6 part drama - on Sunday and Monday x 3w

Set in a fictional town called Chadder Vale, the six-part series explores an insular community that shares a real distrust of outsiders.

Five years before the drama begins, former Met police detective Riya Ajunwa (Wunmi Mosaku) arrives in town and has been waiting for a proper crime to investigate ever since.

Then, one night a local girl called Katie Wells (Rowan Robinson) disappears. Weird. What’s weirder is that the next day she reappears, seemingly totally fine.

The inhabitants of the town remain unbothered, but Detective Riya thinks the whole thing is a bit… odd.

From there, a “series of strange happenings and increasingly shocking crimes” begins to unfold.

The townspeople blame outside influences, such as the fracking site and its manager, Jim Bracknell (David Threlfall), but Riya is insistent that something else is going on, a view that gets a lot of the locals riled up. Sounds mysterious, right?

Leading the charge in Passenger is Wunmi Mosaku, who you may know from Loki, Damilola, Lovecraft Country, Alice Darling, and Temple. Here, she plays the lead role of Detective Riya Ajunwa.

Also in the cast are David Threlfall (Shameless, Funny Woman), Rowan Robinson (So Awkward), Jo Hartley (After Life, In My Skin), Sean Gilder (The Gold, Shameless) and Debbie Rush (Coronation Street, Brassic).

Just mentioned that it’s recommended by the Radio Times this week. It says episode one is quite a lot of moody scene setting.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/03/2024 14:40

Starts tonight

Missing ladder

And why did the lorry driver wear a gas mask /infrared mask

martinisforeveryone · 24/03/2024 21:53

I’m intrigued by the title. I thought there were going to be some kind of trafficked people in the bread van, not that it’s near the channel ports.

Here’s an article with location info https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/tv/itv-passenger-locations-chadder-vale-28858518

It had the feeling of a Canadian backwater town to me.

Where ITV's Passenger was filmed, real life locations and where is Chadder Vale

The new ITV thriller was shot across the north west

What do people think? It's strange I don't really get it. Whens it set? Seems dated.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/03/2024 22:10

I like it. I'm about 15m behind so haven't seen end yet

But def weird the missing girl from car is the let out prisoner daughter /steps daughter

Ihavetoomuchtodo · 24/03/2024 22:20

I think it is set now? But seems dated, the computer game??
It got better at the end.

Netaporter · 24/03/2024 22:30

It was written by Andrew Buchan the actor. It was a bit chaotic as an opening episode I thought. Vibes of fortitude with the black goo going on. Will stick with it.

For some reason they’ve taken a leaf out of the Sex Education playbook and made some bits really dated like the cars, factory office etc.

Agree the bread truck looked like trafficking vehicle.

Ihavetoomuchtodo · 24/03/2024 22:37

Yes the police car looked like it was from the 80s? It made me think of Stranger Things.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/03/2024 22:38

David Threlfall will always be frank to me

Looked weird with lots of hair 😂

I did enjoy tonight's

Def enjoyable and spooky/mysterious

The woods looks scary

Wonder what the blood stain is in the lorry cages and exploding in the lab

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 24/03/2024 22:43

It's supposed to be evocative of Stranger Things

purpleme12 · 24/03/2024 22:43

It was certainly different.

Very creepy. Not sure I want to watch this at 9 o clock at night 🤣

Clawdy · 24/03/2024 23:21

MrsLargeEmbodied · 25/03/2024 05:53

E1 recap

You all know I love a recap

martinisforeveryone · 25/03/2024 11:43

What are people most intrigued by?

What fell on the bonnet of the car?
Why did Katie leave an incapacitated Mehmet in the cold, dark and a damaged car?

Two girls have been missing and return without explanation?

What was the goo from the bread lorry and the stag?

Did the bread lorry bring bread back to the factory? Who was in there and how did they escape? Why the need for a gas mask? And the need to trust the driver for the deliveries, what’s really the truth of that?

What did Eddie do?

What is the trauma from Riya’s past?

Another thing, the radio report that it’s unusually cold and yet the snow doesn’t stick? There looked to be plenty underfoot to me.

One review frames it as Twin Peaks meets Happy Valley. I can’t make up my mind if it’s a bit surreal for me.

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/03/2024 12:17

The black stuff reminds me of the black oil in x files

I'm assuming some kind of creature (passenger) as on the bread lorry but escaped leaving the black blood /goo

I wondered about the gas mask

Maybe the monster /creature leapt onto her car and obv killed /ate the deer

I wouldn't go into those woods alone. Daylight or dark !!!

Not sure what Eddie had done - something the whole town seems to hate him for but obv the wife (jo) still likes him as in her house

Not sure the daughters impressed with him

OP posts:
Blondeshavemorefun · 25/03/2024 12:18

Yes maybe the cold has something to do with it

Daughter has a cough

Is that linked

OP posts:
butterpuffed · 25/03/2024 13:03

I quite like creepy things and this reminds me of Twin Peaks but at least I understood that series . Too many unanswered questions in this for me .

martinisforeveryone · 25/03/2024 13:27

There was a radio report of a cat with a cough.

Kane saying 'we're ready for you now' and the title The Passenger lead me to think who or whatever's in that van is human, but the goo and the laboratory and the mysterious cough and references to strange weather make me think it's some kind of organism or virus.

Whatever Eddie did do seems to have had a wide impact on a lot of people and a ten year sentence is quite steep. Jim at the fracking site calls him 'a monster' and says he's lost his family. Whether that means they died or whether they left and he's estranged from them wasn't made clear.

Strange animal noises in the woods don't frighten me, they're just par for the course, but I never understand why people leave a vehicle in the middle of nowhere rather than wait for help, or go wandering alone, in the dark, through woods and isolated areas. That's far too creepy for me.

I wonder if the code at the end of Mehmet's game is going to be seen through the programme?
