Is this how people from Leeds talk or unique to Ellie and Izzie (Gogglebox)

I’m referring to those sisters off Gogglebox (Ellie and Izzie).

When they have a conversation, they continuously repeat the subject matter. Example (not a real one) but just to explain what I mean:

Ellie: did you see the sausage roll at Auntie Margaret’s house the other day?

Izzie: no I didn’t see the sausage roll at Auntie Margaret’s house… did she have a sausage roll there? I love a sausage roll but I always try and get one from the local bakery but they never have the sausage rolls there. Auntie Margaret just loves her sausage rolls but I need my sausage rolls to have enough meat, I do.

I’m not sure if I’m explaining it well but I’m just curious is this way of talking unique to these sisters or is it more of a local way of speaking?

erm well i'm from Leeds and i don't speak like that neither is it a familiar way of speaking to me

pizzaHeart · 18/03/2024 22:51

I thought that it’s their personal siblings banter.

SlackAlice1 · 18/03/2024 22:53

I think they’re playing up their way of speaking for comic effect.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 18/03/2024 23:31

Yes me too. They weren’t like this when they first started - it’s been exaggerated as the series have gone on.

In fact one of the main reasons I don’t enjoy Gogglebox as much any more is that they all do this in a way, but repeating what’s just been said on the TV. Eg:
TV: The great white shark pursues its prey.
Goggleboxer 1: Ooh a great white shark
Goggleboxer 2: Pursuing its prey.

There’s far too much cutting back and forth from TV screen to G’boxers, with really obvious things being said, basically just a repetition of what we can see and hear ourselves. The only ones that don’t do it are the Siddiquis.

ApricotLime · 18/03/2024 23:35

I have noticed it. I like it.

MoonWoman69 · 19/03/2024 00:27

Definitely not how we talk in Leeds. Both my DH and I find it irritating when they do this and we both say "who the hell talks like that?!" I don't know anyone that does IRL! Annoying!

VapeHelp · 19/03/2024 00:35

Nah, they’re hamming it up. You can imagine a cockney or scouser or any other strong accent saying the same sort of thing, it’s just a bit of a general affliction for comedic effect.

Anyone know whereabouts in Leeds they grew up? I’ve lived here a long time and not heard an accent that daft.

This was their primary school if that helps. St Theresa's

I love the Siddiquis!

I remembered that Izzy’s fella had that awful accident near his local pub, East Leeds. I’ve never lived that side, maybe the accent is a lot stronger!

HoHoHoliday · 19/03/2024 01:06

They definitely act up for the TV! No one actually talks like that.
I loved gogglebox when it first launched because it was just normal people watching TV. The entertainment came from watching people react in the same way you might react and they were sometimes funny.
Now everyone on there (including these sisters) knows they have an audience and acts up for extra attention, to build their profile.
It's boring now, I gave up watching.

I love the Siddiquis!

Yes, they're very likeable. Stephen was hilarious and Pete and Sophie. I like Giles and Mary.

Frances0911 · 19/03/2024 01:28

I find them really annoying. Especially the constant talking about food, not to mention the exaggerated accent.

darkchocolatecoffee · 19/03/2024 06:56

Yes and one of the sisters is constantly putting the other down, refusing to share food etc

I agree, the show started out with normal people not people over trying to make a name for themselves. It’s still watchable for me but it’s definitely declined in quality.

My personal favourites are Pete and Sophie, and Giles and Mary. I miss Stephen (Brighton)!

A program for people to watch people watching TV. Oh dear.

TheAverageJoanne · 19/03/2024 07:45

Gogglebox is fake and scripted, full of people who want to be zelebs. One of them even made it onto Dancing on Ice until he broke his foot. Steven somebody. It's like watching paint dry!

I love the Siddiquis!

They have always been the best apart from June and Leon (RIP).

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 19/03/2024 08:06

I find most of them do this.
I watch Mary & Giles and cannot believe she hasn’t battered him to death.
I’ve stopped watching it now though.
Mist if them annoy me.
The couple from Wales are awful.
The 2 young women who sit on the grey sofa, they sound very unintelligent.
I used to like the family with all the dogs, especially Dave the dog. I used to think do they ever eat those cakes? And why are they left out where the dogs can lick them?
The Siddiquis come across as intelligent.

PiggyPlumPie · 19/03/2024 08:31

I met the Siddiqui sons before a race in Derby last year and they were indeed lovely!

Running again on Sunday so might see them again.

SlackAlice1 · 19/03/2024 08:32

I absolutely love Simon and his sister (sorry Simon’s sister I can’t remember your name).

TinselSniffer · 19/03/2024 09:27

I sometimes talk this way for comic effect with my mom and dh.

I can't stand Jenny and Lee or the thick Welsh woman. I like everyone else, especially the Siddiqis, and I for one am glad that Stephen has left and taken his spiteful comments with him.

Lifeinlists · 19/03/2024 09:30

Not all people from Leeds sound like them or are as annoying. Just saying.

DillDanding · 19/03/2024 09:35

I love Gogglebox but think there’s a lot of ‘performance’ for the camera. So much stating the bleeding obvious and unnecessary commenting. But then it would be dull if they sat watching in silence.

I can’t stand those 2 young women, one is Georgia and they are in Durham, I think. Both as thick as mince.

I love the Siddiquis and their dry wit. Pete (with Sophie) is also very funny. I find Giles so repugnant - his has Mary not bludgeoned him to death?

SignoraVolpe · 19/03/2024 09:38

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/03/2024 07:58

They have always been the best apart from June and Leon (RIP).

I found Leon a bit creepy. I liked June though.

The Siddiquis strike me as the most genuine and intelligent.

I remember the Leeds sisters watching Lady Chatterley’s Lover and one commented it’s like something out of a book!
D H Lawrence obviously unknown to them.

MaggieFS · 19/03/2024 09:47

I really like Gogglebox, but I agree too many of the people, especially the younger ones are all a bit samey. Not as good as the old days with Scarlett and Dom and ?

Totally forgotten their names, but the friends from Hull, Jenny and ? They haven't changed and she's so funny how she misremembers names and events. The Siddiquis are great and I also like the Malones.

Overall, I think it's fabulous to see that regardless of background, financial situation, geography, people by and large have a common set of decent standards and values. I often think politicians should try out new ideas via gogglebox to get true reactions.
