Is this how people from Leeds talk or unique to Ellie and Izzie (Gogglebox)

I’m referring to those sisters off Gogglebox (Ellie and Izzie).

When they have a conversation, they continuously repeat the subject matter. Example (not a real one) but just to explain what I mean:

Ellie: did you see the sausage roll at Auntie Margaret’s house the other day?

Izzie: no I didn’t see the sausage roll at Auntie Margaret’s house… did she have a sausage roll there? I love a sausage roll but I always try and get one from the local bakery but they never have the sausage rolls there. Auntie Margaret just loves her sausage rolls but I need my sausage rolls to have enough meat, I do.

I’m not sure if I’m explaining it well but I’m just curious is this way of talking unique to these sisters or is it more of a local way of speaking?

I echo a lot of the views on here - the welsh lady is very closed minded. Georgie and Abby (?) on the gray sofa from Newcastle are very unintelligent- my partner is always is disbelief at how thick they are but I tell him they may be doing an act for the camera (let’s hope…)

The Siddiquis do come across as genuine so I’m glad to hear they were likeable IRL too.

Simon and his sister - yes they’re two good newish additions.

@Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions the cakes just sitting there while the dogs are roaming around bothers me too! I’ve never seen anyone eat them, they just sit there…

@Lifeinlists yes I definitely am not suggesting these sisters are representing Leeds in any way. It was more the way they talk - I was wondering if it’s a regional way of speaking. Sounds like it isn’t!

I always thought they were trying to be like the Royle Family when they do the repeating thing - aka The Golden Egg Cup!

NCForQuestions · 19/03/2024 10:21

I pray the two lasses from Newcastle are hamming it up for the camera. I cannot, truly cannot, believe how thick they appear to be. And now there's kids and dogs in the mix and they have responsibilities for them?! Christ on a bike.

Giles and Mary are great. Amazed they tolerate each other though, very odd dynamic!

Amira and Amani seem like nice ladies, but they don't really SPEAK! I'd like to hear from them.

The Plummer brothers absolutely crack me up and are probably my favourites at the moment.

And I actually really miss Mary and Marina (the old ladies from Bristol). We need another group of much older friends like them again. They are my favs of all time.

awaynboilyurheid · 19/03/2024 10:59

Mary of Mary and Giles is an odd one, she barely tolerates him and can be quite cold but the minute the late queen or royalty was on she'd be crying buckets most odd!
Cannot stand the Glasgow couple (and I say that as a Glaswegian)but thankfully they have stopped swearing quite so much!
Like the Siddiques and Pete and his little sister Sophie are hilariously quick witted.

mydogisthebest · 19/03/2024 11:02

They are so annoying but then so are almost all of the people on gogglebox. The brother and sister are awful.

They all over act so much it's a joke. I don't believe anyone watches tv and talks all the time and/or makes such exaggerated faces and noises

Yes. It was pointed out that when there was a news story about a pensioner travelling around on a bus to keep warm she was very hard hearted in her response. "It's not Boris's fault." But she cries easily over the Royals. I'd forgotten about that.

Yes. That's why I like it. It reminds me of the Royles. (Different city I know)

Blackcats7 · 19/03/2024 11:21

I just really want to see Auntie Margaret.

SallyWD · 19/03/2024 11:32

I live in Leeds and no one speaks like that.

TheMurderousGoose · 19/03/2024 11:35

Pete and Sophie get on my flippin' nerves. Cannot bloody stand their honking laughs.

Exactly.

I find most of them do this.
I watch Mary & Giles and cannot believe she hasn’t battered him to death.
I’ve stopped watching it now though.
Mist if them annoy me.
The couple from Wales are awful.
The 2 young women who sit on the grey sofa, they sound very unintelligent.
I used to like the family with all the dogs, especially Dave the dog. I used to think do they ever eat those cakes? And why are they left out where the dogs can lick them?
The Siddiquis come across as intelligent.

🙄🙄

darkchocolatecoffee · 19/03/2024 13:18

@NCForQuestions I know, I was shocked to see there was a baby in the mix too 😱

I like Ellie and Izzie and I think a lot of people across the country have a sort of daft banter with family members and they do ham it up for the TV. I have that sort of daft conversation about sausage rolls in front of the TV with my mum*. Good luck to them.

*My mum still talks about that day we went in one Greggs and had a vegetable pasty. Then walked to the other end of the high street and found another branch of Greggs and decided we were still hungry and got another one each. <applies to Gogglebox>

And I'm not from Leeds!

A program for people to watch people watching TV. Oh dear.

It really isn't just that.

No need to deride it just because you don't like it.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 19/03/2024 13:42

TinselSniffer · 19/03/2024 09:27

I sometimes talk this way for comic effect with my mom and dh.

I can't stand Jenny and Lee or the thick Welsh woman. I like everyone else, especially the Siddiqis, and I for one am glad that Stephen has left and taken his spiteful comments with him.

Ironic.

Deathraystare · 19/03/2024 16:08

I love the Siddiquis, Jenny and Lee (especially if he tells her something and she does not realise it is a joke!), The Manchester ones with Dave the dog - the way the husband always looks askance at wife Julie. I like the three black brothers but you don't get to see them much.

Funnily enough - the two friends from ??Durham? I thought the one on the right was the real thick one but just lately she has been surpassed by the one on the left! Bloody hell she is a thicko!

The two Moslem girls are very saucy at times and funny about their mum!

Love Pete and Sophie especially when she calls him 'Pedro'.

BoringBoris · 19/03/2024 16:17

I knew Ellie in real life before the show (in fact I didn't realise it was here at 1st). Not personally she was a hairdresser.
She was like that in real life- 100% full on talk.

MorrisZapp · 19/03/2024 16:23

It's my favourite hour of the week! So warm and comforting, and it saves me having to watch eg Saltburn. I love Ellie and her sister.

UraniumArthur · 19/03/2024 16:25

I think a lot of the long-termers have slowly exaggerated their quirks for the camera.

Ellie and Izzie definately 'up' their repetetive way of speaking and food obsession.

Lee and Jenny definately 'up' their practical jokes and her crying at TV things. Ditto Mary who also does that same fake/forced cry at stuff more and more these days.

Love the Siddiquis
and Pete and Sophie
and Tremaine, Twaine and Tristan

monicagellerbing · 19/03/2024 16:32

@darkchocolatecoffee the two girls are from Durham not Newcastle

darkchocolatecoffee · 19/03/2024 17:10

@monicagellerbing ah ok got it, and again no disrespect to Durham. They have a fantastic university which more than compensates for the two friends.

yes I also like Tremaine, Twaine and Tristan!

There was a couple back in the day - quite posh and constantly drinking… I can’t remember their names but they were funny at times.

I heard there is a clause in the Gogglebox contract where you can’t take advantage of any other media opportunities and Gogglebox doesn’t pay a lot which is why some of the regulars leave. I think this is possibly why Mica & Marcus and Stephen left

MoonWoman69 · 19/03/2024 17:21

Steph and Dom were the drinkers! I used to howl at their antics! I also love Simon and his sister Jane. The new mother and son bring nothing to the show to me. And I always actually wonder what Ellie and Izzies families think of them always discussing them and sometimes not in a good light!
It's come a long way from where it started, a few characters died, some of them were quite a shock.
We save a few shows up and then have a catch up binge when there's nothing else on!

darkchocolatecoffee · 19/03/2024 18:37

Ah yes Steph and Dom!

Agreed about the mother and son. Also feel that way about the family with the parents and daughter where the mum is knitting.

We often think that about Ellie and Izzie too - they are often rude about their close family on a broadcast tv show! Maybe their family have that kind of dynamic where no offence is taken
