A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis story.

I am really looking forward to this. This particular case (and miscarriage of justice IMO) has long since been a personal obsession of mine.
If Ruth had committed this crime in recent times, she wouldn’t even have had a custodial sentence (thankfully CP long abolished) - David Blakely was extremely mentally, verbally and physically abusive towards Ruth. He apparently caused her to miscarry just weeks before the incident. So it’s beyond question the balance of her mind was affected.
In the few post production photos I’ve seen, it looks gorgeous & I am sure Lucy Boynton will do Ruth justice. Perfect casting.
No date yet, but I was hoping it might be in the Easter TV schedules? Especially as Ruth shot David on Easter Sunday, so the the timing would be very apt:

Britbox tonight then it's from March 2nd.

Is that UK Britbox? I didn’t see it on there earlier, but I will double-check! It’s all part of ITVX now, isn’t it?

I don't know. Never heard of Britbox before.

RosaMoline · 18/02/2025 07:57

It’s definitely not on UK Britbox. However, Nigel Havers was just on GMB talking about it (in an inspired piece of casting, he’s playing his own grandfather, the trial judge) - he confirmed it’s definitely March for us (AFAIK the 2nd)
The early reviews from North America have been universally positive.
Quite a few articles in UK media about the drama/case - Ruth’s grandson, Stephen Beard, who was an actor on Hollyoaks, hopes that the dramatisation will spur renewed interest in justice for Ruth, much like Mr Bates V The Post Office (think I expressed an opinion touching on that up thread)
I’m so looking forward to this - it seems we’ve waited a long time!

Wednesday 5th March 9pm. For those that don't want to click the link. ITV.

Sir Cecil Havers apparently asked for a reprieve for Ruth, but was given short shrift. He then sent money every year for her son to be looked after. Clearly a better man than his son Michael, who declared of the Yorkshire Rippers victims:
'Some were prostitutes, but perhaps the saddest part of the case is that some were not. The last six attacks were on totally respectable women'......

Ellis's trial looks a bit like suicide by Pierrepoint from what I have seen of it.

back in the 80's I met a woman who had met Ellis, she was of the opinion that she was a lesbian.

Memeyouyou · 19/02/2025 21:18

You are wrong saying nothing compares, the actual truth is her sister's book as she was there. Also, everything you hear today are snippets from what has been said before.

I’ve spent a lifetime studying this case, and ‘the woman you met’ is wrong, or probably never met Ruth. Not to say she didn’t have dalliances with women (after all, she dabbled in sex work from time to time - may have been a punter’s request) but I would doubt very much she was a confirmed lesbian.

JohnofWessex let's get one thing straight you are not even on the same wavelength. There is a Black American called Ruth Ellis and yes she was a Lesbian. NOT This Ruth Ellis she was hetrosexual.

That’s 100% correct! I know exactly who you mean. Same name.

All I am reporting is what I was told and I am sure the woman who told me spoke to Ruth Ellis

As @Memeyouyou said, there was an Afro American woman called Ruth Ellis who WAS gay and campaigned for LGBT equality (I think) so this ‘woman you met’ was obviously talking about her. A different Ruth Ellis. So please don’t disrupt this thread with misinformation.

Georgina didn't know her birth mother and certainly didn't know her brother. Her life was a happy one and was no reflection on Ruth's life, on the other hand Andy's life was grim, his Aunty was always there for him and his cousins whom he worshipped.

FranticFrankie · 23/02/2025 12:03

Not sure Georgina’s life was totally happy; as she married a man also called David (Beard) who was abusive; she felt parts of her life mirrored her mother’s. Georgina’s book is a good read.
She died young too

Looking forward to the series- might save it and binge-watch

FranticFrankie · 23/02/2025 12:06

Oops I think I’ve repeated myself from an earlier post 🤦‍♀️

Memeyouyou · 23/02/2025 15:19

I can guarantee her life was a happy one she wanted for nothing, what happened during her many marriages was entirely down to her, we all have to be accountable for our own actions, just like Ruth. On the other hand Ruth's son had a devastating life as a result, now that is very, very sad.

tennissquare · 27/02/2025 19:26

Lucy Boynton is on the One show tonight talking about this show.

RosaMoline · 03/03/2025 14:21

Not long to wait now. 9pm Wednesday evening this week.
I’m hoping all the episodes will be on ITVX so I can binge watch.
The few reviews I’ve seen are fairly positive.

so looking forward to tonight - will probably watch 2 - then 2 remaining tomorrow night ♥️

I'm watching it now. I don't know anything about the case, but Ruth comes across as very unpleasant so I can't say I have much sympathy for her.
