I am very please Israel placed fifth and finished above Ireland, which must have caused the cosplaying witch to have another crybaby tantrum.

I feel bad for Croatia, they had the better song than Switzerland, but the juries tipped it in the Swiss favour. Maybe they’ll have it in Montreux next year, that would be cool.

For the same reason that Russia was banned.
If the Eurovision is not going to be political then no country should be banned. They really can’t just pick and chose.

Russia were banned for starting a war. For the same reason Palestine would be banned if they wanted to enter.

If you think Israel should be banned then I assume you also wanted Ukraine banned as well.

It is no confidence that Ukraine won the competition a couple of years ago and Israel won the public vote this year. People support victims and rightly so.

There is no justice in Israel’s war:

A) Israel has killed multiple times more non-combatants than combatants. And not just regular men or women - Israel has murdered multiple children for every Hamas member killed. Can you imagine such a death toll being defended in, for example, modern conflict in Europe.

B) The origins of the conflict stem from Israel’s brutal occupation of another peoples’ land. And not just mere occupation, but also theft of Palestinian homes, all manner of physical abuse, degradation, and killing of children.

C) Netanyahu has constantly worked against a two state solution. His policies the last decade were purposely designed to allow Hamas a deep foot hold so as to deny any clear path to a two state solution headed by another Palestinian political entity.

Watching it from NZ the right song absolutely won, it was catchy and very well performed, but would have been happy for France or Croatia to win as well.

I only choose to watch the final so missed all the drama. I think it was unfair that Israel chose a young person to be put in that environment. Her song and perfomance were good under the circumstances she was put in, but not top 10 by any means.

As I am not in the UK and dont know who Olly is, the UK entry was embarrassing. It was a mediocre song at best and not well performed. Even France with his sore voice was miles better. Worse songs and performances have done better though. I think a combination of the audience not being able to see the performer i.e. like Rosa Linn and the very sexual dancing made it easy to not vote for. All the other performances with sexual dancing like Spains didn't do well either.

Israel the victim? You mean the occupying military superpower which, so far, has killed upwards of 13,000 children? Your morality is warped indeed. Happy Eurovision.

Again - proof please that 5000 innocent Palestinians are being imprisoned please

“CNN spoke to three Israeli whistleblowers who worked at the Sde Teiman desert camp, which holds Palestinians detained during Israel’s invasion of Gaza. All spoke out at risk of legal repercussions and reprisals from groups supportive of Israel’s hardline policies in Gaza.
They paint a picture of a facility where doctors sometimes amputated prisoners’ limbs due to injuries sustained from constant handcuffing; of medical procedures sometimes performed by underqualified medics earning it a reputation for being “a paradise for interns”; and where the air is filled with the smell of neglected wounds left to rot”

https://edition.cnn.com/2024/05/10/middleeast/israel-sde-teiman-detention-whistleblowers-intl-cmd/index.html#:~:text=Israeli%20guards%20would%20sometimes%20take,and%20some%20bones%2C%20apparently%20broken.

This was published yesterday. I expect 5000 is likely an extreme under representation given the barbarity of this Israeli regime and their total disregard for norms of international law in other areas of the conflict.

FFS it's a song contest. The better songs and singers did best regardless of sexual orientation, sexual dancing, previous chart success, global politics, arena audience make up, etc.

As soon as the UK gets that into its head it will start to compete more regularly. Please, please, please don't let Rylan anywhere near it! And stay away from disco bangers. It's not what Europe and the world want.

For some reason British people really want to believe that the rest of Europe hates the UK.

They don't!! Just send better songs. Sam Ryder did really well because he had a great song and a great personality that really made him shine during Eurovision.

Olly Alexander did not do well because it was too gay even for Eurovision. Plus not sung very well.

AhBiscuits · 12/05/2024 08:14

I definitely think Switzerland deserved to win. Nemo was fantastic, a really good song and performance. Croatia was my second favourite. I liked our song but I think he wasn't great on the night. Still, the only country to get nothing from the public vote feels harsh.

Coshei · 12/05/2024 07:17

But I never claimed this, yet I have been accused of antisemitism and being into conspiracy theories. This is honestly toxic.

I don't think your initial comment that you considered 300 public votes for Eden Golan 'shocking' is antisemitic. Whether that shock is due to you not liking her song or whether it's due to your surprise that so many people either don't agree with you over the war or are happy to vote for a song they like despite their political beliefs.

@InTheUpsideDownToday 's answer that they were 'bot paid for votes' is antisemitic. As @YaMuvva pointed out, it's pushing very old anti-semitic tropes of Jews a) controlling the media and b) being greedy thieves.

I suspect from your later answers that you didn't even notice that. These tropes are so embedded that people often don't. Try to think of some insulting assumption which people make about some other ethnic or minority group without thinking. Tropes change over time, so I'm sure you can think of one which you're sensitive to but not the whole population is. Think of how some behind-the-times people don't even realise that they've said something outrageous because that picture is still part of their internal narrative. And then think how insulting that is to people in the ethnic/minority group who notice it because it's wrongly assumed about them every day. That's what is happening here.

You answered "Just Depressing" to @InTheUpsideDownToday 's antisemitic post, which implied that you agreed with it. That may not have been your intention, but it reads as agreement.

People on mumsnet often conflate the poster who made a comment with others who agreed with it, since we all read the thread once as a conversation and don't know the posters as individuals.

Maybe you don't believe that Eden Golan's high public vote came from bots or some other unethical way rather than individual fans deciding for their own reasons to vote for her.

Or maybe you have a specific, verified reason for believing that they do come from bots, which doesn't stem from your underlying assumptions about the Israeli government/Jews. Such that with the same proof as you currently hold, you would have believed the same thing of Lithuania if they had a higher than expected vote.

If so, you could (if you choose) clarify that and it would be clear that you were not in fact supporting antisemitic tropes.

See, I think the Swiss song was better and didn't like the Croatian song at all. These things are definitely subjective and I can see how Croatia got the popular vote whereas the juries preferred Switzerland because of the nature of the two songs.

Our song was notable for being one of the few songs that was sung badly. That is such a killer blow for a Eurovision song and we made the same mistake last year. A mediocre song sung very well will always pick up votes (e.g. France) but sending people that can't really perform live is never going to work.

statsfun · 12/05/2024 08:21

Hint: if your reason for believing in the bots is "but everyone knows that Israel...<some unverified rumour>" then you are being influenced by antisemitism.

XVGN · 12/05/2024 08:25

It's pretty daft that people take the UK's nil points personally. It simply means that every country found 12 other acts that they thought were better songs and/or singers. It really wasn't difficult. And it was nothing personal.

inappropriateraspberry · 12/05/2024 08:29

I've woken up this morning and realised that there isn't one song I could sing back right now. Only Dizzy, because I've heard it more in the radio etc. No catchy tunes or lyrics. Nothing like Heroes, or Fairytale that got in your head.

I thought it was the voting public who gave them zero points.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/05/2024 08:31

@Lonelycrab absolutely correct- not a single song was in my opinion remotely memorable- but I could say that nearly every year. then again I'm 62, it's clearly aimed it seems at a youngish crowd these days who just go for camp/pantomime and treat it like Strictly- rather than a contest about 'songs' I really don't like the politicisation of it either-

Israel was attacked by terrorists. They have a right to defend themselves.

I don’t know how people who support terrorist organisations sleep at night. I’d be ashamed of myself.

If these things are true, then they are shocking. Israel should certainly allow neutral observers access to check that prisoners are not being abused.

Sadly, abuses do sometimes happen when suspected combatants are held - think of Guantánamo Bay. It's absolutely the responsibility of the international community to hold allies to account.

Choux · 12/05/2024 08:37

Who should the UK send next year?

Last night the winner was quirky and fun but the angsty, fierce sings from Croatia and Ireland also did very well. And Israel and France's ballads as they had a great voices.

Last year it was a power ballad from a not too young woman. Finland who came second had someone in yellow shorts but it was fun.

2022 was the folksy, rap of Ukraine and Sam Ryder who had a great song done well.

So overly sexy staging has not done well over the last three years. But quirky and fun does. Great live voices and a song - be it a ballad or more rock - that shows off that voice does.

Given all that Olly was on a hiding to nothing last night. It's often watched by families who don't want to see thrusting. Graham and Rylan kept saying how great the staging was but Malin Åkerman's MIL who was in the audience and did Buck's Fizz staging must have known it wasn't right.

BirthdayRainbow · 12/05/2024 08:39

Had to bail as was so tired but with Olly getting zero public votes, does that literally mean not one person voted from him?

frankincenseandmyrrh · 12/05/2024 08:40

You really can't stage a gay orgy in a public urinal unless you've got some actual stage presence and singing chops. Olly is a recording artist, and can barely sing. The hip thrusting while wearing that shiny red codpiece was just unnecessary.

Someone must have voted for him! I think they round them up from however many thousand or whatever come in and equal 1 point. Clealry not enough.

No, it simply means every country's televote places at least 10 other songs above his. He could have come 11th in every vote and got 0 points.

AhBiscuits · 12/05/2024 08:42

Yes, Olly's singing was bad and that was never going to work. As soon as Nemo started singing I thought 'wow, he sounds fantastic'. So I think next year we should start by finding someone who can sing live beautifully and go from there.

I think the staging didn't work. It was a cool idea but executed poorly - everything looked so squished and awkward. And the bathroom looking so dirty was off-putting! I wonder how it would have landed with different scenery - a clean shower room, or in a gym or something.
