This will be my 12th Doctor. I’m a big Doctor Who fan. Happy memories of Sat with my dad watching cyber men and darleks.
But what the hell has happened? I’ve just finished, well I managed 25 mins, before I couldn’t take it anymore the 1st episode with the new Doctor and sidekick. Awful acting with a ludicrous plot (yes I know it’s fantasy) but it’s never been this stupid. Can’t help but think the BBC aren’t bothered and think they can put out anything and we’ll watch. Russell T Davies should have his pens taken off him and spare us anymore pain.

I can’t be the only Doctor Who fan who thinks like this. Absolutely Gutted 😞

Oooh we seem to have started a couple of minutes early...

SheilaFentiman · 22/06/2024 00:55

I enjoyed that Tardis

KomproMatilda · 22/06/2024 01:00

I guess it was very RTD.

And now it’s all over - for now, at least.

QueenOfTheEntireFuckingUniverse · 22/06/2024 01:31

That was amazing on the big screen.

Rummikub · 22/06/2024 02:07

Yes I liked it on the big screen too

Rummikub · 22/06/2024 05:50

The cinema was almost full and it was funny to hear all these conversations going on around me about 11, etc in the interval.

ElleLeopine · 22/06/2024 09:08

Have just finished it, and now watching Unleashed.
Can't wait until we can discuss the episode!
And totally gutted that the series is now over and we have such a long wait!

There’s a live watch thread on this episode where it is being discussed.

I am confused about who is Ruby’s dad. She says William. Was that the name of the bad PM of 1946?

Nope, the bad PM from 2046 was Roger ap Gwilym.

Ah ok thank you! Makes much more sense.

thecatsthecats · 23/06/2024 12:28

Nope, the bad PM from 2046 was Roger ap Gwilym.

ap means son of.

So his surname could be son of William.
Potentially Another link to Ruby who we know is appearing in season 2.

KomproMatilda · 23/06/2024 15:12

@Rummikub - I swear I fell asleep trying to untangle timelines such that Ruby and Roger ap Gwilym might be related!

If she is, as promised, returning next season, it cannot have escaped RTD’s notice that snow has been falling around this daughter of a perfectly ordinary, not at all supernatural woman. If it isn’t resolved I may have to march to Cardiff for a one woman protest …

Rummikub · 23/06/2024 15:37

Thanks @8misskitty8

@KomproMatilda 😂 I guess in some ways it’s good to have the questions.
The snow thing does need to be resolved though.

it snowed around Mel when she was in the corridor and about to change. So I really thought those two were linked!

PuttingDownRoots · 23/06/2024 15:52

Maybe the snow was suteck rather than ruby? Or the goblins?

ARatEatingABlueberry · 23/06/2024 15:55

Nobody needs to know any of this TBH, but:

I really really want to be intrigued by all the mysteries — the snow, the distance of the TARDIS perception filter matching the old lady, Ruby's family, Mrs Flood, Susan, what's happened to the Master, etc. etc., and to have it all percolating in the back of my mind somewhere, building the anticipation and keeping me going until Doctor Who returns, but… it's all just a bit bollocks, isn't it? I can't bring myself to care because it doesn't feel real — well, real within my existing conception of Doctor Who, that is Grin I'm feeling as apathetic as I was about that Flux bullshit, but worse than that, I feel — well, glad that it's over, because I won't be sitting through more of this next Saturday in the hope that somehow it'll get some Whoishness back.

I drifted away from it with Jodie Whittaker (watched those series much later, during a real TV dry spell) and think I'll be doing it again.

KomproMatilda · 23/06/2024 16:49

I feel in general let down by the writing and show running.

I’m convinced the unspeakably gorgeous Ncuti Gatwa and his unreasonably youthful companion did the very best they could with what they were given. I can forgive the frequent tedious explanations for new Disney listeners, and don’t believe it was Disney gazillions that made so much of the season seem cursory and superficial. I found 73 Yards genuinely edge of my seat breathlessly enthralling. Rogue was nice enough if one didn’t have high expectations. Dot and Bubble felt novel but half finished. Boom was ok but not memorable … But I completely blame RTD - the standard should have been higher across the eight episodes.

CallMeDuringDrWhoAndIllKillYou · 23/06/2024 17:13

I'm just baffled by the fact that this series, which is made with Disney money, aimed partly at an entirely new worldwide family audience and which spent the first episode doing clunky "new viewers start here" exposition, finished with the most full-on, hardcore flashbacking to Old Who that we've seen in twenty years.

In some ways it's admirable bloody mindedness and personally I love both Pyramids of Mars (my first ever Who episode, aged 5 or 6) and Bonnie Langford. But a baffling choice.

ladyflower23 · 23/06/2024 17:41

I quite enjoyed the episode overall.

Loved the remembered Tardis.
Thought Ncuti felt more recognisable as 'The Doctor'.
Loved the cliffhanger with Mrs Flood.

Got bored during the spoon bit.
Really annoyed at the boring reveal of Ruby's mum and the ridiculousness of her pointing at the road sign and Sutek being as desperate as the viewers to find out her identity.

Thought the goodbye between Ruby and the Doctor was really well acted. Ncuti was brilliant in that scene.

Overall I have enjoyed this series. I still think it falls short of RTDs standards from the first time he was showrunner and the Moffat era, but a big improvement on what we got from Chris Chibnall.

I'm going to miss sitting down to watch it with my kids on a Saturday evening and hope we don't have to wait all the way to next Summer for the next series. There are a lot of loose ends to tie up and that have me intrigued...

KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop · 23/06/2024 18:32

The remembered tardis was cool, the rest of it was dull and lightweight.

Feels like they've dumbed the whole thing down since partnering with disney

SheilaFentiman · 23/06/2024 19:04

I still don’t know why Ncuti disappeared in the 73 Yards timeline. Where did he go and why?

InMySpareTime · 23/06/2024 19:27

The doctor and Ruby never did spend an entire episode together.
Is that a DW first, an entire series where the doctor leaves the companion every episode?

InMySpareTime · 23/06/2024 19:58

Also, there was no logic to the whole "pointing finger" storyline. She didn't think anyone was watching, so who was she pointing for ? If she wanted to name the baby Ruby she could have just left the word "Ruby" on a note pinned to her blanket.
Why would a 15 year old be wearing a cloak anyway? Where would she even get one?

Rummikub · 23/06/2024 20:05

PuttingDownRoots · 23/06/2024 15:52

Yes the snow being Sutekh would make sense.

im watching again followed by de who unleashed on bbc3.
