A Cruel Love: The Ruth Ellis story.

I am really looking forward to this. This particular case (and miscarriage of justice IMO) has long since been a personal obsession of mine.
If Ruth had committed this crime in recent times, she wouldn’t even have had a custodial sentence (thankfully CP long abolished) - David Blakely was extremely mentally, verbally and physically abusive towards Ruth. He apparently caused her to miscarry just weeks before the incident. So it’s beyond question the balance of her mind was affected.
In the few post production photos I’ve seen, it looks gorgeous & I am sure Lucy Boynton will do Ruth justice. Perfect casting.
No date yet, but I was hoping it might be in the Easter TV schedules? Especially as Ruth shot David on Easter Sunday, so the the timing would be very apt:

Your loss. If you throw your toys out of the pram that easily, then I don't think I want to engage with you.

FINE BY ME.

Goodnight

Memeyouyou · 05/03/2025 22:59

Are you Monica Weller?

FeatherFace · 05/03/2025 23:03

Well this thread is certainly entertaining

@Memeyouyou don't be weird. You're coming across as a bit... unhinged.

I do know a lot, as I have studied this case for as long as I can remember.

Can I ask what it is about this case that fascinated you to study it for so long? Genuinely interested

Umbilicat · 05/03/2025 23:07

Yes, wasn’t expecting this!

Lucy B is fab. And though I am not an expert like others RE DID put on a posh accent, I’ve heard recordings

Memeyouyou · 05/03/2025 23:07

Am I, may be I am, I am a bit old, but I can assure you I do have all my faculties. To be quite honest I don't care who you are. I do know more than you though.

RosaMoline · 05/03/2025 23:08

To reiterate (which seems to have gone over @Memeyouyou‘s head:
I did not meet Ruth in person. The incident happened over 12 years after I was born. Anyone who has any living recollection of her would have to be at least 75.
My interest in the case is that I’ve studied it (and longed for justice for Ruth) for many years.
Ruth DID speak/affect that faux posh/BBC accent - it’s on tape - you can hear her voice in the Ruth Ellis Crime Files on iplayer. Is @Memeyouyou claiming that’s not her, then?
OF COURSE I know she didn’t always speak like that. Hence I clearly said she effected it to work in the clubs.
JFC…. 🙄

No. I wouldn’t have ghostwritten a book on a completely implausible conspiracy theory!

So you are saying I am stupid, typical copout. I am not knocking your interpretation of Ruth's voice, all I am saying that was not her normal voice . Like it or not.

Something just resonated with me. I would love to see justice for RE in my lifetime. I believe it’s a very tragic miscarriage of justice and very unfair. I feel the same about Edith Thompson (another sad case I’m very invested in)

RosaMoline · 05/03/2025 23:13

I also believe staunchly that if RE had been a posh, rich girl she’d have got off (see Elvira Barney)

Conspiracy theorist, your interpretation Carole. i suppose you doubt the abuse in the household as well.

YES I SAID THAT. But like it or not, she didn’t always speak like that, in her social circles, with Cussen, with Blakely, and in the club life.
With her family, probably not.
Is that clear enough for you?!?

I believe the abuse probably happened.
And it’s Carol Ann Lee NOT Carole,
Incidentally, I’m not her.

No not with Cussens, Davis yes and the Findlaters, but not in her home. You do not have to shout, I am bot deaf yet.

Memeyouyou · 05/03/2025 23:20

Well you must be her sidekick.

RosaMoline · 05/03/2025 23:20

Sorry, I meant to say the case happened 12 years BEFORE I was born, not after!

It's a shame that no one else can discuss this tv programme isn't it? Without this quite frankly bizarre exchange going on.

@Memeyouyou For some reason, you seem to have a personal axe to grind with C A Lee. I suggest you take it up with her personally, instead of going off one here.

OP posts:

You can, just go for it. Your interpretation would be interesting as well.

I’d love to discuss it, but that poster has been disrupting the thread.
I apologise for my frustration at them. Will now ignore. Let’s get back on topic.

Well, my interpretation is she was clearly guilty of murdering him but it's a tragedy that the extenuating circumstances were not taken into account - although that was very fitting for the time

These days she would still have been jailed I think but convicted of manslaughter due to the obvious extenuating circumstances

I do wonder if Ruth could’ve got off. She did come across as cold. She practically sabotaged her defence. She seemed intent on dying…but when reality hit, with just days to go, she changed her mind. Sadly, it was too late for a reprieve.
