This will be my 12th Doctor. I’m a big Doctor Who fan. Happy memories of Sat with my dad watching cyber men and darleks.
But what the hell has happened? I’ve just finished, well I managed 25 mins, before I couldn’t take it anymore the 1st episode with the new Doctor and sidekick. Awful acting with a ludicrous plot (yes I know it’s fantasy) but it’s never been this stupid. Can’t help but think the BBC aren’t bothered and think they can put out anything and we’ll watch. Russell T Davies should have his pens taken off him and spare us anymore pain.

I can’t be the only Doctor Who fan who thinks like this. Absolutely Gutted 😞

Also, there was no logic to the whole "pointing finger" storyline. She didn't think anyone was watching, so who was she pointing for ? If she wanted to name the baby Ruby she could have just left the word "Ruby" on a note pinned to her blanket.
Why would a 15 year old be wearing a cloak anyway? Where would she even get one?

I think the fact she was 15 and underage was unnecessary.

Rummikub · 23/06/2024 20:12

I thought ruby did meet the PM of 1946 but at the start of his journey. When he asked her who the girl was.

SheilaFentiman · 23/06/2024 20:13

She did, but she has forgotten most of the 73 Yards alternate timeline

Rummikub · 23/06/2024 20:18

forgot it was the same episode

The doctor and Ruby never did spend an entire episode together.
Is that a DW first, an entire series where the doctor leaves the companion every episode?

Yes from when Eccleston took your hand then with Tennant and Smith you knew as a companion you were safe (well as can be), got a bit more worrying as the Doctors went on

with Ncuti I’d be ‘I’m ok here in the tardis, you go knock yourself out doing what ever you need to do, I’ll just stay here and call my mum'

OccasionalHope · 23/06/2024 20:33

Is it possible what we got told about boring real mum is all a lie which will be unravelled next season?

I can't believe for a moment that RTD would backtrack on a "ordinary people are special as well" message. It's such a core moral for him.

Yes the snow being Sutekh would make sense.

im watching again followed by de who unleashed on bbc3.

But the snow didn't feel evil, so I don't think that it was Sutekh.

Binglebong · 23/06/2024 21:16

Finally watched it and was bored. Best bit was Mrs Flood at the end

prettybird · 23/06/2024 21:47

Still to watch the Unleashed show on BBC3 to see if there is any further depth/explanation.

Distinctly underwhelmed Sad It was obvious when the duet of death killed everything that it would be undone, so no tension there. Far too many unresolved issues. Don't mind Mrs Flood carrying over but they've still to explain the snow and Ruby's mum being "ordinary" seemed such a cop out. And is "Mad Jack"/the 2046 Ruby's half? brother?

Rummikub · 23/06/2024 21:50

I was a tad annoyed about some of the loose ends. Then I watch unleashed and I forgive rtd as he just seems like a little excited kid with it. Maybe I’m too soft.

KomproMatilda · 23/06/2024 21:53

Oh, ok - if Unleashed will make me feel happier I’ll drag my feet over to it. Grin Didn’t seem much point now there’s no build up to the next episode.

Oh no pressure!!

I hope it’s the sane for you!

I think I just like his enthusiasm and where he gets the ideas from. Usually from his childhood dr who episodes.

Rummikub · 23/06/2024 21:57

They did show clips of other doctors crying.

suburburban · 23/06/2024 22:13

Which ones cried

I can't imagine the earlier ones pre 1996 doing this😀

Rummikub · 23/06/2024 22:27

Oh it was the new ones

Rummikub · 23/06/2024 22:29

You’re right about the old ones not.

I watched pyramids of mars and it made me laugh that nothing phased Tom baker. God of death on far side of the room? No problem I’ll just sidle in and hide behind the curtain.

Tennant and Eccleston

Rummikub · 23/06/2024 22:30

Tennant and Eccleston

There’s a great bit in Pyramids of Mars where they find the body of Laurence, who has been strangled by the animated corpse of his dead brother.

The Doctor is completely unaffected, with even Sarah telling him off for his cold reaction. He just points one that Laurence is the first of millions if Sutekh isn’t stopped.

Absolute boss and just how the character should be portrayed - benevolent but not a human being and not always reacting like one.

ABirdsEyeView · 24/06/2024 08:29

I thought this was total shite - UNIT letting kids work in a highly classified and dangerous environment (even if one of them was a genius and the other was Donna's child), the disappearance of all worlds apart from some random woman and a spoon Grin, the ridiculous reveal of Ruby's mum being ordinary, after all the pointing and cloak wearing and her face not being visible on Unit's super duper hi tech cctv! It's like they were making it up as they went along, instead of having a plan!
Mrs Flood has potential but honestly it was just crap.

Chalicefromthepalace · 24/06/2024 10:40

I’ve started watching the 2005 reboot series with my daughter and she much prefers these. She’s really enjoying Tennant as the Doctor and the episodes are holding her interest in a way the new series hasn’t.

I’m a bit frustrated that there are so many loose ends in the latest series - it makes me less invested in the story if things don’t ever get explained.

JaninaDuszejko · 24/06/2024 14:00

RTD always had more loose ends than Steven Moffat.

The woman with the spoon was Sian Clifford (Fleabag's sister Claire) and it was such a tiny part I wonder if either they cut out more of her story or she's going to reappear later. Speaking of Fleabag, they should get Phoebe Waller-Bridge to write an episode, I'd love to see that.

Trinity65 · 24/06/2024 16:29

Loving all the theories.

I adore Mrs Flood simply because, lol, she has silver white hair. Just like mine now its grown out a fair bit.
Two girls at the bus stop and one said "Look its Mrs Flood".. Made me not despise the silver whiteness of it all now :)
PS I do not look like Anita Dobson (she has a longer jawline than Me and different eyes)but hey ho.

I do kind of agree but it also shows, imo, how a scared girl of only 15 might abandon her baby girl.
I thought it was lovely how they filmed that. I did wonder if she had said put RUBY on the cup, and she had :)

I just kind of assumed that time had passed since Rose does not pass for 15 at all. It’s a major flaw in the casting. So in my head cannon, that episode is at least 10 years post The Giggle to deal with the appearance and age disconnect.
