This looks good. May be a few tears. May be some scenes some find hard

6 episodes - twice a week for 3w

Channel 4 has set the premiere date for its new deathly comic drama from the producers of The End of the F*ing World, entitled Truelove.

Iain Weatherby (Humans) and Charlie Covell (The End of the F*ing World) co-created the six-part series, which follows a recently reunited couple’s pursuit of dignified death.

The trailer accompanying the announcement introduces us to ex-senior police chief Phil (Lindsay Duncan, Sherlock) and divorced ex-special forces vet Ken (Clarke Peters, The Wire), who were once teenage sweethearts.

When they attend a friend’s funeral years later, the now retirees are reunited.
Phil and Ken join a gang of old friends at the wake, and with booze and nostalgia flowing, talk soon turns meditative.

After attempting to answer the question of what an ‘ideal’ death looks like, the gang make a drunken pact to ensure a dignified, not protracted, death. Helping each other in such a situation is, they toast, “true love.”

Among the line up are Sue Johnston (Help), Phil Davis (Silent Witness), Peter Egan (After Life), Karl Johnson (Too Close), Fiona Button (The Split) and Kiran Sonia Sawar (Black Mirror)
Upon first green-lighting the series, Caroline Hollick, Channel 4's Head of Drama, said: “Truelove is a unique, poignant and darkly funny series which deals with big themes around regrets at the paths not taken, quality of life and serious illness.

Got this recorded, and as everyone says, great cast. But the premise looks pretty awful to me. And, dare I say it, predictable?

There's only one way to find out! 😀

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/01/2024 22:55

Hello, can I please join? I recorded this while watching Traitors so just about 15 minutes in now. It looks right up my street.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/01/2024 06:36

All Welcome @Judystilldreamsofhorses

I've just finished e1 and I thought it was good

Thought provoking as well

How far would a bunch of old friends go

And great cast

OP posts:
Xmasbaby11 · 04/01/2024 23:12

I enjoyed E1 though it did get dark quite quickly and the ending was a shock. For me there wasn’t enough evidence of their friendships - they didn’t seem that close as a group, just that they were once. It was all a bit rushed towards the end and didn’t seem well thought out. It was very risky of them to have done it without proper planning.

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/01/2024 00:24

Agree @Xmasbaby11

I didn't expect it to be that quick /harsh

So he now dead and boat sinking

So do they plan him to be drowned at sea

They will see his lungs Havnt any water in them at post mortem if they find the boat /sunken boat

They kept saying true love but hadn't seen each other for decades then suddenly do this pact

And will the other 2 releise what they have done

They didn't turn up at the postcard meeting or did he only send 2

Now they will have their guilt to live with esp the black bloke who did the bag

Haven't seen tonight's yet

Prob watch Tom

OP posts:
StrawberryJellyBelly · 05/01/2024 06:20

It’s very slow. But so highly unlikely that it just doesn’t make me want to watch anymore of it.

Jennalong · 05/01/2024 06:25

Thanks for the heads up , recording it and will watch an episode tonight.

BIWI · 05/01/2024 09:37

I'm guessing that they're trying to paint Phil as the arrogant ex-cop, who truly believes that they won't get caught.

However, so much of the way Tom was dispatched would surely not have been allowed to to happen by someone very familiar with police procedure and forensics? The idea that they could just abandon the motor boat is nonsensical.

The plot point re the mobile was also very weak - you surely wouldn't leave a secret mobile, that had to be on at all times, just lying around, would you?

We'll keep watching, I think, but only because the next 'story' is going to be interesting (and it's a very good cast).

duc748 · 05/01/2024 11:13

I watched the first one, and like I said upthread, good as the cast is, the premise seems far-fetched and contrived. Don't think I'll persist with it [

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 05/01/2024 18:19

I’ve watched the two that have gone out and have really enjoyed them. I think it raises a very interesting question in terms of getting older, and while it’s obviously far fetched I’m engaged with it.

Is it all there to stream, does anyone know, or dropping week by week?

Xmasbaby11 · 05/01/2024 22:54

I think all episodes are there. I’m going to stick with it even though I agree with all the criticisms.

I like the back story about the parents downsizing to fund their daughter post divorce and Phil is reluctant- does make you think about entitlement and that older people can be written off.

purpleme12 · 06/01/2024 02:14

Watched it til he started suffocating him. Disgusting
