Another new drama wirh good old ch5

50/50 if will be good or cheese 😂

The Cuckoo is a four-part series will start on Channel 5 at 9pm on Monday April 8 2024, with episodes running across the week from Monday to Thursday April 11 at the same time.

Episodes will also arrive on streaming service My5 (https://www.whattowatch.com/watching-guides/best-channel-5-dramas-all-the-must-see-tv-shows-to-watch-on-my5)

The Cuckoo kicks off with married couple Nick (Lee Ingleby) and Jessica (Claire Goose) having just bought the house of their dreams, a grand doer-upper in the country town where Jessica grew up.

But as the financial crisis hits, the couple fall on hard times and risk losing their beautiful home. With no other choice, they take in lodger Sian (Jill Halfpenny), who very quickly begins to start trouble in the family, flirting with Nick, borrowing Jessica’s clothes and building an inappropriate rapport with their adopted daughter Alice.

Jessica soon realises something dark and twisted is going on, and before long the pair must fight for one another and to save their own lives.

The Cuckoo is a tense Channel 5 thriller series starring Jill Halfpenny as a lodger who forces her way into the lives of her host family.

She plays Sian, a beautiful but mysterious woman who moves in with hard-up couple Nick (Lee Ingleby) and Jessica (Claire Goose) and their adopted daughter.

But as she oversteps the boundaries time and time again, Jessica starts to wonder if there’s more to Sian than meets the eye...

Jill Halfpenny says: "Viewers will know quite quickly what Sian wants, but I think the show then becomes about whether she manages to succeed — that’s the thrill of it.

Nick and Jessica have already made their worst move letting Sian into the house. The minute she’s inside, she can start messing with their minds. People will be shouting at the telly!"

I’m just bypassing all the comments on here as I’ve only watched the first episode.

It seems unrealistic already. A family moved to the country from London to a big farmhouse, yet wanted a random lodger to move in when they have a young teenage daughter?

I just don’t buy it.

Money worries

We've just watched it all. Not the worse one of that genre we've ever seen but certainly not the best. Jill Halfpenny definitely getting typecast in those sort of roles now. It was clunky and a bit formulaic but like most of these things it pulled you in just to see how it pans out.

Certainly wasn't as bad as the Kara Tointon one, now that really was rubbish.

Ooh thank you. Will find that!

I'm watching this now.
I've just seen Episode 1
There's no way on God's earth I would let a stranger waltz into my home and allow them to stay

I guessed why well before the end.

DaisyMabel · 14/10/2024 15:48

poor Jill, isn’t this the exact same plot of the drowning? Where her child was dead but she was convinced she’d found him and he was alive.

FedUpMumof10YO · 14/10/2024 19:30

I watched half of episode one and the acting is utterly dire.

Claire Goose is such a good actress usually along with Jill and that chap is usually great.

But this is just awful. I decided to give up.

Just seen this on Netflix.

It was nice to binge watch something but I agree, the storyline wasn’t the best😂

I also like Lee Ingleby , he is very attractive in an odd kind of way

He's good in everything he does. A very underrated actor. Possibly likes to just keep working and flying under the radar. He can probably go about his day unrecognised, which must be rare.

One thing that’s annoying me: she wouldn’t have a tenancy agreement, she’s a lodger.

I've done tenancy agreements through agents with lodgers before. It's quite common.

purpleme12 · 27/10/2024 08:01

You didn't do a lodger agreement?

StMarieforme · 27/10/2024 08:40

purpleme12 · 27/10/2024 08:01

You didn't do a lodger agreement?

Aimed at Lodging but still referred to as a Tenancy agreement colloquially which is probably what I and the writer meant 😊
Lord this was rubbish! If only they'd not mentioned 2007 it would have been ok! Sian's mum disowned her after she got pregnant? Surely she disowned her for hanging round with lads when she was 32?!! 🤣🤣🤣

OrangesLemonsLimes · 01/07/2025 21:47

Just viewed this on Netflix and it’s one of the worst things I’ve watched in a long time. I get that not everything is going to be Dexter or Breaking Bad, and I’m happy to watch frothy nonsense when I’m in the mood, but this really was exceptionally poor. That awkward, gurning child, Jill Halfpenny pretending to be 32, the father with no redeeming features whatsoever, the wooden detective, the aunt with the changeable accent.
Claire Goose did well with a mediocre formulaic script as the wronged wife, and the house interior was interesting. That’s about all I can say that’s positive. What a mess.
