Is this how people from Leeds talk or unique to Ellie and Izzie (Gogglebox)

darkchocolatecoffee · 18/03/2024 20:09

I’m referring to those sisters off Gogglebox (Ellie and Izzie).

When they have a conversation, they continuously repeat the subject matter. Example (not a real one) but just to explain what I mean:

Ellie: did you see the sausage roll at Auntie Margaret’s house the other day?

Izzie: no I didn’t see the sausage roll at Auntie Margaret’s house… did she have a sausage roll there? I love a sausage roll but I always try and get one from the local bakery but they never have the sausage rolls there. Auntie Margaret just loves her sausage rolls but I need my sausage rolls to have enough meat, I do.

I’m not sure if I’m explaining it well but I’m just curious is this way of talking unique to these sisters or is it more of a local way of speaking?

We love Gogglebox. Love Jenny and Lee, The Siddiquis, The Malone's, Tremaine, Twain and Tristan.

I cannot abide Sophie and Pete. They are so fake and nasty to people. I hate the way he dives on the sofa all the time.

ApricotLime · 20/03/2024 11:24

I don't find Amira and Amani or Roisin and Joe's jokes that funny.

SlackAlice1 · 20/03/2024 13:25

Tremaine, Wayne and Dwayne are very dull.

As are the mother and son - her with the really whiny voice. Think the son is called Seb?

DillDanding · 20/03/2024 14:26

Amira and Amani (and their nasal voices) are very dull. I think they should replace them.

itsnotabouthepasta · 20/03/2024 15:02

I love Ellie and Izzy - I'd love to know what Aunty Jane thinks of them haha. I actually genuinely think they have forgotten that they cameras are there, and they would genuinely have the same chats by themselves.

I adore the Siddiquis. In Richard Osman's podcast, he mentioned them a few weeks ago - said something about how there had been a tweet asking if it was possible to name three men that you'd be comfortable being alone in a room with, and how he thought the only possible reply was "the Siddiqui family from Gogglebox" - what a lovely way to describe them actually.

I like Simon and his sister (I also can't remember his name) and the welsh couple - I think they are hilarious.

I'm not a fan of Ronnie and his wife who always has to hold his hand, nor the new mum and son but they'll find their way.

I agree that Georgia and Abby (from Durham) are daft as a brush but I think that not everyone has the same level of intellect, and also they both seem so incredibly sweet and kindhearted. I'd much rather see "nice but dim" people than "intelligent arseholes" any day.

Begsthequestion · 20/03/2024 16:26

The way Giles says "isn't it Mary" after almost every statement.

Drives me batty. I could not live with that. I'd have to leave and change my name 😆

He probably started it out of insecurity because she's quiet and now does it to wind her up.

Maybe she tunes him out, idk.

PS no I don't think that's a Leeds thing, op! It's more like nattering imo.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 20/03/2024 16:29

🤦‍♀️ Is this serious?.You do know they are given scripts?
I'm near Leeds.. and no we don't.

darkchocolatecoffee · 20/03/2024 16:43

Yes it’s serious, some regions have certain ways of talking. Of course I’m not suggesting everyone in Leeds speaks in exactly the same way, but I wondered if this repetitive way of talking is just a ‘them’ thing or common to their region.

How do you know they are given scripts? @PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance

@SlackAlice1 yes I think the son is called Seb… doesn’t look like they’re fan favourites just yet!

They're not given scripts. Sometimes the producers will suggest jokes if the goggleboxers can't think what to say, but other than that it's not scripted.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 20/03/2024 16:54

They're all annoying. Pete and Sophie both think they're hilarious.

Nope, I like those. At least they don't speak rubbish.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 20/03/2024 16:56

Most of the people on Gogglebox they could probably do with replacing. I liked the posh couple with the dachshund who are long gone!

Pete has definitely lucked out with his wife (who probably fancied him more because he was on the telly), I just can't stand the way they're oh so superior, funny, hilarious.

Sophie, it was quite amusing when she lost her job over lockdown and it really affected her, definitely not the irritating smuggins she was/is before/now.

I find most of them do this.
I watch Mary & Giles and cannot believe she hasn’t battered him to death.
I’ve stopped watching it now though.
Mist if them annoy me.
The couple from Wales are awful.
The 2 young women who sit on the grey sofa, they sound very unintelligent.
I used to like the family with all the dogs, especially Dave the dog. I used to think do they ever eat those cakes? And why are they left out where the dogs can lick them?
The Siddiquis come across as intelligent.

Have you heard the story of how she tried to kill him by shutting the door and spraying air freshener through the keyhole?! I know violence should never be funny, nor poisoning blah blah blah, but I was crying laughing at that. He is intolerable.

Edited

Yes, she cried when she lost her job. Not sure what's amusing about that.

I'm not saying it's amusing - it's because she's irritating and seems to think she's so great generally that it was quite funny that she wasn't the Ms Irreplaceable she thought she was.

DillDanding · 20/03/2024 17:13

I really like Pete and Sophie. I think he is very funny. He and the Siddiquis are the ones that make us laugh out loud.

We must have different tastes. Pete thinks he's very funny which isn't the same as actually being very funny.

The Siddiquis are bland as hell and quite a dry sense of humour but I forgive them that because the dad is sweet.

UnbelievablySelfish · 20/03/2024 17:58

Pete and Sophie are very quick witted, as are the Siddiquis. They’re just so well-informed, and they seem comfortable in each others’ company. Same with Amira & sister. And Tremaine, Twaine etc. I find it soothing watching functioning relationships.

The West country know-all patronising woman and her son have yet to come up with something interesting to say between them. That Welsh woman - we really really really (well I don’t) don’t want to think about you having sex. Urgh. <Shudders.> I’m sure he (the husband) tries to cover up his embarrassment at her dimness. He steps in quickly sometimes when she just doesn’t assimilate.

The Durham girls. Fascinating, in a way. The one with auburn hair is definitely a few IQ points down from the new mum.
I swear she said “is Russia a real country?” Once. (Something like that anyway.)
The other one just cackled. It was a brilliant cackle though.

UnbelievablySelfish · 20/03/2024 18:02

Oh and I like Giles and Mary, but then I love Bertie Wooster. I didn’t hear Mary comment about the rough sleeper keeping warm by riding buses.
I’m disappointed in her for that.

It wasn't a rough sleeper but a pensioner as I remember it.

darkchocolatecoffee · 20/03/2024 18:31

Yes I also like Pete and Sophie’s quick wit and sibling dynamic - so we must all have different taste.

i didn’t know the Mary air freshener story 😂

Auburn Durham girl - yes I think she also didn’t know who the prime minister was…

I love the Siddiquis!

Me too! Very quick witted - especially daddy Siddiqui. 🌹
