Got a day off today so I’m binging Baby Reindeer. Two episodes in and it’s great so far, I see that it’s previously been a stage show but I’ve never heard of it so looking forward to finding out what happens. It’s about a comedian being stalked by a woman in her 40s.

Wasn't the sex scene with Martha I'm his imagination?

Yes I thought it was in his imagination. It wasn't clear.

TheExclusiveSandwich · 14/04/2024 16:18

You’re right. I know I shouldn’t be blaming him but so much of it seems inexplicable.

Why don’t you just walk away from her by the canal? Why didn’t he just block her email?

I think, to be fair, she emailed from many email addresses. No? Again, I could be wrong.
I don't remember having watched anything quite like this before. It was brilliant.

unwatchthread · 14/04/2024 16:23

So the bit where he goes to hers and they have sex.. was that real or imagined?

FedUpMumof10YO · 14/04/2024 16:35

It was his imagination. He was thinking of Martha while having sex with Teri

Flapearedknave · 14/04/2024 16:40

lul1 · 13/04/2024 23:22

And he wrote it. Makes it worse. He kreeps me out.

The original writer lived it. It's based on his experience.

Flapearedknave · 14/04/2024 16:48

I thought it was brilliantly done. It really moved me, in a way theatre usually does, which is interesting considering that's how it originally was written.

The victim blaming here is quite sad to read.

@slavetoloverhythm

I am an empathic and understanding person. But there are limits.
It's not like he's an abused woman with kids, forced to stay with a man. He chose to go back. In the end, he couldn't cope as he needed to get his ego kick from somewhere.
I appreciate this won't be a popular view, but there we are.

It sounds insane but I think that many people can actually convince themselves that something isn't abusive. Even that gross first scene in Episode 4, one could convince themselves that they gave off the signals for that to happen.

I think back to the multiple awful situations with men and casual hook ups in my youth which were actually self abuse. And some awful behaviour many of my friends and I condoned. All of us pretty intelligent yet thought some hideous sex related behaviour was ok to go back to. Twenty plus years later we often talk about this and reflect how on earth it happened.🤷‍♀️

Appreciate this show is the absolute extreme end.

TheExclusiveSandwich · 14/04/2024 17:35

yeah I think that is right about youth and naivety

Looking back i just CRINGE at who I was

I like to convince myself i would be an ice queen if I dated again but you know

Nellieinthebarn · 14/04/2024 17:40

It was very dark and compelling, and I think its the best thing I've seen this year so far.

WhatsTheProblemSarah · 14/04/2024 18:16

I've just started watching and thought there might be a thread on it. I think the point of him in a glass is the concept of him feeling trapped.

On a side note, I wish people would include spoiler alerts. I'm one episode in and one of the first comments on here is "I'm glad xxx had a happy ending". Admittedly I was taking a risk reading a thread about it but I was keen to see what others thought.

WhatsTheProblemSarah · 14/04/2024 18:27

It's really well done. My only criticism I guess is that most people would have shut her down 10x over by the end of the first episode.

Yes there's no way I could have endured a whole working shift with this person there day after day.

I loved it, the episode where he tells his parents everything had me weeping.

i did find it interesting from a man’s POV and I didn’t really know what to think about some of the really poor decisions he made (WRT Martha, not the older guy). Also made me think that women being stalked would have probably ended up dead if they’d made some of those same decisions were they being stalked.

Excellent watch though, they were all amazing actors. I’d seen the actress who played Martha in something else and I can’t think what?

She was in the movie Pride, maybe you saw that?

lul1 · 14/04/2024 21:59

I noticed I put a K in creeps earlier.

I really can't take to him. He's full of himself.

oberst · 14/04/2024 22:06

This was incredible. I think it's one of the best things I've watched in a while.

I can't believe he has written and produced this (and his Edinburgh fringe things) alongside playing himself; surely that's got to be hard going through those scenes of sexual abuse etc?

And brilliant as the person "in charge" of the community service in The Outlaws...amazing sense of comic timing in that.

I didn't find him full of himself. The opposite in fact, as he needs so much validation from others.
Still, our differences of opinion are what make this chat so interesting! Smile

Neveralonewithaclone · 12/04/2024 16:12

I'm watching it, it's very strange / compelling. As a fat person I'm wondering why she has to be fat? Obviously fat actresses should work too and she's exceptionally good. But, I don't know, would they have had a relationship if she wasn't?? 🤔 Is it part of why he doesn't want to have a relationship with her despite the fact that he does like her to an extent?

Its based on a true story so perhaps im.assuming its the closed fit to the actual person

SpikeGilesSandwich · 14/04/2024 22:18

Yes, I spent a lot of the show thinking, "For goodness sake, why would you do that?!" but if you made a film about my own early twenties, you'd definitely be screaming that at the screen. Some of the things I let happen and situations I went back to are completely irrational and excruciating embarrassing, now I look back. (Which I try not to tbh)
It was a very brave series and deserves to win some awards.

JMSA · 14/04/2024 22:20

Regarding Jessica Gunning (Martha) and what else she's starred in, I saw her in a BBC (?) drama series a few years back. It was called What Remains.

oberst · 14/04/2024 22:24

I've just done some reading and apparently they have actually chosen a woman who wasn't at all like his stalker in real life (looks wise). Which is interesting.

Starlightstarbright3 · 14/04/2024 22:32

I found it dark and compelling .

i had to watch bake off after for some relief .

i think he screamed of vulnerable and think I can get after watching the end how he became so embroiled in the whole thing .

Reading the thread has made me decide to just leave it half way through episode 3! Really wasn't enjoying it.
