This will be my 12th Doctor. I’m a big Doctor Who fan. Happy memories of Sat with my dad watching cyber men and darleks.
But what the hell has happened? I’ve just finished, well I managed 25 mins, before I couldn’t take it anymore the 1st episode with the new Doctor and sidekick. Awful acting with a ludicrous plot (yes I know it’s fantasy) but it’s never been this stupid. Can’t help but think the BBC aren’t bothered and think they can put out anything and we’ll watch. Russell T Davies should have his pens taken off him and spare us anymore pain.

I can’t be the only Doctor Who fan who thinks like this. Absolutely Gutted 😞

Matt Smith was outstanding.

Which brings me back to something I either never understood, or have forgotten the explanation for. How is it that in episodes like The Girl in the Fireplace and The Eleventh Hour the TARDIS can misjudge time by month, years, decades - and yet last Saturday it arrived apparently exactly at the appointed time at UNIT?

Girl in the Fireplace wasn't the Tardis's fault IIRC, it was the glitchy mechanics of the fireplace itself.

SheilaFentiman · 17/06/2024 15:26

The TARDIS takes the Doctor to where he needs to go is the handwave 😀

prettybird · 17/06/2024 15:38

I wonder if the Doctor's regular tears will have some relevance to the story line? Confused

TripleDaisySummer · 17/06/2024 15:47

Expressing strong emotion is sufficiently part of NuWho Doctors that no one actor has to convince me of (ie earn) that.

I don't think he is convey strong emotion with his tears - it's more shortcut/ tell don't show -he's crying therefore must be feeling things strongly rather than giving just a look or face. So hoping there's more to it - a reason to do with water somehow.

Doctor Ruth had I think one episode where she went from middle age bit lost then scared women to a commanding hither to unknown incarceration of the doctor - in charge - and Jo Martin pulled it off seemingly effortlessly.

I used to think Ncuti Gatwa was a really good actor - though used to think Jodie Whittaker was a well - do think 73 yards showed Millie Gibson can act.

I staring to again think it's more than the writing now - clearly you don't.

SheilaFentiman · 17/06/2024 13:18

Given I’m quoting those three examples off the top of my head, not THAT new 😉

It's just how we are, though… I loved Capaldi, but dear fuck did he piss me off with the guitar-playing and sunglasses. Half expected him to trade in the TARDIS for an overpowered motorbike.

SheilaFentiman · 17/06/2024 18:08

Jodie Whittaker was excellent in Broadchurch. To an extent, whatever acting she did was selling Chibnall’s shtick and if you wrote her character to say things like “this is my fam” and you give her 3 companions which dilutes her screen time, then you tie her hands a bit.

I don’t think I have commented on the writing in the last few posts so I’m not sure what you mean there, @TripleDaisySummer but I’m making dinner so dropping off for now.

I totally dismissed Matt Smith because of his youth, but he had me completely after about ten minutes. Fish fingers and custard indeed

Edited

The Eleventh Hour from beginning to end was a masterpiece. It must be up there among one of the best introductions to a new Doctor there has been. It was in a large part due to Matt Smith, but also Steven Moffatt is IMO streets ahead in terms of inventive sci fi writing than RTD.
Re Ncuti, I think in the last 2 episodes, he's really come into his own. I've really enjoyed him and the stories. Hopefully the finale will be good and he can move on to a better next season. Its seemed a bit too short and its taken too long to get to now him, because there have been a couple of episodes hes hardly been in.

I’ve just watched this week’s episode… I’m not RTDs biggest fan by a long chalk and I’ve not really enjoyed this series other than 73 Yards, but I loved this week’s episode. Bloody cliffhanger though! I’ll be counting the minutes til next week now. Just hope it all wraps up nicely next week… First time I thought Ncuti really felt like the Doctor.

Exactly my thoughts and feelings

Really enjoyed 73 Yards and the one that was on Saturday.

In one of the specials last year Rose was crocheting (?) alien toys and selling them to a collector. I wonder if that plot point will be relevant next episode.

Would love for Mrs Flood to be related to the Ponds!

Thats an interesting theory

The surname certainly has to do with water, just like River Song and Amy Pond.
I forget the timeline but I do remember when Rory and Amy were sent back in Time by weeping angels the Doctor then saw their gravestone. I forgot the date.
Could she, Mrs Flood, possibly be a Granddaughter or Great Granddaughter of Rory and Amy I wonder ?

SheilaFentiman · 17/06/2024 22:58

Amy cannot have any more kids. She and Rory adopted a boy called Anthony (I think) who later found Brian (Rory’s dad)

There is a animated extra.

PuttingDownRoots · 17/06/2024 23:00

Unfortunately she can't be Amy's child or grandchild. Their adoptive son was born 1946 (Amy was left infertile) so the timelines don't add up, unless she's Rivers child.

SheilaFentiman · 17/06/2024 23:04

If Mrs Flood is 58 in 2024 (say) then she could just be Anthony’s daughter born when Anthony was 20?

SheilaFentiman · 17/06/2024 23:05

But that’s an underestimate of Mrs Flood’s age (AD is 75)

Unless there is some timey wimey stuff 😀

ladyflower23 · 17/06/2024 23:12

MollyRover · 17/06/2024 14:39

@ladyflower23 I get what you mean, but I don't remember when they realized it, apart from in this episode. It was like they'd been talking about it previously.

Oh I see what you mean! I remember them having a really quick, casual conversation about her in Dot & Bubble but it does seem like she's hardly been on their radar and quite random that they have now turned up to ask about her. Feels like there's a lot of stuff that's happened 'off camera' this season! Like most of their relationship. I think they need to do more than 8 episodes in a season really.

KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop · 18/06/2024 01:05

I read they were bringing an old character/villain back for this new series...the Ranii? Whoever that is, my money is on that being Mrs Floods real identity.

Let's face it, you don't bring Anita dobson in for a bit part!

beguilingeyes · 18/06/2024 06:39

Sutekh is an old villain. We watched Pyramids of Mars last night. Tom Baker and Lis Sladen. It's only four episodes. iPlayer. Having all of Dr Who there to summon at will is fantastic.

MollyRover · 18/06/2024 08:25

@ladyflower23 exactly!! I'm enjoying it apart from the cringy musical numbers at the beginning, I do love Ruby and The Doctor, think Millie and Ncuti are doing a great job but the character and relationship building is just missing. It takes time so it feels a bit forced for them to be besties already.

I believe the Beeb is showing an edited and more shiny version of Pyramids of Mars as part of the Tales of the TARDIS series on Thursday night (?). BBC4 and iPlayer I think - I'm going to watch it as while Tom Baker was my first doctor, I was a teeny tiny bit too young to watch this one when it was originally on. I think they've remastered it or something. Looks promising 😀

Rummikub · 18/06/2024 21:47

Do you think it’s linked to the finale somehow?

Do you think it’s linked to the finale somehow?

It sounds as though it is. Here's what they're saying about it on Digital Spy:
The new material in this Tales of the TARDIS will feature The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) pausing their epic battle against Sutekh to reflect on their travels thus far.Tales of the TARDIS's new scene will lead directly into this Saturday's (June 22) season 14 finale 'Empire of Death', where The Doctor and Ruby must stop Sutekh's evil plan.

Doctor Who airs game-changing villain twist in new episode

The One Who Waits has arrived...

KomproMatilda · 19/06/2024 09:04

So essentially it’s essential viewing if one wants to understand the finale properly?

Hmph …

Rummikub · 19/06/2024 12:54

That’s Thursday night viewing sorted. Anyone know what time?
im going to the pictures to watch finale.

JaninaDuszejko · 19/06/2024 13:33

In 73 yards Ruby says to the hitchhiker 'don't I know you from somewhere' and the Doctor and Ruby have a brief conversation in Rogue about her when they see the portrait (or possibly just one recognises her, can't remember). Since the ambulance in Boom they've noticed her each episode.
