A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis story.

I am really looking forward to this. This particular case (and miscarriage of justice IMO) has long since been a personal obsession of mine.
If Ruth had committed this crime in recent times, she wouldn’t even have had a custodial sentence (thankfully CP long abolished) - David Blakely was extremely mentally, verbally and physically abusive towards Ruth. He apparently caused her to miscarry just weeks before the incident. So it’s beyond question the balance of her mind was affected.
In the few post production photos I’ve seen, it looks gorgeous & I am sure Lucy Boynton will do Ruth justice. Perfect casting.
No date yet, but I was hoping it might be in the Easter TV schedules? Especially as Ruth shot David on Easter Sunday, so the the timing would be very apt:

Can't wait for tonight either. I'm going to watch the first two as well.

I'm watching it now. I don't know anything about the case, but Ruth comes across as very unpleasant so I can't say I have much sympathy for her.

I can’t comment on how RE comes across in this drama as won’t be watching until this evening.
In the meantime, I suggest reading up on the case. A brilliant book, ‘A fine day for a hanging’ by Carol Ann Lee is the best IMO - and the TV drama was based on this book.
RE had a pretty shitty life - sexually abusive father, abusive ex husband and abusive BF (the one she killed)
I would imagine she perhaps came across as a cold and hard unfeeling person as an act of ‘self preservation’ - a protective shell.
It was reported that she showed no emotion in the immediate aftermath of the shooting - shock I would think.
Perhaps withhold judgement until you’ve actually read up about Ruth properly?

All I would like to add is don't believe everything read which this series is based on. Unfortunately, there was a lot more to Ruth than meets the eye. The only person who truly knew her and shielded her from an abusive father taking the brunt was her sister Muriel.

I just had to look up how old Ruth was because I thought the actress was too young. She was only 28! In my mind she was about 40 as the prosecution kept going on about an innocent young man with an older woman. I'm enjoying it so far but the older drama (or was it a film?) was better in my opinion (so far anyway).

She looks much older than 28 in her photos, though I suppose people did tend to in that era due to their fashions and hair styles etc

Spot on about the fashions and hairstyles aging people back then. My Grandad was only 25 when he married in 1933. He looked 40!
Ruth was born in 1926, and David in 1929. Not that much older.
I’ve just watched 3/4 episodes tonight (saving last for tomorrow)
Lucy B is absolutely magnificent & mesmerising. Toby J as wonderful as ever.

I watched the first 15 minutes of the first, I'm afraid Carole Anne Lee has or whoever has put their spin on it. There is no way those two children were together at such a young age. Fact. And what's with the whynny voice.

That’s exactly how Ruth spoke. If you watch the Ruth Ellis Crime Files on BBC, there’s a tape recording of her voice. And you’re wrong, Georgina did spend a small part of her life with Ruth in the flat above the Little Club.

I'm sorry she didn't... Ruth did not speak with a screechie voice, that was put on for the 5 minute tape.

That was hardly a screechy voice in this drama…come on….really?!
What were you watching?

OP posts:

Obviously what you were watching and I can assure you Ruth did not speak like that. It was all put on. Surely you can see/ hear that .

OFGS. Yes I KNOW Ruth put on this accent. But she DID speak like that.
You clearly don’t know as much about RE as you claim to do. I won’t be engaging with you anymore. It’s tiresome.

OP posts:
Memeyouyou · 05/03/2025 22:10

Tiresome that's funny, you certainly didn't know RE, that's for me to know and you to find out. I am old enough and ugly enough to know the truth.

Are you Monica Weller?

OP posts:
Memeyouyou · 05/03/2025 22:22

No I am not. For your info Monica Weller did not know Ruth.

Memeyouyou · 05/03/2025 22:29

You knew her then? You must be over 90 years old, unless you were a child.
To reiterate: Ruth DID affect that ‘posh/received pronunciation’ voice…it was known as ‘the club accent’ at the time. All on tape.
Naturally, OF COURSE she didn’t speak like that originally. People went to elocution lessons to emote like that.
Having said that, it wasn’t ‘screechy’ or ‘whiny’ in the drama as @Memeyouyou states 🙄

I do know a lot, as I have studied this case for as long as I can remember.

Why should the person be over 90? We all know, even today there is a telephone voice. Did you know her?

Memeyouyou · 05/03/2025 22:34

Sorry it was.

sigh
no I never met her. The crime happened almost 70 years ago, before I was born.
anyone who met her who was an adult at the time, would have to be be 18 (born in 1937)
a child? Would be born in 1950 to remember her fully.
Why are you denying she spoke in a faux posh accent? It’s on tape!
I repeat, and I said, it’s not her original voice of course. Would’ve been v working class. Why aren’t you understanding that?!

Your loss. If you throw your toys out of the pram that easily, then I don't think I want to engage with you.
