This will be my 12th Doctor. I’m a big Doctor Who fan. Happy memories of Sat with my dad watching cyber men and darleks.
But what the hell has happened? I’ve just finished, well I managed 25 mins, before I couldn’t take it anymore the 1st episode with the new Doctor and sidekick. Awful acting with a ludicrous plot (yes I know it’s fantasy) but it’s never been this stupid. Can’t help but think the BBC aren’t bothered and think they can put out anything and we’ll watch. Russell T Davies should have his pens taken off him and spare us anymore pain.

I can’t be the only Doctor Who fan who thinks like this. Absolutely Gutted 😞

To be honest, I kind of hope Disney does ditch it, and it can go back to being a purely BBC thing, and return to its old vibe.
I think Ncuti is a great Doctor. With quality scripts it could be as great as it was in its noughties plus heyday.
I was re-watching Turn Left (series 4) recently. Hadn't watched it for years - it's seriously good. I'd forgotten how good it was/is. I think the Disney association changed it to a different thing altogether, and it's a pity. We can but hope.

Just imagine the damage to the pride and reputation of the show if it’s dropped? I don’t see how the BBC would ever attract high status directors / writers / actors to a new, budget version in that case.

As I said before - the Disney connection must have made Dr Who irresistible for actors. Ncuti Gatwa didn’t need it, but it was surely a gateway to the whole Disney universe for others.

Perhaps the show runners would switch their focus entirely to spin offs?

British actors will continue to do Dr Who because of the affection we all have for it, I think. Like M&S - it goes through a crappy period but then pulls through. And we patiently wait it out and support it.
Dr Who doesn't need A list celebrities - it just needs good writing and decent actors.

Doctor Who doesn’t need Disney and will be better off without it I think. Agree with @ABirdsEyeView it just needs good writing and decent actors which the BBC can do

Are we advertising Costa or Starbucks?!
Ham and cheese toastie and a pumpkin latte would have been pounced on in most of those situations! Grin

I just finished a rewatch from Ecclestone onwards. 3rd time watching Jodie’s episodes an I enjoy them more and more. Way more into the last series than I was watching as they landed too. Looking forward to Christmas!

I am just getting to the end of DT's reign, having started to rewatch from the Ecclestone reboot onwards.

It's been brilliant to watch them again! What also stands out is how many faces crop up of actors that were not well know when it aired, but have gone on to do bigger things. Like a little nursery pool of great talent. Carey Mulligan, Felicity Jones are two that stand out, but there was loads more because I kept clocking them.

That's what the BBC was always good at: finding and nurturing star talent that goes on to bigger things. That's what it needs to focus this back on imo.

What's interesting as an Old Who fan is that the companions tended never to be seen again. Apart from Bonnie Langford who was seen as stunt casting at the time, Peter Purves who went on to Blue Peter, and perhaps Louise Jameson, very few of them are really known for anything other than their work on Dr Who.

But nowadays Billie Piper (cast when she was known purely as a teen pop star) Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, Jenna Coleman and Freema Agyeman have gone on to great things, or at least very solid success. Noel Clarke did too before the unpleasantness.

We are going to see Ncuti Gatwa in The Importance of Being Earnest on New Years Eve (rather excited!)

KomproMatilda · 22/11/2024 13:31

You should be! I have vague hopes of seeing it on screen in February. (Obviously not quite the same, but on this occasion more convenient for me.)
