.

It could have been a lot worse.

So something of a mixed bag to my mind.

It was generally speaking ok at the arenas having said that. I felt safe despite having some misgivings over some areas not being as good as perhaps they should as my expectations. It could have been worse (I've been to gigs all over the world and attitudes to security vary wildly).

I should add that I am VERY sensitive to the security stuff and do make a point of taking notes about what staff and police are doing

Or even Austria

I live not too far from Malmö Arena, and have never seen security like this.

But I agree that it would not be too difficult to smuggle things in if you really wanted to. I went to the melody song contest there and it was interesting to observe staff. No bag policy seems a bit like false security to me tbh. All in all I think Malmö did well, and most demonstraters behaved. We expected a lot worse.

Can I ask whether, putting all politics completely aside, people think that the Israeli entry would really have done as well without the current situation in the Middle East?

Various PP have come on saying that they voted for her because they ‘liked the song’, but to me she didn’t stand out at all from all the other attractive young female singers that made up about half the entries! To put this into context, usually the acts that I like best tend to do really badly, so I clearly have no musical taste. This year was a bit of an exception because Croatia and Switzerland were my favourites!

Another question: I haven’t heard the Dutch entry, but apparently it was tipped to do well. Would having that song in the mix potentially have changed the outcome at all?

RainbowColouredRainbows · 12/05/2024 14:07

I really enjoyed Switzerland's performance. It was a catchy song and it was incredibly well sung. I think ours was bad but not zero points bad, but then all the acts that involved sleaze over fun did probably worse than deserved (Spain, Finland). It was a fun year though. I'm pleased it wasn't just love ballad after love ballad which it has been in the past.

ScribblingPixie · 12/05/2024 14:10

I thought the Spanish entry was about sexism and misogyny in Spain (being called a 'vixen' for being unconventional or successful) and the half-naked men were a response to the Spanish song a year or two ago when only the women had their arses out while the men were clothed? Not sure, but that's how I took it and I was sorry it didn't do better.

yellous · 12/05/2024 14:13

Maybe you can get Linda Woodruff to represent you next year?

flyingwingsabove · 12/05/2024 14:15

I’ve seen a few tik tok videos this morning from inside the venue last night. Not all as it appears on the TV in terms of booing and cheering for Israel. There is a video of the crew doing the Estonia dance which is fabulous.

The UK entry was very disappointing. We were lucky not to come last.

ohdelay · 12/05/2024 14:20

Our entry was poor. Think it wanted to be George Michael's Outside (great song) but didn't have the vocals, tune or charisma. Think Switzerland, Israel and France ( in the semi) had best vocals so not surprised they did well. Politics aside all the low scoring songs were poor. One thing I can't understand is how the popular vote liked Croatia but hated Norway since they were pretty similar to me.

Norway was nothing like Croatia? Norway had the woman calling her cows. It was awful.

The rock out moments were identical. I have no idea what either song was about

EmpressSoleil · 12/05/2024 14:29

I didn’t like Norway on first listen but it did grow on me.
Croatia was just so damn catchy. I don’t dance, ever. But Croatia was one song I would jump up and dance too. 😂
I was backing Switzerland though so really happy they won.

Being completely objective the song was ok but nothing special. She sang it well. The staging was nothing special. There was nothing stand out about it but it was technically well done.

It was midtable fodder. Probably around 9th as a best case to about 14th imho.

I listened to it on Spotify and it was crap. Can't imagine it would have won.
